Abstract: The importance of monoterpenes on varietal flavour of must and other fruit juices has been reviewed. These compounds were mainly found linked to sugar moieties in grape juice and wines, showing no olfactory characteristics. In this way, analytical techniques developed to study these compounds, in both free or glycosidically forms, are discussed. Mechanisms to liberate terpenes were studied, making a comparative study between acidic and enzymic hydrolysis of terpene glycosides; as enzymic hydrolysis seems to be the most natural way to liberate terpenes, the ability to use glycosidases from grapes, yeasts, bacterial or exogenous, i.e. fungal commercial preparations, were reviewed. Re-arrangements of terpenes after acidic hydrolysis of glycoconjugated are discussed as well as potential adverse effects of enzyme preparations.

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether olive oils high in phenolic compounds influence the oxidative/antioxidative status in humans. Healthy men (n = 12) participated in a double-blind, randomized, crossover study in which 3 olive oils with low (LPC), moderate (MPC), and high (HPC) phenolic content were given as raw doses (25 mL/d) for 4 consecutive days preceded by 10-d washout periods. Volunteers followed a strict very low-antioxidant diet the 3 d before and during the intervention periods. Short-term consumption of olive oils decreased plasma oxidized LDL (oxLDL), 8-oxo-dG in mitochondrial DNA and urine, malondialdehyde in urine (P < 0.05 for linear trend), and increased HDL cholesterol and glutathione peroxidase activity (P < 0.05 for linear trend), in a dose-dependent manner with the phenolic content of the olive oil administered. At d 4, oxLDL after MPC and HPC, and 8-oxo-dG after HPC administration (25 mL, respectively), were reduced when the men were in the postprandial state (P < 0.05). Phenolic compounds in plasma increased dose dependently during this stage with the phenolic content of the olive oils at 1, 2, 4, and 6 h, respectively (P < 0.01). Their concentrations increased in plasma and urine samples in a dose-dependent manner after short-term consumption of the olive oils (P < 0.01). In conclusion, the olive oil phenolic content modulated the oxidative/antioxidative status of healthy men who consumed a very low-antioxidant diet.

Abstract: Investigation at a f-factory can shed light on several debated issues in particle physics. We discuss: (i) recent theoretical development and experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in the flavor sector, (ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum Mechanics from time evolution of entangled-kaon states, (iii) the interest for improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of kaons and eta/eta' mesons, (iv) the contribution to understand the nature of light scalar mesons, and (v) the opportunity to search for narrow di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter sector. We also report on the e(+)e(-) physics in the continuum with the measurements of (multi) hadronic cross sections and the study of gamma gamma processes.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of microvascular obstruction (MO) and infarct size as a percentage of left ventricular mass (IS%LV), as measured by contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance, in predicting major cardiovascular adverse events (MACE) at 2 years in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction reperfused by primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Individual data from 1,025 patients were entered into the pooled analysis. MO was associated with the occurrence of MACE, defined as a composite of cardiac death, congestive heart failure, and myocardial re-infarction (adjusted hazard ratio: 3.74; 95% confidence interval: 2.21 to 6.34). IS%LV ≥25% was not associated with MACE (adjusted hazard ratio: 0.90; 95% confidence interval: 0.59 to 1.37). The authors conclude that MO is an independent predictor of MACE and cardiac death, whereas IS%LV is not independently associated with MACE.
