TL;DR: A new type assignment for λ-terms is proposed whose motivation is to introduce a system with simple inferential rules to study termination (i.e. the property of having a normal form) of λ -terms.
Abstract: In the present paper we propose a new type assignment for λ-terms whose motivation is to introduce a system with simple inferential rules to study termination (i.e. the property of having a normal form) of λ-terms. The main results that will be proved in this paper are: a) all λ-terms in normal form possess a type, b) all λ-terms which possess a type reduce to normal form.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors construct generalizations of gravity, including supergravity, by writing the theory on the group manifold (Poincare for gravity, the graded Poincare group for supergravity).
Abstract: We construct generalizations of gravity, including supergravity, by writing the theory on the group manifold (Poincare for gravity, the graded-Poincare group for supergravity). The action involves forms over the group, restricted to a 4-dimensional submanifold. The equations of motion produce a Lorentz gauge in gravity and supergravity, and an additional anholonomic supersymmetric coordinate transformation which reduces to the “local supersymmetry” of supergravity.

TL;DR: It is concluded that TMC, although mainly made up of C cells, usually contains large proportions of other endocrine cell types.
Abstract: 10 cases of thyroid medullary carcinoma (TMC) have been studied ultrastructurally and histochemically. Well differentiated calcitonin-producing C cells were present in all tumours, being prevalent in 9 cases. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5HT) storing cells were found in two cases, somatostatin immunoreactive cells in at least 5 cases and ACTH-immunoreactive cells in 4 cases. Ultrastructurally, at least 3 types of apparently non-C cells were observed. Type 1 cells with large, poorly osmiophilic granules resembling those of gastroenteropancreatic D cells, were present in 6 cases; they appeared to correlate well with somatostatin immunoreactive cells. Type 2 cells with large osmiophilic granules were found in 5 cases; they resembled ACTH-MSH cells of the human pituitary and may correspond to the ACTH-immunoreactive cells of light microscopy. Type 3 cells with small granules and an unknown function were found in 6 cases, always in scarce number. It is concluded that TMC, although mainly made up of C cells, usually contains large proportions of other endocrine cell types.

TL;DR: In this article, a solution for the embedding problem in chemisorption is proposed, particularly designed for easy implementation into molecular-orbital linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals self-consistent field calculation schemes.
Abstract: A solution for the embedding problem in chemisorption is proposed, particularly designed for easy implementation into molecular-orbital linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals self-consistent-field calculation schemes. It is essentially based on the assumption that the perturbation in the electronic states induced by the adspecies is effectively screened within a certain $B$ region of the adsorbing solid and that this $B$ region is also large enough to allow for neglect of direct-coupling terms between the adspecies and the defective solid. An energy-dependent coupling matrix $M(e)$ is defined, which may be calculated on the basis of the free-solid solution and that can be used to correct the local solutions so as to properly connect them to the free-solid ones. The theory is tested in the case of hydrogen adsorption on graphite in the complete neglect of differential overlap approximation. Moderately large embedded clusters appear to be adequate for a correct description of the chemisorption process.

TL;DR: Experimental cerebral tumors have been induced by transplacental ENU and neurinomas appear later than glial tumors and the usefulness of the model for chemotherapy studies is discussed.
Abstract: Experimental cerebral tumors have been induced by transplacental ENU. A systematic diachronic study of the brains has been performed starting from the 15th day of extrauterine life. The tumoral lesions firstly appear as “early stage proliferations” or oligodendroglial foci and develop as glial micro-and macrotumors or as isomorphic and polymorphic oligodendrogliomas respectively.

TL;DR: It is concluded that lipid peroxidation is unlikely to be an important mechanism in alcohol hepatotoxicity and anti-oxidant compounds which are active in preventing liver injury are discussed.
Abstract: Hepatic lipid peroxidation in vivo or in vitro as measured by UV absorption spectra of microsomal lipids or by production of TBA-reacting substances by whole liver homogenates, was studied after acute or during prolonged administration of ethanol. No evidence of peroxidative derangement of liver microsomal lipids in vivo was detected in either experimental situation, while the production of TBA-reacting substances by pooled liver homogenates incubated in vitro appeared slightly increased. Treatment with reduced glutathione (GSH and 2-mercaptopropionylglycine (2-MPG) was able to reduce fatty liver in acute and prolonged ethanol dosing, as well as the production of TBA-reacting compounds. Similar effects were obtained with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole which was assayed only in acute experiments. By contrast, hepatic triglyceride accumulation induced by a single intoxicating dose of ethanol was not affected by preventive treatment with pyrazole which seemed to act as a pro-oxidant agent as far as the production of TBA-reacting substances is concerned. The role of lipid peroxidation as a pathogenic mechanism for acute and chronic ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity is discussed in relation to the action of anti-oxidant compounds which are active in preventing liver injury. It is concluded that lipid peroxidation is unlikely to be an important mechanism in alcohol hepatotoxicity.

TL;DR: HA possessed a powerful stimulating effect on hypothalamic adenylate cyclase activity, higher than that shown by the other substances.
Abstract: — In in vitro experiments on rat hypothalamic homogenates the effects of biogenic amines such as histamine (HA), noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT) and drugs such as isoprenaline (ISP), 2-(2-pyridyl)ethylamine (H2 stimulant—Hls), 4-methyl-histamine (H2 stimulant H2s), mepyramine (H1 antagonistp Hla), cimetidine (H2 antagonist—H2a) were tested on adenylate cyclase activity. HA possessed a powerful stimulating effect on hypothalamic adenylate cyclase activity, higher than that shown by the other substances. The stimulating effect of HA was greatest in hypothalamic tissue from male rats, while tissue from females showed only a modest stimulation. H2s, induced a greater stimulation of adenylate cyclase than Hls. On the other hand, the H2a inhibited HA stimulation to a greater extent than the Hla, Hla and H2a, when used together, completely inhibited the HA stimulation. HA may have a neurotrans-mitter role in the hypothalamus, and in this area there appears to be a mixed population of H1 and H2 receptors, with a majority of H2 receptors.

