Effect of Gestyl on the Urinary Excretion of Oestrogen in Ewes During the Non‐Breeding Season

Abstract: Summary Merino ewes were injected with serum gonadotrophin (Gestyl) During June and July. The maximum values for the total urinary excretion of oestrone, 17 alpha oestradiol and oestriol occurred 9 and 36 hours after the injection in June and July, respectively. Activity in the vagina and cervix and the presence of arborization resulting from the injection were more marked during June than during July. Zusammenfassung Der Einflus von Gestyl auf die Oestrogen-Ausscheidung im Harn bei Schafen wahrend der sexuellen Ruheperiode (Non-Breeding Season) Wahrend der Monate Juni und Juli wurde Merino-Schafen das Serum Gonadotropin Gestyl injiziert. Die maximalen Ausscheidungen von Oestron, 17-alpha-oestradiol und Oestriol traten 9 und 36 Stunden nach der Injektion auf. Im Juni war die Aktivitat der Vagina und der Zervix und die Arborisation des Zervixschleimes ausgepragter als im Juli. Resume L'influence du «Gestyl» sur la secretion de oestrogenes dans l'urine chez le mouton pendant la periode de repos sexuel On a injecte a des moutons de la race merino du «Gestyl» (gonadotropine serique) pendant les mois de juin et juillet. Les secretions maximales d'oestrone, de 17-α-oestradiol et d'oestriol sont intervenues 9 et 36 heures apres l'injection. On a observe une plus grande activite du vagin et du cervix ainsi qu'une mucosite arborisante plus accrue du cervix en juin qu'en juillet. Resumen Efecto de Gestyl sobre la excrecion urinaria de estrogeno en ovejas durante la temporada no gravidica Durante los meses Junio y Julio se inyecto a ovejas merinas la gonadotropina serica Gestyl. Las excreciones maximas de oestrona, 17 alfa oestradiol y oestriol acaecian 9 y 36 horas despues de la inyeccion. En Junio era bastante mas marcada la actividad en la vagina y cuello uterino y la arborizacion del moco cervical que en Julio.

Bilateral corneal dermoids and eyelid malformation in a colt – a case report

Abstract: A 4-month-old colt was presented to the Department and Clinic of Equine Medicine, University of Veterinary Science, Hungary for the evaluation of chronic bilateral mucopurulent discharge and mild blepharospasm. On ophthalmic examination, pigmented skin with long hairs located ventrotemporally on both corneas, a cluster of aberrant long hairs protruding from both caruncles and medial canthi, and a duplicated inferior eyelid of the left eye were identified. Surgical excision of limbic dermoids on both eyes and blepharoplasty appeared curative at the 6-month post-operative follow-up. This case report describes unusually located bilateral limbic dermoids in a horse. In addition, the dermoid on the left eye was accompanied by eyelid malformation. This unique combination of ocular congenital lesions has not been described in a horse so far. Blepharoplasty, cornea, horse, superficial keratectomy Choristomas are congenital lesions representing normal tissue in an abnormal location. Ocular examples of choristomas are epibulbar dermoid, ectopic lacrimal gland or episcleral osseous choristoma (Mansour et al. 1989). Ocular dermoids are non-progressive, unilateral or bilateral lesions consisting of epithelial and dermis-like components on the cornea, limbus, conjunctiva or the third eyelid (Cook 2007; Clode and Matthews 2011). They are found in all species and known to be inherited in Hereford cattle and occasionally familial in humans (Barkyoumb and Leipold 1984; Mansour et al. 1989; Maggs 2008). Ocular dermoids in horses have been reported in a group of related Quarter Horses in association with iridal hypoplasia and cataracts, in a Standardbred colt with no other ocular abnormality, and as a third eyelid dermoid in a Gypsy Vanner gelding causing chronic recurrent corneal ulcers (McLaughlin 1983; Joyce et al. 1990; Greenberg et al. 2012). To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report describing bilateral dermoids combined with an eyelid malformation in a horse.

Experimental infection of weaned calves and lambs with two strains of bovine adenovirus type 2.

Abstract: Summary The pathogenicity of two genetically different strains of bovine adenovirus type 2 (BAV-2) was tested in a double cross experimental infection of weaned lambs and calves. One of the virus strains was isolated from cattle and represented BAV-2 subgroup “A”, while the other was isolated from sheep and belonged to subgroup “B” (Belak et al., 1983). The two virus strains caused infection both in lambs and calves; the viruses were repeatedly reisolated and definite seroconversion was found in all four groups. However, remarkable differences were observed in the pathogenicity: the most intensive virus multiplication and shedding, the most severe clinical symptoms and histopathological lesions were observed in the lamb group infected with the ovine isolate.

Systems of ordinal fuzzy logic with application to preference modelling.

Abstract: In this paper, we survey several many-valued propositional logics in which the truth-functions (in the real unit interval [0,1] ) of their connectives are definable only from the natural ordering of the scale, without using any richer algebraic structure. In particular we describe a complete notion of proof for weighted formulas of the implication-free fragment of Godel logic with involution. The usefulness of this logical framework for the formalization of ordinal preference modelling is also shown.
