TL;DR: Chitin synthetase, initially very low, was incorporated in important amounts into cell membranes mainly in a zymogenic state and was the most abundant polymer found in the aberrant wall of the regenerating protoplast of Candida albicans.
Abstract: The transition of blastospores to the mycelial phase in Candida albicans was induced after the blastospores were kept at 4 degrees C for several hours and then transferred to a fresh medium prewarmed at 37 degrees C. Glucan was the most abundant polymer in the wall in the two morphogenetic forms but the amount of chitin was higher in the mycelial form than in blastospores. Efficient protoplasting required reducing agents and proteases together with beta-glucanases (zymolyase). Protein synthesis in regenerating protoplasts was initiated after about 30 min. Chitin synthetase, initially very low, was incorporated in important amounts into cell membranes mainly in a zymogenic state. After a few hours chitin was the most abundant polymer found in the aberrant wall of the regenerating protoplast.

TL;DR: In this paper, tracheal sap of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Washington Navel was taken from field trees throughout the year and the nitrogen composition of the sap was determined.
Abstract: Samples of tracheal sap of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Washington Navel were taken from field trees throughout the year and the nitrogen composition of the sap was determined. The nitrogenous fraction of the sap was composed mainly of free amino acids (92–97% of total nitrogen) and nitrates throughout the year. Proline was the most abundant amino acid during almost the entire cycle, and its concentration was especially high during the autumn and winter period. Nevertheless, a significant part (40–60%) of the total organic nitrogen was transported as arginine. Total nitrogen as well as amino acids and nitrates were maximal at spring flush. At spring flush and summer flush there was also a diversification of α-amino nitrogen among different amino acids. During the spring flush, nitrates, asparagine and γ-aminobutyric acid in the xylem sap seemed to have a radicular origin, whereas glutamic acid and arginine were released from the surrounding parenchyma. The results suggest a metabolic transformation in the wood parenchyma of nitrogenous compounds coming from the roots (including reduction of nitrates) and a turnover of different nitrogen metabolites between the xylem and surrounding cells.

TL;DR: The vertical distribution of planktonic rotifers has been analysed in relation to season in several meromictic lakes; a coastal lagoon with sea-water intrusion and three dissolution lakes from two karstic systems, finding two species to be more or less restricted to the chemocline or adjacent strata any time they occurred.
Abstract: The vertical distribution of planktonic rotifers has been analysed in relation to season in several meromictic lakes; a coastal lagoon with sea-water intrusion and three dissolution lakes from two karstic systems. Two species, Filinia hofmanni and a form of Anuraeopsis fissa have been found to be more or less restricted to the chemocline or adjacent strata any time they occurred. Many species common in the upper water layers developed large populations near or in the chemocline and more strikingly in summer. Some species had two vertical maxima (one in the surface or the thermocline and another near the chemocline), while others successively shifted their maxima between the upper layers and the chemocline. It is hypothetized that these rotifers are either very versatile or are differentiated as ecotypes, one of them adapted to the chemocline environment. This distribution in a peculiar fluctuating, anoxic, H2S-rich environment poses questions about the biology of those rotifers which there develop extraordinary populations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the electron density and the molecular electrostatic potential of β-carbolines were studied using ab initioSTO-3G wave functions using a previous model built with monoamine oxidase substrates and irreversible inhibitors.
Abstract: The electron density and the molecular electrostatic potential of the β-carbolines are studied using ab initioSTO-3G wave functions. The analysis was done from the point of view of a previous model built with monoamine oxidase substrates and irreversible inhibitors. The results confirm the usefulness of the model and make it possible to propose new precision to the molecular electrostatic potential patterns needed to have monoamine oxidase inhibitory activity.

TL;DR: The results show that not only size, but also allometric coefficients are influenced by environmental factors, however, an important genetic component in the variation of shape and size has been visualized.
Abstract: Univariate comparisons and several multivariate statistical analyses have been performed to study the morphometric variability of B. plicatilis. Both laboratory clones kept under constant conditions and natural populations from different Spanish lagoons and different times of the year have been compared. The results show that not only size, but also allometric coefficients are influenced by environmental factors. However, an important genetic component in the variation of shape and size has been visualized. A clear North-South ordination of the populations of the different lagoons and an important dispersion between their summer populations as well as great differences due to seasonal variation became apparent by the multivariate statistical analysis used.

