Antioxidant defences are reduced during the oral glucose tolerance test in normal and non-insulin-dependent diabetic subjects

Abstract: Background Free radical production has been reported to be increased in patients with diabetes mellitus, and it has been suggested that hyperglycaemia may directly contribute to the generation of oxidative stress. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of an acute increase in glycaemia on plasma antioxidant defences. Results During the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), plasma concentration of protein-bound sulphydryl (SH) groups, vitamin C, vitamin E and uric acid significantly decreased in normal as well as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) subjects. Total plasma radical-trapping activity, which evaluates plasma antioxidant capacity due to known and unknown antioxidants present in the plasma as well as their mutual co-operation, was also significantly reduced. Conclusion This finding supports the hypothesis that hyperglycaemia may, even acutely, induce an oxidative stress.

Algorithms for railway crew management

Abstract: Crew management is concerned with building the work schedules of crews needed to cover a planned timetable. This is a well-known problem in Operations Research and has been historically associated with airlines and mass-transit companies. More recently, railway applications have also come on the scene, especially in Europe. In practice, the overall crew management problem is decomposed into two subproblems, called crew scheduling and crew rostering. In this paper, we give an outline of different ways of modeling the two subproblems and possible solution methods. Two main solution approaches are illustrated for real-world applications. In particular we discuss in some detail the solution techniques currently adopted at the Italian railway company, Ferrovie dello Stato SpA, for solving crew scheduling and rostering problems.
