Abstract: TTF-1 and PAX-8 are tissue-specific transcription factors expressed in the thyroid follicular cells, contributing to the maintenance of the differentiated phenotype. In fact, it has been demonstrated that TTF-1 and PAX-8 are able to activate transcription from thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase (TPO) promoters, the transcriptional activity of which is in vivo restricted only to the thyroid follicular cell. In order to gain insight into how these transcription factors control in vivo the differentiation of the thyroid cell and to have a better molecular characterization of human thyroid tumors, TTF-1, PAX-8, thyroglobulin, and TPO mRNA levels were measured in nonmalignant and malignant human thyroid tissues. Results indicate that the expression of TTF-1 and PAX-8 is not sufficient per se for the expression of the thyroid-differentiated phenotype. Furthermore, in follicular adenomas, PAX-8 mRNA levels are strictly related to TPO mRNA levels, suggesting that the amount of PAX-8 could play a role in the modulation of TPO gene expression. TTF-1 mRNA is always well detectable in papillary carcinomas and, in contrast, always absent in anaplastic carcinomas. Identical results were obtained when the expression of TTF-1 protein was investigated using immunohistochemistry. Thus, TTF-1 gene expression could be a molecular marker in order to distinguish these two types of thyroid neoplasms.

Abstract: In diabetes mellitus (DM), the circulating renin–angiotensin system (RAS) is suppressed, but the renal tissue RAS is activated. Hyperglycemia increases tissue angiotensin II (Ang II), which induces oxidative stress, endothelial damage and disease pathology including vasoconstriction, thrombosis, inflammation and vascular remodeling. In early DM, the type 1 Ang II (AT 1 ) receptor is upregulated but the type 2 Ang II (AT 2 ) receptor is downregulated. This imbalance can predispose the individual to tissue damage. Hyperglycemia also increases the production of aldosterone, which has an unknown contribution to tissue damage. The insulin resistance state is associated with upregulation of the AT 1 receptor and an increase in oxygen free radicals in endothelial tissue caused by activation of NAD(P)H oxidase. Treatment with an AT 1 receptor blocker normalizes oxidase activity and improves endothelial function. An understanding of the tissue renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system, which is a crucial factor in the progression of tissue damage in DM, is imperative for protection against tissue damage in this chronic disease.

Abstract: The use of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) as nonlinear speed and position observer for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives is a mature research topic. Notwithstanding, the shift from research prototype to a market-ready product still calls for a solution of some implementation pitfalls. The major and still unsolved topic is the choice of the EKF covariance matrices. This paper replaces the usual trial-and-error method with a straightforward matrices choice. These matrices, possibly combined with a novel self-tuning procedure, should put the EKF drive much closer to an off-the-shelf product. The proposed method is based on the complete normalisation of the EKF algorithm representation. Successful experimental results are included in the paper.

Abstract: Inclusive jet and dijet cross sections have been measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The cross sections were measured using jets clustered with the anti-kT algorithm with parameters R=0.4 and R=0.6. These measurements are based on the 2010 data sample, consisting of a total integrated luminosity of 37 inverse picobarns. Inclusive jet double-differential cross sections are presented as a function of jet transverse momentum, in bins of jet rapidity. Dijet double-differential cross sections are studied as a function of the dijet invariant mass, in bins of half the rapidity separation of the two leading jets. The measurements are performed in the jet rapidity range |y|<4.4, covering jet transverse momenta from 20 GeV to 1.5 TeV and dijet invariant masses from 70 GeV to 5 TeV. The data are compared to expectations based on next-to-leading order QCD calculations corrected for non-perturbative effects, as well as to next-to-leading order Monte Carlo predictions. In addition to a test of the theory in a new kinematic regime, the data also provide sensitivity to parton distribution functions in a region where they are currently not well-constrained.