TL;DR: By means of a new experimental method designated here as "overfeeding", it has been possible to analyse the dynamics of this process and to show the existence of "stopped development" in 3rd instar larvae.
Abstract: It has been well established in competition studies among larvae that the developmental time from larva to adult is a function, among others, of culture density (Barker and Podger, 1970). The studies on minimal food requirements show the e'cistence of a "critical period" necessary to attain the pupal stage (Bakker, 1959, 1969; Robertson, 1963, 1964). The phenomena of competition among pre-adults are interpreted as a result of species interactions and/or genetic interactions, in the light of the methodology applied up to now (De Witt, 1960; Huang eta!., 1971; Toié and Ayala, 1981; Mather and Caligari, 1981). Generally no approach has been made to the dynamics of the larval competition process. By means of a new experimental method designated here as "overfeeding", it has been possible to analyse the dynamics of this process and to show the existence of "stopped development" in 3rd instar larvae. This phenomenon can lead to either larval death or pupation in the presence of a food supply.

TL;DR: The blockage of the xanthommatin pathway and high levels of red pigment seems to be the conditions required for the accumulation of kynurenic acid, which coincides with the development and deposition of eye pigments and suggests that its accumulation is due to the metabolism of them and not to the general metabolism of tryptophan in the insect.

TL;DR: In this article, a conformational optimization for all isomers of bifurans and bipyrroles has been studied by performing a complete geometry optimization for each conformation.
Abstract: An INDO-SCF-LCAO-MO study has been performed for all isomers of bifurans and bipyrroles. The conformational problem for these molecules has been studied by performing a complete geometry optimization for each conformation. The trans conformers are the most stable for all isomers except for 2,3′-bifuran where the greater stability corresponds to the cis conformer. The torsional barrier about the interannular bond is also estimated for all isomers, together with total geometry optimization. The barriers are of relative significance but enable attainment of equilibria between both conformers. The particular case of 1,1′-bipyrrole, where an angular conformation presents the greater stability as a compromise between the contrary effects of nonbonded interactions and interannular conjugation, is discussed. The importance of performing geometry optimization on conformational problems is established.

TL;DR: In this article, spectrophotometric and cryoscopic studies of the molybdenum (VI)-lactic acid (C3O3H6) system show the existence of three different oxoanion complexes in aqueous solution which have been isolated as [Co(en)3]3+ salts.
Abstract: Spectrophotometric and cryoscopic studies of the molybdenum(VI)-lactic acid (C3O3H6) system show the existence of three different oxoanion complexes in aqueous solution which have been isolated as [Co(en)3]3+ salts. These are one molybdodilactate {[MoO2(C3O3H42]2−} and two dinuclear 1/1 species: [Mo2O5(C3O3H4)2(H2O)2]2− and [Mo2O3(OH)3-(C3O3H4)2]−. The pH of the medium is the main variable, controlling the formation equilibria which are similar to those previously described for other α-hydroxy-acid ligands.

TL;DR: De novo synthesis of chitin synthase, but not of glucan synth enzyme, is observed in S. cerevisiae from about 30 minutes after initiation of the regeneration process and in the presence of the former one, no microcrystalline lattice of the polymer is formed and protoplasts do not regenerate correctly.
Abstract: Accumulation of chitin and glucan on S. cerevisiae and C. albicans protoplasts begins shortly after resuspension in the regeneration medium, and mannoprotein molecules also appear retained by the regenerating wall after 30–60 minutes in S. cerevisiae or after a longer lag period in C. albicans. Nevertheless, a considerable fraction of the synthesized mannoproteins, which in SDS-acrylamide gels exhibit a different pattern from that of wall mannoproteins of cells, are still released to the growth medium during at least eight hours. De novo synthesis of chitin synthase, but not of glucan synthase, is observed in S. cerevisiae from about 30 minutes after initiation of the regeneration process. The interaction between microfibrils of nascent chitin formed by C. albicans protoplasts is altered by stains as Calcofluor White or Congo Red. In the presence of the former one, no microcrystalline lattice of the polymer is formed and protoplasts do not regenerate correctly.

TL;DR: The current information considers that out of several parameters, the selected prognostic parameters used for the IPI are sufficient to establish probability tests and a reliable estimation of life expectancy following breast cancer surgery.
Abstract: The authors present 611 and 262 case histories of patients with breast cancer, studied 5 and 10 years after mastectomy, respectively; 27 clinical and 10 histologic parameters were considered for the statistical evaluation, in order to define an Individualized Prognostic Index (IPI) for breast cancer survivability. The probability of survival was estimated by a Bayesian formula using selected prognostic parameters, these parameters were placed in order of discriminant resolution and, for the calculation of the IPI, were selected according to their importance, as it follows: 5 years after surgery: percent affected nodules, dermal infiltration, TNM phase, Scarff-Bloom index and evolutive outbreak (PEV); 10 years after surgery: TNM phase, dermal infiltration, percent affected nodules and Scarff-Bloom index. The current information considers that out of several parameters, the selected prognostic parameters used for the IPI are sufficient to establish probability tests and a reliable estimation of life expectancy following breast cancer surgery.
