Abstract: The age-dependent aspects of resistance to Cryptosporidium baileyi were studied in chickens orally inoculated with C. baileyi oocysts at 1 and 9 wk of age. The prepatent period was significantly shorter and the patency was significantly longer in younger birds. Chickens infected at 1 wk of age excreted 3 times the number of oocysts excreted by those inoculated at 9 wk of age. There was a good correlation between the length of the patent period and the total oocyst output of chickens. These results indicate that both innate and acquired resistance to C. baileyi are age-related. The numbers of animals needed per experimental group to estimate the length of the prepatent period, the patency, and the total oocyst output were assessed. Relatively small numbers of animals are required for the estimation of the mean length of the prepatent period, in contrast with the large numbers of birds needed for the estimation of the mean length of the patent period or that of the total oocyst excretion.

Abstract: Veterinarians in Hungary were asked to complete a questionnaire on traumatic myiasis; of the 664 veterinarians contacted, 247 replied (37.2 per cent) and of these 209 (84.6 per cent) reported myiasis to be a problem among the livestock they treated. Infestation levels of >10 per cent of animals were reported in sheep, cattle and horses. The myiasis season lasted from March to November with most cases reported in July and August. Significantly more respondents reported that fly larvae were present deep in wounds rather than superficially, consistent with infestations due to the obligate parasite Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Frequent inspections and the treatment of infested animals were reported by 64.1 per cent of respondents as contributing to the economic impact of traumatic myiasis, and approximately half of the respondents (51.4 per cent) reported that inspections and treatments were carried out at least weekly during the summer. The most common form of treatment was the manual removal of larvae followed by topical application of insecticides, particularly organophosphates. More than half of the respondents (56.6 per cent) reported that there had been no change in the importance of myiasis over the last five to 10 years, but of those who reported a change, more reported an increase (28.3 per cent) than a decrease (15.2 per cent).

Abstract: The morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics of 80 M. pachydermatis strains isolated from cases of canine otitis externa were studied. Microscopically, the strains could be subdivided into two phenotypes. All M. pachydermatis strains grew well on Sabouraud glucose, yeast morphology and modified malt extract agar, but formed two distinct colony types. All strains were characterized by no fermentation. Assimilation of glucose, mannitol (42 strains), sorbitol (40 strains) and peptone was observed, but no ethanol assimilation. Urease and catalase tests were positive, while indole and acetoin production was not detected. All strains showed proteinase, caseinase, lecithinase and peroxidase positivity but to varying extents. Esterase activity was observed for all Malassezia strains when using Tween 20, 40 and 60, whereas Tween 80 was hydrolysed by only 42 strains. No coagulase or haemagglutinating activities were detected. When compared for satellite phenomenon and vitamin requirements, some Malassezia strains could not grow in the absence of nicotinic acid but grew well in the presence of staphylococci. In susceptibility tests, all strains showed the highest susceptibility to ketoconazole. On the basis of the biochemical differences, M. pachydermatis seems to be a heterogeneous species and can be divided into two groups.

Abstract: Summary In a 10‐year‐old ovariohysterectomized standard Schnauzer, the finding of dexamethasone‐resistant hypersecretion of cortisol, the results of computed tomography, and elevated plasma concentrations of ACTH suggested the presence of both adrenocortical tumour and pituitary‐dependent hyperadrenocorticism. The dog made an uneventful recovery after bilateral adrenalectomy and remained in good health for 31/2 years with substitution for the induced hypoadrenocorticism. Then the enlarged pituitary caused neurological signs and eventually euthanasia was performed. The surgically excised right adrenal contained a well‐circumscribed tumour of differentiated adrenocortical tissue and in the left adrenal there were two adrenocortical tumours and a pheochromocytoma. The unaffected parts of the adrenal cortices were well developed and without regressive transformation. At necropsy there were no metastatic lesions. Abstract: Viruses of the honey bee have been known for a long time; however, recently the attention of scientists and apiculturalists has turned towards the relationship between these viruses and the parasitic mite Varroa jacobsoni. Although clinical symptoms indicated the presence of some of the viruses of bees in Hungary, none have previously been isolated or identified. During July unusual adult bee and brood mortality was observed in some colonies of an apiary in Budapest known to be infested with Varroa jacobsoni. Large amounts of acute paralysis virus (APV) were detected serologically in healthy honey bee pupae killed by the injection of a bacteria-free extract of diseased adult bees. Crystalline arrays of 30 nm particles were seen in ultrathin sections of the tissues of injected pupae and naturally infected adult bees. In spite of the application of acaricide treatments the bee population in several colonies had collapsed by the end of summer and the apiary suffered severe wintering losses.
