Abstract: Recent genomic analyses of arthropod defense mechanisms suggest conservation of key elements underlying responses to pathogens, parasites and stresses. At the center of pathogen-induced immune responses are signaling pathways triggered by the recognition of fungal, bacterial and viral signatures. These pathways result in the production of response molecules, such as antimicrobial peptides and lysozymes, which degrade or destroy invaders. Using the recently sequenced genome of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum), we conducted the first extensive annotation of the immune and stress gene repertoire of a hemipterous insect, which is phylogenetically distantly related to previously characterized insects models. Strikingly, pea aphids appear to be missing genes present in insect genomes characterized to date and thought critical for recognition, signaling and killing of microbes. In line with results of gene annotation, experimental analyses designed to characterize immune response through the isolation of RNA transcripts and proteins from immune-challenged pea aphids uncovered few immune-related products. Gene expression studies, however, indicated some expression of immune and stress-related genes. The absence of genes suspected to be essential for the insect immune response suggests that the traditional view of insect immunity may not be as broadly applicable as once thought. The limitations of the aphid immune system may be representative of a broad range of insects, or may be aphid specific. We suggest that several aspects of the aphid life style, such as their association with microbial symbionts, could facilitate survival without strong immune protection.

Abstract: Soil aggregation in relation to other soil properties was studied along a climatological transect in the Southeast of Spain. Three sites were selected along this transect ranging from semiarid to subhumid climatological conditions. The aggregate size distribution, the macro and microaggregate stability of the superficial soil horizon and their relations with other soil properties were analysed. Large aggregates (>10, 10–5, 5–2 mm) were present in highest proportions in the most arid of the studied areas. These large aggregates were associated with high values of water-stable microaggregates; however, they did not improve soil structure and are related to high bulk densities and low water retention. Aggregates 1–0.105 mm were positively correlated to medium, fine, very fine sand and silt fractions and to organic matter. Aggregates Water stability of microaggregates showed a positive correlation with clay content while the stability of the macroaggregates depended on the organic matter content when the organic matter content was greater than 5 or 6%. Below that threshold the carbonate content was strongly correlated with aggregate stability. A general conceptual scheme of associations between aggregate size distribution, water-stable microaggregation and textural characteristics for the area was developed. The land use history affecting soil overlaps the pattern of climatological situations and has to be taken into account. Aggregate size distribution and stability can be used as indicator of soil degradation, but not as a unique parameter.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to study the mechanism of free radical formation in type 1 diabetes and its possible prevention. We have found oxidation of blood glutathione and an increase in plasma lipoperoxide levels in both human type 1 diabetes and experimental diabetes. Peroxide production by mitochondria does not increase in diabetes. On the contrary, the activity of xanthine oxidase, a superoxide-generating enzyme, increases in liver and plasma of diabetic animals. The increase in plasma xanthine oxidase activity may be explained by the increase in the hepatic release of this enzyme, which is not due to nonspecific membrane damage: release of other hepatic enzymes, such as the amino transferases, does not increase in diabetes. Superoxide formation by aortic rings of rabbits increases significantly in diabetes. This is completely inhibited by allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase. Heparin, which releases xanthine oxidase from the vessel wall, also decreases superoxide formation by aortic rings of diabetic animals. Treatment with allopurinol decreases oxidative stress in type 1 diabetic patients: hemoglobin glycation, glutathione oxidation, and the increase in lipid peroxidation are prevented. These results may have clinical significance in the prevention of late-onset vascular complications of diabetes.

Abstract: In multi-Higgs-doublet models the alignment in flavor space of the relevant Yukawa matrices guarantees the absence of tree-level flavor-changing couplings of the neutral scalar fields. We analyze the consequences of this condition within the two-Higgs-doublet model and show that it leads to a generic Yukawa structure which contains as particular cases all known specific implementations of the model based on ${\mathcal{Z}}_{2}$ symmetries. All possible freedom in the Yukawa sector gets parametrized in terms of three complex couplings ${\ensuremath{\varsigma}}_{f}$. In spite of having flavor conservation in the neutral scalar couplings, the phases of these three parameters represent potential new sources of $CP$ violation.
