TL;DR: In this paper, direct numerical simulation (DNS) and Lagrangian tracking is used to study turbulent transfer and deposition of inertial particles in vertical upward circular pipe flow, and the connection between particle transfer mechanisms and turbulence structure in the boundary layer is examined.

TL;DR: In this paper, the synthesis of nanometer-sized α-Al2O3−M composites (nanocomposites) is described for M = Fe, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Nb, Mo, W, Si, and Fe alloys.
Abstract: The synthesis of nanometer-sized α-Al2O3−M composites (nanocomposites) is described for M = Fe, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Nb, Mo, W, Si, and Fe alloys. The synthesis is performed by solid-state reduction reaction which occurs during room-temperature ball-milling of mixtures of a metal oxide (MxOy) and aluminum (Al2y/3). A complete reduction is reached for milling times of ≅ 1.5 h in a planetary mill. The crystallite sizes of alumina and metal obatined, for powders processed in a vibratory mill, are in general about 10 nm.

TL;DR: The general problem of trajectory planning in Robotics is addressed, with an overview of the most significant methods, that have been proposed in the robotic literature to generate collision-free paths.
Abstract: Trajectory planning is a fundamental issue for robotic applications and automation in general. The ability to generate trajectories with given features is a key point to ensure significant results in terms of quality and ease of performing the required motion, especially at the high operating speeds necessary in many applications. The general problem of trajectory planning in Robotics is addressed in the paper, with an overview of the most significant methods, that have been proposed in the robotic literature to generate collision-free paths. The problem of finding an optimal trajectory for a given path is then discussed and some significant solutions are described.

TL;DR: The results suggest that besides the genetic factor, environmental conditions influence the volatile formation of virgin olive oils from industrially produced virgin olive oil samples.
Abstract: SPME was employed to characterize the volatile profile of virgin olive oils produced in two geographical areas of northern Italy: the region of the Gulf of Trieste and the area near Lake Garda. There are as yet no data on the headspace composition of virgin olive oils from these regions, characterized by particular conditions of growth for Olea europaea. Using the SPME technique coupled to GC-MS and GC-FID, the volatile components of 42 industrially produced virgin olive oil samples were identified and the principal compounds quantitatively analyzed. Significant differences in the proportion of volatile constituents from oils of different varieties and geographical origins were detected. The results suggest that besides the genetic factor, environmental conditions influence the volatile formation. Keywords: Virgin olive oil; volatiles; solid-phase microextraction; SPME, characterization; aroma

TL;DR: This survey is designed for mathematical programming people who do not know molecular biology and want to learn the kinds of combinatorial optimization problems that arise, and offers a guide to getting started in this exciting frontier.
Abstract: This is a survey designed for mathematical programming people who do not know molecular biology and want to learn the kinds of combinatorial optimization problems that arise. After a brief introduction to the biology, we present optimization models pertaining to sequencing, evolutionary explanations, structure prediction, and recognition. Additional biology is given in the context of the problems, including some motivation for disease diagnosis and drug discovery. Open problems are cited with an extensive bibliography, and we offer a guide to getting started in this exciting frontier.
