TL;DR: The characteristics of the inhibition of the uptake of labelled hormones by non-labelled iodothyronines speak in favour of the presence of specific, separate uptake sites for T3 and T4 in the blood-brain barrier of young chickens.
Abstract: The instant uptake of 125-I-labelled triiodothyronine and 125-I-thyroxine by the brain tissue was measured in sham-operated (SH) controls, thyroidectomized (TX) and thyroidectomized plus iodothyronine supplemented (TX+T3 or TX+T4) young chickens. It was found that thyroidectomy significantly increases the uptake of iodothyronines, and iodothyronine supplementation returns the uptake close to sham-operated levels. The characteristics of the inhibition of the uptake of labelled hormones by non-labelled iodothyronines speak in favour of the presence of specific, separate uptake sites for T3 and T4 in the blood-brain barrier of young chickens.

TL;DR: It is concluded, that the remote glial response in the visual cortex is transient and that its disappearance indicates the end of a postlesional adaptation period in the neuropil.
Abstract: Changes in the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein by astrocytes in the primary visual cortex of adult albino rats were analyzed with immunohisto-chemistry after unilateral destruction of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus. An increase in number of glial fibrillary acidic protein-immunoreactive astrocytes could be detected in the visual cortex of the side ipsilateral to the lesion in the short-term survival group (7–11 days post lesion), but this increase was extremely reduced after a postlesional survival time of 150 days. The quantitation of the glial response by image analysis showed, that the initial increase was mainly localized in the cortical layers II–IV, where the geniculo-cortical input terminates. The transient nature of this process was revealed by the measurements in the long-term survival group, where differences between experimental and control sides were substantially reduced. We conclude, that the remote glial response in the visual cortex is transient and that its disappearance indicates the end of a postlesional adaptation period in the neuropil.

TL;DR: The blockade of the biological progesterone effect was associated with an increase in activity of both collagenases, and at interplacental sites, the amount of active collagenases in the myometrium was significantly lower in the control group.
Abstract: Contents Aim of this study was to determine the intrauterine activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9 after cessation of the local effect of progesterone. For this purpose, pregnancy was terminated in 10 bitches at mid-gestation with the progesterone receptor antagonist aglepristone (10 mg/kg body weight, sc, Alizine®; Virbac, France) at two subsequent days (group IRA = induced resorption/abortion). The IRA group was divided into two subgroups (Group I, n = 5, days 25–35 of pregnancy; group II, n = 5, days 36–45). Five further bitches were introduced with beginning abortion (group SRA = spontaneous resorption/abortion). Seven healthy bitches between day 25 and 45 of gestation served as controls. After ovariohysterectomy at the end of abortion and between days 25 and 45 of gestation, respectively, the distribution and activity of collagenases were investigated by immunohistochemistry and gelatin zymography. At placental sites, MMP-2 activity in the endometrium was significantly lower in IRA groups than in the SRA group (33.7 ± 11.8% and 39.3 ± 5.4% vs 52.2 ± 10.2%, p < 0.05); however, MMP-2 expression was lowest in the control group (control: 21.4 ± 6.3%; p < 0.01) and similarly in the myometrium (controls: 13.1 ± 2.5%; p < 0.05). MMP-9 activity was also lower in the endometrium and myometrium of the control group in comparison to SRA and IRA groups (11.8 ± 3.2%; p < 0.01 and 28.4 ± 32.8%; p < 0.05). At interplacental sites, the amount of active collagenases in the myometrium was significantly lower in the control group. It is concluded that the blockade of the biological progesterone effect was associated with an increase in activity of both collagenases.

TL;DR: A significant increase in the number of cases with spiro cercosis in Hungary between 2007 and 2016 is shown, and this this disease is prevalent at all times of year.
Abstract: The nematode Spirocerca lupi (Rudolphi 1809) is widely distributed, classically causing parasitic nodules in the esophagus, aortic aneurysms and spondylitis. Clinical signs of infection are regurgitation, vomiting, weight loss, coughing, dyspnea and, rarely, sudden death. This retrospective study (2007 – 2016) investigated the prevalence and treatment outcome of Hungarian dogs with esophageal spirocercosis presented at the Endoscope Laboratory of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest (ELUVMBP). The change in the annual number of cases/upper gastrointestinal endoscopies (UGIE) and cases/ total number of endoscopies (TNE, the entire case load of ELUVMBP), and the efficacy of different treatment methods were examined. In the time period mentioned above, a total of 30 patients referred for UGIE were diagnosed with spirocercosis. The annual case numbers significantly increased in comparison to both the number of UGIEs (P = 0.0085) and TNEs (P = 0.0096). The annual distribution of cases does not differ significantly from an even distribution (P = 0.1589). Our study showed a significant increase in the number Original Article WAAVP_2017.indb 99 29.06.17 15:34 S100 EndoparasitEs EndoparasitEs of cases with spiro cercosis in Hungary between 2007 and 2016, and this this disease is prevalent at all times of year.

TL;DR: The liquid synthetic medium was compared with the nitrofurantoin broth and the solid one with cetrimide agar by parallel inoculation of 60 raw milk samples and 20 P. aeruginosa pure cultures to show high selectivity, high sensitivity and rapidity.
Abstract: Selective and differentiating media consisting of simple chemical components have been developed, both in solid and in liquid form, for culturing Pseudomonas aeruginosa from foodstuffs. These media work on the basic principle that Gram-negative bacteria can utilize ammonia as inorganic nitrogen source. This principle has already been utilized for developing a culture medium for coliform bacteria (Szita and Biro, 1986; Szita et al., 1988). P. aeruginosa can produce the ammonia needed for its growth by decomposing acetamide. The liquid synthetic medium was compared with the nitrofurantoin broth and the solid one with cetrimide agar by parallel inoculation of 60 raw milk samples and 20 P. aeruginosa pure cultures. The main advantages of the synthetic media are their high selectivity, high sensitivity and rapidity. Owing to their advantageous properties, the new media can be recommended for replacing cetrimide agar and nitrofurantoin broth.
