Abstract: An inclusive search for a new-physics signature of lepton-jet resonances has been performed by the ATLAS experiment. Scalar leptoquarks, pair-produced in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV at the large hadron collider, have been considered. An integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb−1, corresponding to the full 2015 dataset was used. First (second) generation leptoquarks were sought in events with two electrons (muons) and two or more jets. The observed event yield in each channel is consistent with Standard Model background expectations. The observed (expected) lower limits on the leptoquark mass at 95% confidence level are 1100 and 1050 GeV (1160 and 1040 GeV) for first and second generation leptoquarks, respectively, assuming a branching ratio into a charged lepton and a quark of 100%. Upper limits on the aforementioned branching ratio are also given as a function of leptoquark mass. Compared with the results of earlier ATLAS searches, the sensitivity is increased for leptoquark masses above 860 GeV, and the observed exclusion limits confirm and extend the published results.

Abstract: The effect of a water extractable humic substances fraction (WEHS) on nitrate uptake and plasma membrane (pm) H+-ATPase activity of maize roots was investigated. Four days old maize root seedlings were exposed for 4 to 24 h to a nutrient solution containing 200 μ M nitrate in the absence or presence of 5 mg org. C { L
-1 WEHS. Plants exposed to nitrate developed a higher capacity to absorb the anion (induction): the net uptake rate progressively increased up to 12 h of contact with the solution; thereafter, a decline was observed. When WEHS was present together with nitrate in the nutrient solution, the induction of nitrate uptake was evident and maximal already 4 h after starting the treatment. The rate of net nitrate uptake decreased only slightly during the remaining period (4-24 h). Stimulation of net nitrate uptake rate was also observed when WEHS was added to a nitrogen- or nitrate-free nutrient solution or to a 5 mM CaSO4 solution. The activity of pmH+-ATPase raised upon exposure of the roots to nitrate with the same pattern observed for nitrate uptake. The contemporary presence of nitrate and WEHS caused a further stimulation of the pmH+-ATPase activity after 4 h treatment. An increase in the enzyme activity was also observed when plants were treated for 4 h in the presence of WEHS in CaSO4, nitrogen- or nitrate-free solutions. However, when nitrate was present the enhancement was even greater. Results support the idea that the plasma membrane proton pump might be one of the primary targets of the action of humic substances on plant nutrient acquisition. A role of WEHS in the modulation of nitrate uptake via an interaction with the pm H+-ATPase is also discussed.

Abstract: In this paper, we present a comprehensive experimental characterization of electron and hole effective mobility (/spl mu//sub eff/) of ultrathin SOI n- and p-MOSFETs. Measurements have been performed at different temperatures using a special test structure able to circumvent parasitic resistance effects. Our results indicate that, at large inversion densities (N/sub inv/), the mobility of ultrathin SOI transistors is largely insensitive to silicon thickness (T/sub SI/) and is larger than in heavily doped bulk MOS because of a lower effective field. At small N/sub inv/, instead, mobility of SOI transistors exhibits a systematic reduction with decreasing T/sub SI/. The possible explanation for this /spl mu//sub eff/ degradation in extremely thin silicon layers is discussed by means of a comparison to previously published experimental data and theoretical calculations. Our analysis suggests a significant role is played by an enhancement of phonon scattering due to carrier confinement in the thinnest semiconductor films. The experimental mobility data have then been used to study the possible implications for ultrashort SOI transistor performance using numerical simulations.

Abstract: This paper examines the role of supplier development in establishing and managing efficient buyer–supplier operational links. The paper develops and assesses a measurement instrument for “operational” and “supplier development” just-in-time purchasing practices, followed by an examination of the relationships between the two sets, and an investigation into whether the use of “operational” and “supplier development” practices has a bearing on higher plant performance. A plant-level survey was carried out on a sample of electronics and machinery plants. The study empirically: • documents the close connection between the buyer–supplier operational link and the buyer’s practices for supplier development; • demonstrates that recourse to supplier development programs and their nature depend on the kind of vendor–vendee operational connection; • test whether different plant performance outcomes result from the implementing of different “operational” and “supplier development” practices. It demonstrates that better-performing plants exhibit more advanced design and logistic links with sources, more formalised vendor-rating and ranking procedures, greater use of organisational devices for supplier-organisational integration and place greater importance on supplier assistance and training.
