Abstract: The VST Photometric HSurvey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+) is surveying the southern Milky Way in u,g,r,i and Hat �1 arcsec angular resolution. Its footprint spans the Galactic latitude range 5 o < b < +5 o at all longitudes south of the celestial equator. Extensions around the Galactic Centre to Galactic latitudes ±10 ◦ bring in much of the Galactic Bulge. This ESO public sur- vey, begun on 28th December 2011, reaches down to �20th magnitude (10�) and will provide single-epoch digital optical photometry for �300 million stars. The observing strategy and data pipelining is described, and an appraisal of the segmented narrow- band Hfilter in use is presented. Using model atmospheres and library spectra, we compute main-sequence (u g), (g r), (r i) and (r H�) stellar colours in the Vega system. We report on a preliminary validation of the photometry using test data obtained from two pointings overlapping the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. An example of the (u g,g r) and (r H�,r i) diagrams for a full VPHAS+ survey field is given. Attention is drawn to the opportunities for studies of compact nebulae and nebular morphologies that arise from the image quality being achieved. The value of the u band as the means to identify planetary-nebula central stars is demonstrated by the discovery of the central star of NGC 2899 in survey data. Thanks to its excellent imaging performance, the VST/OmegaCam combination used by this survey is a per- fect vehicle for automated searches for reddened early-type stars, and will allow the discovery and analysis of compact binaries, white dwarfs and transient sources.

Abstract: Aims. We investigate the dependence of γ-ray brightness of blazars on intrinsic properties of their parsec-scale radio jets and the implication for relativistic beaming. Methods. By combining apparent jet speeds derived from high-resolution VLBA images from the MOJAVE program with millimetrewavelength flux density monitoring data from Metsahovi Radio Observatory, we estimate the jet Doppler factors, Lorentz factors, and viewing angles for a sample of 62 blazars. We study the trends in these quantities between the sources which were detected in γ-rays by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) during its first three months of science operations and those which were not detected. Results. The LAT-detected blazars have on average higher Doppler factors than non-LAT-detected blazars, as has been implied indirectly in several earlier studies. We find statistically significant differences in the viewing angle distributions between γ-ray bright and weak sources. Most interestingly, γ-ray bright blazars have a distribution of comoving frame viewing angles that is significantly narrower than that of γ-ray weak blazars and centred roughly perpendicular to the jet axis. The lack of γ-ray bright blazars at large comoving frame viewing angles can be explained by relativistic beaming of γ-rays, while the apparent lack of γ-ray bright blazars at small comoving frame viewing angles, if confirmed with larger samples, may suggest an intrinsic anisotropy or Lorentz factor dependence of the γ-ray emission.

Abstract: The complex antioxidant network of plant and animal cells has the thiol tripeptide GSH at its centre to buffer ROS (reactive oxygen species) and facilitate cellular redox signalling which controls growth, development and defence GSH is found in nearly every compartment of the cell, including the nucleus Transport between the different intracellular compartments is pivotal to the regulation of cell proliferation GSH co-localizes with nuclear DNA at the early stages of proliferation in plant and animal cells Moreover, GSH recruitment and sequestration in the nucleus during the G1- and S-phases of the cell cycle has a profound impact on cellular redox homoeostasis and on gene expression For example, the abundance of transcripts encoding stress and defence proteins is decreased when GSH is sequestered in the nucleus The functions of GSHn (nuclear GSH) are considered in the present review in the context of whole-cell redox homoeostasis and signalling, as well as potential mechanisms for GSH transport into the nucleus We also discuss the possible role of GSHn as a regulator of nuclear proteins such as histones and PARP [poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase] that control genetic and epigenetic events In this way, a high level of GSH in the nucleus may not only have an immediate effect on gene expression patterns, but also contribute to how cells retain a memory of the cellular redox environment that is transferred through generations