TL;DR: DRw2 can be “split” into two subtypic specificities that have been named TO60 and TO61, which appear more strongly correlated with HLA-D antigens.
Abstract: Two B-lymphocyte-specific human alloantisera were studied, PA59 and 51.23. They identify two new HLA-DR alleles, which are both subtypic to HLA-DRw2. Moreover, they are closely correlated with two HLA-D products, Dw2 and tb24 (tb24 is a new specificity described by our group). Thus, DRw2 can be “split” into two subtypic specificities that have been named TO60 and TO61, which appear more strongly correlated with HLA-D antigens. Absorption studies demonstrated cytotoxicity-negative, absorption-positive (CYNAP) reactions, and cross-reactive groups of antibodies.

TL;DR: The results suggest that TSH release is controlled by a dopaminergic mechanism in man, and the more accentuated TSH response in hypothyroid patients may perhaps be attributable to the absence of negative‐feedback on the part of thyroid hormones.
Abstract: SUMMARY 100 mg i.m. sulpiride (a dopamine-receptor-blocking drug) led to a significant rise in plasma TSH in normal women, in female patients with galactorrhoea, and, to a much more marked degree, in male and female patients with primary hypothyroidism. In the hypothyroid patients, there was a significant positive correlation between basal TSH and its maximum increment after sulpiride. The drug proved to be an even more potent stimulator of PRL, at least in subjects with normal blood PRL. Normal males, on the other hand, displayed no significant changes in TSH after sulpiride. Continuous administration (150 mg/day per os for 15 days) also resulted in enhancement of TSH in normal women. These results suggest that TSH release is controlled by a dopaminergic mechanism in man. The more accentuated TSH response in hypothyroid patients may perhaps be attributable to the absence of negative-feedback on the part of thyroid hormones.

Abstract: A newborn girl with multiple anomalies had an interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 7 (46,XX,der(7)mat). The patient's mother and maternal grandmother were carriers of a balanced translocation, 46,XX, inv ins(5;7)(q14;q3200q2200). Both cytogenetic and clinical findings were similar to those in the two cases already described.

Abstract: Cells of clone NB41A3 of the C-1300 mouse neuroblastoma were grown to a critical density at which many of the cells flatten, assume a variety of shapes and sizes and some sprout processes resembling neurites. We have studied the distribution of actin and tubulin in these cells using fluorescence microscopy and antibodies against actin or tubulin under these conditions. Actin-containing structures are variably arranged and predominantly associated with motile areas of the cell periphery including the growth cone. Microtubules appear to run radially from the perinuclear area towards the cell periphery. When neurites are present, microtubules converge into them and run to the growth cone but rarely contact its edge.

TL;DR: Results indicate that a dopaminergic stimulation led to an inhibition of TSH and PRL secretion, and its site of action should be outside this barrier, probably in the pituitary.
Abstract: The effect of dopamine on thyrotropin (TSH) and prolactin (PRL) levels was studied in 5 normal subjects, 7 women with galactorrhea, 9 acromegalics and 4 patients with primary hypothyroidism. Dopamine infused at the rate of 280 micrograms/min produced significant decrease in plasma TSH and PRL levels in all four groups, though a lower fall in TSH was noted in acromegalics. A similar reduction in PRL was also noted after 28 micrograms/min dopamine. Phentolamine infusion (0.5 mg/min) had no effect on PRL response to dopamine. These results indicate that a dopaminergic stimulation led to an inhibition of TSH and PRL secretion. Since the high polarity of dopamine impedes its passage through the blood-brain barrier, its site of action should be outside this barrier, probably in the pituitary.

Abstract: The preoptic area of a primitive actinopterygian, the polypteriform, Calamoichthys calabaricus Smithi, and of the teleost, Anguilla anguilla L, have been studied by Golgi and other neurohistological and histochemical methods In the preoptic area two regions can be recognized: a cell rich median region and a lateral one, composed mostly of fiber systems After Golgi staining a varied population of neurons is seen, including: (1) magnocellular neurons, endowed with a number of dendrites and an axon emerging from the main dendritic shaft; (2) lophodendritic tufted or pyriform neurons of variable morphology (often of the midget type); (3) cerebrospinal fluid contacting neurons; (4) bipolar and horizontal neurons Of relevant interest is also the observation of commissural neurons, of a distinct precommissural nucleus, and of bipolar neurons, the axons of which course toward the ventral hypopallium

TL;DR: The Sherpas are of medium stature and body build, with Mongoloid cranial and facial characteristics and very little body fat, which may be a racial adaptation to the high altitude at which they live and to the load-carrying, which is a feature of their life.
Abstract: SummaryOn 109 male Sherpas, aged 18–85 years, 24 anthropometric measurements were performed, including weight, height, 18 bony measurements, 2 limb circumferences, and 4 skinfolds. From these data, upper and lower limb lengths, 12 indices, and total body fat were calculated. The Sherpas are of medium stature and body build, with Mongoloid cranial and facial characteristics and very little body fat. Their relatively large chests, long legs, and large calf muscles may be a racial adaptation to the high altitude at which they live and to the load-carrying, which is a feature of their life.
