Abstract: Coccidiosis is of great economic importance in many farm animals. This study involved analysis of 280 faecal samples collected from 12 traditional goat farms from Nay Pyi Taw area, Myanmar. Faecal samples were examined by the flotation method and concentrated oocysts were identified on the basis of morphological characters. Of 280 faecal samples examined, 168 (60.0%) were positive for Eimeria oocysts. Three different Eimeria species were identified and their positive detection rates in the herd were: E. arloingi (25.4%), followed by E. hirci (20.7%) and E. christenseni (13.9%). Identifications were confirmed by 18S rDNA and COI sequences. 18S rDNA sequences showed 100% homology with, respectively, E. christenseni reported from Australia, E. arloingi reported from Australia and Iran, and E. hirci from Australia. COI sequences of E. christenseni, E. hirci, and E. arloingi, respectively, exhibited 98.9%, 98.4%, and 98.5% similarities with those reported from Australia. This is the first report of Eimeria infection in Myanmar goats.

Abstract: Quantitative two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) was introduced into equine cardiology in the early 1990s. At first, linear and area dimensions and left ventricular volume were validated by the comparison of parameters determined during in vitro 2DE and autopsy measurements. Based on these studies, tomographic planes and intracardiac reference points for in vivo measurements were established and 2DE values have been determined for healthy adult horses by various authors. These data were similar to each other and proved to be comparable with M-mode echocardiography measurements. However, differences in the measured parameters are due to breed and body weight variations of the examined populations, as well as to technical differences between M-mode and 2DE measurement methods. Currently, little information is available on 2DE values in equine cardiac diseases. In one report, 23 horses with aortic insufficiency had significant increases in the mean values of left ventricular chamber size, aortic root diameter and shortening fraction, and left ventricular thickness was also increased. These values were measured by M-mode echocardiography, but diastolic left ventricular enlargement was also measured and illustrated by the use of 2DE. In another study, 38 horses with mitral insufficiency had increased diastolic values of left ventricular and atrial cross-sectional internal diameter.

Abstract: Summary A total of seven Bacteroides ureolyticus strains were isolated from the cervix and the clitoral fossa of mares with vaginal discharge. No other bacteria capable of causing metritis or vaginitis were isolated from the samples. The isolated strains resembled Taylorella equigenitalis. Both species are catalase, oxidase and alkaline phosphatase positive, but, in addition to these characteristics, B. ureolyticus strains produced urease and they could not tolerate 10% O2. They also failed to be agglutinated in a hyperimmune serum raised against T. equigenitalis; however, B. ureolyticus and T. equigenitalis were agglutinated in the slide agglutination test in a serum produced against one of the B. ureolyticus isolates. Further investigations are needed to clarify the pathologic role of B. ureolyticus in genital infections of mares and other animals.

Abstract: After vitrification of oocytes, fertilization rates and subsequent development are unsatisfactory, possibly due in part to zona hardening. Foetal calf serum (FCS) can prevent zona hardening because of its fetuin content, but FCS composition varies among batches, and may contain viruses. In this study, we therefore compared media supplemented with different sources of macromolecules, 2% bovine serum albumin (BSA), 2% BSA + 1 mg/ml fetuin and 20% FCS, for handling oocytes for 10-30 min prior to vitrification. None of the treatments resulted in developmental rates comparable with the non-vitrified controls, but FCS inclusion in pre-vitrification handling medium resulted in higher blastocyst production per oocyte (p < 0.05) (10.8%) on day 9 of culture than BSA (5.3%) or BSA + fetuin (6.4%). Blastocysts developing from oocytes from all vitrification treatments were somewhat retarded relative to those developed from non-vitrified oocytes. We also tested the use of fetuin during vitrification as well as two different exposure times with cryoprotectants, 180 and 30 s. There was no significant effect of fetuin or exposure time on rates of subsequent blastocyst production.
