Abstract: To investigate the bacterial content and risk factors associated with the hygienic quality of raw milk, a cross-sectional study was conducted in four townships of Mandalay Region, Myanmar. From April to October 2017, bulk tank milk samples (n = 233) were collected from 233 dairy cattle farms located in Tada-U, Pyin Oo Lwin, Meiktila, and Patheingyi Townships. From each farm, approximately 100 ml of bulk tank milk was collected and examined for bacterial content. Total bacterial count (TBC) and coliform count (CC) in milk samples were determined using milk agar and violet red bile agar. Of 233 milk samples, 68.2% (159/233) showed TBC higher than 1.0 × 105 cfu/ml, and 78.4% (183/233) showed CC higher than 100 cfu/ml. The mean value of TBC among 233 farms was 2.55 × 107 cfu/ml, ranging from 6.0 × 103 to 3.0 × 109 cfu/ml, whereas the mean value of CC was 1.59 × 105 cfu/ml, ranging from 10 to 8.4 × 106 cfu/ml. TBC tended to increase as CC increased in milk samples. The number of precautionary measures for milking operation, choice of cleaning materials, training experience of the farmers, cleanliness score of milking cows, and CMT scores of milk were significantly associated (p < 0.05) with TBC in bulk tank milk. Similarly, the number of precautionary measures for milking operation, choice of cleaning materials, training experience of the farmers, cleanliness scores of milking cows, CMT scores of milk samples, herd size, and type of milking practice showed significant association (p < 0.05) with CC in bulk tank milk. The effects of these potential risk factors should be minimized, farmers should be trained properly, and technical support should be provided, so that the quality of raw milk produced in Myanmar can be improved.

Abstract: A new, effective drug combination was developed for the therapy of canine otitis externa (OE) by taking into consideration the microorganisms most frequently isolated from dogs affected with OE, their combination, their drug sensitivity and the type and incidence of ear canal inflammation. The antimycotic active ingredient of the combination is ketoconazole, its antibacterial component is gentamicin sulphate, while its antiphlogistic constituent is mazipredone hydrochloride. Based upon the results of in vitro pharmacodynamic tests, the antifungal activity of the combination is superior to that of ketoconazole used alone at the same concentration. A total of 210 dogs affected with OE were treated with the combination: 94.2 per cent of them became clinically symptomless and microbiologically negative in an average of 8.5 days. No adverse reactions were observed in connection with the use of the drug combination. The therapeutic results can be attributed to the high antifungal efficacy of the combination demonstrated in vitro and to the favourable properties of the solvent mixture.

Abstract: The effect of mixed animal fat and sunflower oil supplementation (5%) of a feed of medium (1202 MJ DE/kg) and low (854 MJ DE/kg) energy concentration upon the digestibility of nutrients and on some blood parameters was investigated The ether-extractable content of feed and faecal samples was determined by diethyl ether extraction (after Soxhlet) and the total (true) fat level was measured by the method of Stoldt (1952), viz petroleum ether extraction of samples pretreated with 4 N HCl In the majority of cases the voluntary feed intake decreased after the addition of animal fat or vegetable oil Mixed animal fat supplementation significantly (by 5 and 11 units) improved the digestibility of the ether extract if added to either of the basal diets The digestibility of crude fibre and N-free extract increased only in the case of the basal diet of low energy concentration (by 4 and 7 units, respectively) Sunflower oil addition produced changes of the same tendency (9, 9, 28 and 5 units) The digestibility of the crude protein was practically not altered by either supplementation The total fat content of feed and faecal samples proved to be higher than that of the ether extract, on an average by 27 and 100%, respectively Consequently, the digestibility coefficients of the total fat are by 10 units lower than those of the ether extract The DE concentrations, calculated by means of the digestible ether extract or the total fat content, differed significantly only between the basal diets The addition of mixed animal fat to either of the basal diets increased the blood concentration of total lipids (by 18 and 32%, respectively), while that of sunflower oil did not cause such an alteration Neither fat nor oil supplementation had an effect on the cholesterol level of the blood plasma Both the animal fat and the vegetable oil surplus modified the fatty acid composition of blood lipids It was characteristic of each treatment that the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids increased
