TL;DR: It is reported that newly formed 30S ribosomes can enter polyribosomes while they still contain precursor RNA, a step in the ribosome maturation process.
Abstract: BIOGENESIS of bacterial ribosomes proceeds through the formation of precursor particles1–4, consisting of an incomplete set of ribosomal protein5 and of RNA molecules that are longer and less methylated than mature RNA4,6,7. RNA maturation is commonly considered to be a part of the ribosome maturation process. Here we report that newly formed 30S ribosomes can enter polyribosomes while they still contain precursor RNA. Maturation of ribosomal RNA might be completed not before, but after, ribosomes have interacted with messenger RNA.

TL;DR: The chick ciliary ganglion receives a nonvascular symathetic innervation in addition to the well-known cholinergic one; fluorescent, varicose adrenergic fibers form pericelluar baskets, suggesting a kind of "distance synapse" with the choroidal cells or with the preganglionic fibers (or both).
Abstract: The chick ciliary ganglion receives a nonvascular symathetic innervation in addition to the well-known cholinergic one; fluorescent, varicose adrenergic fibers form pericelluar baskets. Adrenergic fibes were identified electron microscopically in ganglia fixed with potassium permanganate. The fibers degenerate after injection of 6-hydroxydopamine. No true synaptic relationships involving adrenergic varicosities and ganglion cells or cholinergic terminals were demonstrable. The distribution of the adrenergic fibers suggests a kind of "distance a synapse" with the choroidal cells or with the preganglionic fibers (or both). The adrenergic innervation might provide a modulation of the cholinergic transmission.

TL;DR: Some cases of solvability of the convertibility equation MX=N, where M,N and X are normal forms of the λ-K-β-calculus are considered and their relationship to pattern-matching problems is discussed.
Abstract: Some cases of solvability of the convertibility equation MX=N, where M,N and X are normal forms of the λ-K-β-calculus are considered and their relationship to pattern-matching problems is discussed. In particular, the solvability of such an equation is decided in the cases: i) N ≡ I and M = BF ii) N ≡ I and M = CBF where F is a normal form iii) N is an arbitrary normal form.

TL;DR: The proposed technique has proved useful for the staining of keratinized areas in the skin and rat pre-stomach and of insulin-containing B cells of the pancreatic islets.
Abstract: A method is presented for the histochemical demonstration of protein-bound disulphide and sulphydryl groups, through thiosulphation. This is obtained by treatment of fixed sections with Na sulphite in presence of cupric ions and in alcaline conditions. Since the induced thiosulphate groups share the histochemical reactions of sulphate groups, they can be revealed by Alcian Blue, Toluidine Blue, and DAB-OsO4 staining methods.

TL;DR: It was concluded that in assessing the role of histopathology in the prognosis of lung cancer, the mutual relationship to other pathological factors must be taken into account.
Abstract: The post-operative survival in 554 lung carcinomata, classified according to the histological type, was calculated by the actuarial method. On the whole, squamous cell carcinoma was the most favourable and anaplastic small cell carcinoma the least favourable lesion. However, in tumours smaller than 4 cm, confined to the lung and with negative lymph nodes (stage I), small cell carcinoma had the highest percentage of 5 year survivors, followed by large cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. When tumours had attained a larger size and/or spread to neighbouring structures and regional lymph nodes (stage II and III), the histological type was a much more determining factor in survival, squamous cell carcinoma being a significantly more favourable lesion. On the other hand, no difference in survival in relation to the histological type was found when distant metastases were probably present (stage IV). It was concluded that in assessing the role of histopathology in the prognosis of lung cancer, the mutual relationship to other pathological factors must be taken into account.

TL;DR: In this paper, an unusual event observed during the search for electron antineutrino Ve bursts of extraterrestrial origin was reported in the Homestake Gold Mine in South Dakota.
Abstract: WE report an unusual event observed during our search for electron antineutrino Ve bursts of extraterrestrial origin1. Our experiment uses a deep underground Ve burst-detector station, adjacent to the Brookhaven Solar Neutrino Observatory2 at a depth of 4,400 metres water equivalent (m.w.e.) in the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. At this station we have placed a number of large water Cerenkov counters (Fig. 1) designed to detect Ve interactions by the Cerenkov radiation from positrons resulting from Ve + p →n + e+ (ref. 3).

TL;DR: The significance of liquor-contacting cells and tanycytes is discussed, in view of the possibility that they may represent part of a system for hypothalamic regulation in response to changes in the CSF.
Abstract: Golgi methods were employed to study neurons and ependymal tanycytes in the posterior hypothalamus of the newt. The tanycytes send a few coarse, spiny or barbed processes towards the pia mater. In the periventricular grey, the neurohistological methods show common neurons, ranging from a multipolar to a plumed organization, and abundant liquor-contacting cells. These cells, possibly neurons, give rise to a process that reaches the cerebro-spinal fluid, and terminates in a spindle-shaped swelling, with a thin thread at its tip. In other cells, the intraventricular endings are bulbous or finger-like. The occurrence of: (1) branches of the liquor-contacting process, running parallel to the infundibular surface; (2) infundibular processes which end at the base or between the ependymal cell bodies; and (3) axons coursing in the same position, all indicates that the subependymal layer is a site for complex intercellular relationships. The significance of liquor-contacting cells and tanycytes is discussed, in view of the possibility that they may represent part of a system for hypothalamic regulation in response to changes in the CSF.

