Abstract: Brain development in the first 2 years after birth is extremely dynamic and likely plays an important role in neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and schizophrenia Knowledge regarding this period is currently quite limited We studied structural brain development in healthy subjects from birth to 2 Ninety-eight children received structural MRI scans on a Siemens head-only 3T scanner with magnetization prepared rapid gradient echo T1-weighted, and turbo spin echo, dual-echo (proton density and T2 weighted) sequences: 84 children at 2–4 weeks, 35 at 1 year and 26 at 2 years of age Tissue segmentation was accomplished using a novel automated approach Lateral ventricle, caudate, and hippocampal volumes were also determined Total brain volume increased 101% in the first year, with a 15% increase in the second The majority of hemispheric growth was accounted for by gray matter, which increased 149% in the first year; hemispheric white matter volume increased by only 11% Cerebellum volume increased 240% in the first year Lateral ventricle volume increased 280% in the first year, with a small decrease in the second The caudate increased 19% and the hippocampus 13% from age 1 to age 2 There was robust growth of the human brain in the first two years of life, driven mainly by gray matter growth In contrast, white matter growth was much slower Cerebellum volume also increased substantially in the first year of life These results suggest the structural underpinnings of cognitive and motor development in early childhood, as well as the potential pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders

Abstract: Anomaly detection is a critical step towards building a secure and trustworthy system. The primary purpose of a system log is to record system states and significant events at various critical points to help debug system failures and perform root cause analysis. Such log data is universally available in nearly all computer systems. Log data is an important and valuable resource for understanding system status and performance issues; therefore, the various system logs are naturally excellent source of information for online monitoring and anomaly detection. We propose DeepLog, a deep neural network model utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), to model a system log as a natural language sequence. This allows DeepLog to automatically learn log patterns from normal execution, and detect anomalies when log patterns deviate from the model trained from log data under normal execution. In addition, we demonstrate how to incrementally update the DeepLog model in an online fashion so that it can adapt to new log patterns over time. Furthermore, DeepLog constructs workflows from the underlying system log so that once an anomaly is detected, users can diagnose the detected anomaly and perform root cause analysis effectively. Extensive experimental evaluations over large log data have shown that DeepLog has outperformed other existing log-based anomaly detection methods based on traditional data mining methodologies.

Abstract: Integral isoconversional methods may give rise to noticeable systematic error in the activation energy when the latter strongly varies with the extent of conversion. This error is eliminated by using an integration technique that properly accounts for the variation in the activation energy. The technique is implemented as a modification of the earlier proposed advanced isoconversional method [Vyazovkin, S. J Comput Chem 1997, 18, 393]. The applications of the modified method are illustrated by simulations as well as by processing of data on the thermal decomposition of calcium oxalate monohydrate and ammonium nitrate. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract: We used a database capturing large wildfires (> 405 ha) in the western U.S. to document regional trends in fire occurrence, total fire area, fire size, and day of year of ignition for 1984–2011. Over the western U.S. and in a majority of ecoregions, we found significant, increasing trends in the number of large fires and/or total large fire area per year. Trends were most significant for southern and mountain ecoregions, coinciding with trends toward increased drought severity. For all ecoregions combined, the number of large fires increased at a rate of seven fires per year, while total fire area increased at a rate of 355 km2 per year. Continuing changes in climate, invasive species, and consequences of past fire management, added to the impacts of larger, more frequent fires, will drive further disruptions to fire regimes of the western U.S. and other fire-prone regions of the world.
