TL;DR: In this paper, the implications of radical uncertainty for participatory democracy, and more precisely for Participatory Technology Assessment (PTA), are explored from the viewpoint of new science, deliberative democracy and network governance.
Abstract: The article deals with some implications of radical uncertainty for participatory democracy, and more precisely for Participatory Technology Assessment (PTA) Two main forms of PTA are discussed One is aimed at involving lay citizens and highlighting public opinion The other is addressed to stakeholder groups and organisations, not only in terms of interest mediation but also of inclusion of their insight into a problem Radical uncertainty makes 'intractable' many environmental and technological issues and brings into question traditional and new approaches to policy-making Its consequences are explored from the viewpoint of new science, deliberative democracy, and network governance Radical uncertainty calls for a rethinking of the aims of public deliberation, and a reinterpretation of the divide between opinion- and position-oriented PTA To look for a public opinion, understood as a shared principled view, can prove misleading, as can thinking of stakeholder participatory arrangements in the usual way When facts and values overlap, and are deeply controversial, the only opportunity for mutual understanding may be to look for practical, 'local' answers, based on different positional insights Moreover, radical uncertainty also affects interest determination and pursuit, and may enhance the opportunity of joint, inclusive, non-strategic issue definition and solution-devising This vision of public deliberation is consistent with the idea of network governance However, fragmentation can affect the effectiveness and legitimacy of participatory policies Trying to handle fragmentation from the top, as many suggest, is unlikely to be successful A more promising endeavour is to foster deliberative settings which, although positioned at the level of 'local' and often contingent networks and commonalities, are open to include 'Otherness' - other contexts, other problem definitions, other concerns

TL;DR: Colour variation of the grape berry conforms to a peculiar pattern of genotype-specific expression of the whole set of anthocyanin genes in a direct transcript-metabolite-phenotype relationship.
Abstract: Background
Fruit coloration of red-skinned grapevines is mainly due to anthocyanin pigments. We analysed a panel of nine cultivars that included extreme phenotypes for berry colour, ranging from green (absence of anthocyanins) to red, purple, violet and blue. Expression of six genes of the anthocyanin pathway coding for flavanone-hydroxylase (F3H), flavonoid 3'-hydroxylase (F3'H), flavonoid 3',5'-hydroxylase (F3'5'H), UDP-glucose:flavonoid-3-O-glucosyltransferase (UFGT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), O-methyltransferase (OMT) and four transcription factors (MybA, MybB, MybC, MybD) was analysed by quantitative RT-PCR at four developmental stages from before the onset of ripening until full maturity and compared to anthocyanin metabolites.

TL;DR: The Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has measured the diffuse gamma-ray emission with improved sensitivity and resolution compared to EGRET, and the LAT spectrum for this region of the sky is well reproduced by a diffuse galactic gamma-rays emission model that is consistent with local CR spectra and inconsistent with the EGRET GeV excess.
Abstract: The diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission is produced by cosmic rays (CRs) interacting with the interstellar gas and radiation field. Measurements by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory indicated excess gamma-ray emission > 1 GeV relative to diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission models consistent with directly measured CR spectra (the so-called ``EGRET GeV excess''). The excess emission was observed in all directions on the sky, and a variety of explanations have been proposed, including beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios like annihilating or decaying dark matter. The Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has measured the diffuse gamma-ray emission with improved sensitivity and resolution compared to EGRET. We report on LAT measurements of the diffuse gamma-ray emission for energies 100 MeV to 10 GeV and Galactic latitudes 10 deg. <= |b| <= 20 deg. The LAT spectrum for this region of the sky is well reproduced by a diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission model that is consistent with local CR spectra and inconsistent with the EGRET GeV excess.

TL;DR: PTX3 may play a role in inflammatory circuits of RA, and its relevance as a marker of disease activity deserves further study.
Abstract: PTX3 is a secreted molecule which consists of a C-terminal domain similar to classical pentraxins (e.g. C-reactive protein (CRP)) and of an unrelated N-terminal domain. Unlike the classical pentraxins, the long pentraxin PTX3 is expressed in response to IL-1β and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), but not to IL-6, in various cell types. The present study was designed to investigate the expression of PTX3 in RA. Dissociated RA and osteoarthritis (OA) type B synoviocytes were cultured in the presence and in the absence of inflammatory cytokines. PTX3 mRNA expression in synoviocytes was evaluated by Northern analysis. PTX3 protein levels in synovial cell cultures and synovial fluid were estimated by ELISA, and PTX3 distribution in synovial tissues by immunohistochemical techniques. OA synoviocytes were induced to express high levels of PTX3 mRNA by TNF-α, but not by other cytokines including IL-1β and IL-6. RA synoviocytes, unlike OA synoviocytes, constitutively expressed high levels of PTX3 in the absence of deliberate stimulation. The constitutive expression of PTX3 in RA synoviocytes was not modified by anti-TNF-α antibodies, IL-1 receptor antagonist or a combination of the two agents. In contrast, interferon-gamma and transforming growth factor-beta inhibited PTX3 constitutive expression in RA synoviocytes. The joint fluid from RA patients contained higher levels of immunoreactive PTX3 than controls and the synovial tissue contained endothelial cells and synoviocytes positive for PTX3 by immunohistochemistry. In conclusion, PTX3 may play a role in inflammatory circuits of RA, and its relevance as a marker of disease activity deserves further study.