TL;DR: Several anti‐HL‐A antisera, correlated with either HL‐A12 or W15, were studied and enable the identification of new locus FOUR allelic products, strictly correlated with W4 and W6.
Abstract: SUMMARY Several anti-HL-A antisera, correlated with either HL-A12 or W15, were studied. Immunogenetic analysis was carried out by population and family studies, adsorptions, elutions and resistance to lysis induction capacity. Antibodies present in the sera allow the distinction to be made between two alternative factors subtypic to HL-A12,‘TO 50’and‘TO 51′, and two alternative factors subtypic to W15,‘TO 52’and‘TO 53′. These subdivisions are genetically determined. Lysostrip experiments demonstrated them to be on the same molecule carrying either HL-A 12 or W15. Thus, they enable the identification of new locus FOUR allelic products. These new HL-A factors are strictly correlated with W4 and W6: haplotypic association has regularly been found between TO 50 and W4, TO 51 and W6, TO 52 and W4, TO 53 and W6. This subdivision of HL-A allelic products into specificities subtypic either to W4 or to W6 is a characteristic common to most, if not all, FOUR factors. Finally, the commonly observed cross-reaction between W15 and W17 preferably takes place with TO 52. It should be noted that both TO 52 and W17 are subtypic to W4.

TL;DR: In this article, a volunteer was immunized by planned blood transfusions from an LA and FOUR incompatible donor, and among the several antibodies produced, an antibody population was found that cross-reacts with both LA and FF antigens; both these crossreacting determinants were present in the immunizing donor.
Abstract: A volunteer was immunized by planned blood transfusions from an LA and FOUR incompatible donor. Among the several antibodies produced, an antibody population was found that cross-reacts with both LA and FOUR antigens; both these crossreacting determinants were present in the immunizing donor. Monospecificity of the antibody has been proven by adsorptions and elutions. Resistance to lysis experiments excluded the possibility that this antibody does not react against LA and FOUR, but reacts instead against an antigen belonging to another independentHL-A locus with alleles in strong linkage disequilibrium withLA andFOUR alleles. The following hypotheses are therefore formulated: a)LA andFOUR factors have structural analogies; b) LA and FOUR molecules lie in close proximity on the cell surface so that the appearance of a “hybrid” antigenic determinant becomes possible.

TL;DR: The results indicate that DPPD can act as an inhibitor of the enzymes bound to the endoplasmic reticulum, beside its antioxidant properties, during CCl4 intoxication.
Abstract: A preliminary treatment with DPPD (N,N'-diphenyl-p-phenylendiamine) prevents liver fatty infiltration early after carbon tetrachloride poisoning. Double bond shifting in microsomal lipids appears to be depressed 30 minutes after intoxication. A more active protection takes place when low doses of CCl4 are given (25 μl per 100 g body weight) than after a large dose of the poison (250 μl). In later stages of the halogenoalkane challenge, both triglyceride accumulation and lipid peroxidation take place despite of the antioxidant treatment. However, they are less severe and more transient than in unprotected animals. Similarly, liver necrosis, as evidenced by changes in serum activity of alanine aminotransferase appears, to be prevented by DPPD. This compound does not interfere with the hepatic metabolism of carbon tetrachloride, as suggested by the findings of14C binding to liver lipids and exhalation of radioactive CO2 after administration of14CCl4. Moreover, pretreatment with antioxidant partially inhibits the in vitro demethylation of aminopyrine by liver microsomes and significantly potentiates the hypnotic effect of hexobarbital. Further, DPPD, when injected along with phenobarbital, blocks the barbiturate stimulation of microsomal enzymes. A combined dosing with both DPPD and CCl4 causes a more severe inhibition of demethylase activity and hexobarbital metabolism. Our results indicate that DPPD can act as an inhibitor of the enzymes bound to the endoplasmic reticulum, beside its antioxidant properties, during CCl4 intoxication.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Barkhausen noise power spectrum was investigated on laminated polycrystalline toroids of Fe and 4% SiFe as a function of sample thickness; that is, of surface-to-volume ratio.
Abstract: The Barkhausen noise power spectrum was investigated on laminated polycrystalline toroids of Fe and 4% SiFe as a function of sample thickness; that is, of surface-to-volume ratio. Upon decreasing the thickness strong variations of spectrum shape are observed-the cut-off frequency increases and the spectral density drops in the very-low-frequency range. On the other hand, only negligible variations of static magnetic properties are observed. According to a recent theory, the results are explained assuming that a change of thickness directly affects the number of elementary pulses clustering into a large Barkhausen discontinuity. The calculated variations of the spectrum intensity and cut-off frequency are in good agreement with the experimental results.

TL;DR: Rabbit antisera raised against antigens solubilized from the membranes of a transplantable Balb/c adenocarcinoma precipitated an antigen that was not expressed by the normal resting mammary gland or any other normal mouse tissue, and was transiently expressed by mammaries during the hyperplasia that both precedes and accompanies lactation.
Abstract: Rabbit antisera raised against antigens solubilized from the membranes of a transplantable Balb/c adenocarcinoma precipitated an antigen that was not expressed by the normal resting mammary gland or any other normal mouse tissue. The same antisera were used to show the presence of this antigen in other mammary adenocarcinomas, although not in tumours of different histological types. The antigen was, however, transiently expressed by mammary gland cells during the hyperplasia that both precedes and accompanies lactation. A connection is sought between the existence of this antigen and the membrane structural changes that take place during mitosis.
