Abstract: The effects of alterations in regrouping, feeding and drinking practices were examined on a pig farm to improve animal welfare and productivity. Weaned at 35 days of age, 720 piglets were randomly assigned to 24 groups of 30 piglets in a factorial design with three factors. During the next 55 days they were regrouped once, twice or not regrouped at all, had nipple drinkers or a water trough and had 3, 6 or 10 cm trough length per animal and four meals a day or 3 cm trough length per animal and six daily meals. Simple factorial ANOVA revealed that the piglets grew very highly significantly (p < 0.001) faster if they were not regrouped, drank from water troughs and had sufficient trough length available, however, increased feeding frequency partially compensated for shorter trough length. Similar analysis of the ranges of body weights within groups showed similar, yet less significant effects in the opposite direction, i.e. where pigs grew faster there tended to be also less weight difference. It is concluded that avoidance of mixing and undisturbed, easy access to food and water is beneficial to both the welfare of the pigs as well as their productivity.

Abstract: Aim This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of yeast cell wall (YCW) supplementation on production performances and blood biochemical indices such as liver enzyme activities, energy metabolites, and electrolyte concentrations of dairy cows in different lactation periods (LP). Materials and Methods Thirty-two lactating Holstein cows were assigned into 2×2 factorial arrangement, in which the factors were the treatment (TM) (control [n=16] vs. YCW [n=16]) and the LP (early lactation [n=14] vs. mid-lactation [n=18]). The cows with day in milk (DIM) 120 (179±5 DIM) were assumed as mid-lactating cows. The YCW (SafMannan; Phileo, Lesaffre Animal Care, France) was used as the dietary supplement (10 g/cow/day) in this experiment. The statistical analysis of the data was performed by the two-way analysis of variance using the general linear model procedure to determine the main effects (TM and LP) and their interaction (TM×LP) on production performances and blood biochemical parameters of experimental cows. Results No significant effects (p>0.05) of YCW supplementation on production performances and blood biochemical indices of cows in TM groups (control vs. YCW) were observed; however, some obvious effects were detected in LP (early- and mid-lactation). Milk and milk component yield of cows in early lactation were significantly higher (p 0.05) with the YCW supplementation. The higher level (p<0.05) of serum albumin was found in mid-lactating cows after YCW supplementation. Before the experiment, the higher (p<0.05) non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and NEFA/total cholesterol (T-Cho) ratio, and the lower (p<0.05) calcium (Ca) concentration were observed in early lactating cows comparison with mid-lactating cows; however, there were not different after YCW supplementation. Conclusion The positive effects of YCW supplementation on milk and milk component yields, energy metabolite, especially NEFA and NEFA/T-Cho ratio and Ca concentration were observed in early lactating cows rather than mid-lactating cows.

Abstract: After a critical review ·of recent research on the whole body chemical composition of laboratory animals, especially that of the mouse, the authors pres­ ent data on the body composition of a mouse line of diflerent body condition score, varying from nonnal to double-muscled ("culard", "compact") type. One hundred male and 100 female mice of different compact categories were meas­ ured in vivo, using total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC method), then by direct chemical analysis perfonned on day 77 of life. In male mice, body weight and protein content were found to increase while fat content decreased parallel to the incn,ase in phenotypic condition score. Female mice showed a rather con­ stant fat, protein and ash content in the dry matter of the body. The precision and validity ofTOBEC data under 40 grams of body weight proved to be insufficient.

Abstract: Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting were used to identify and to compare the surface antigens of eight C. fetus subsp. fetus strains. Seven strains (one of serogroup A and six of serogroup B) were isolated from aborted ovine fetuses, while one strain (serogroup A) originated from an aborted calf fetus. Saline extracts at 56 degrees C and 100 degrees C were used as antigens. Antisera were produced in rabbits. In saline extracts (56 degrees C) of the strains at least 19 fractions were identified by SDS-PAGE, with molecular masses ranging from approx. 4,800 to 205,000. The major bands appeared at 205,000, 66,000, 31,500, 25,000, 21,000 and 17,500. Despite the fact that the strains were cultured from 4 different sheep flocks and belonged to serogroup A or B, the SDS-PAGE profiles of the strains were very similar. When boiled (100 degrees C) extracts were used, a band migrating at 32,500 in sheep strains and a band at 97,500 in the calf isolate were missing. Most of the bands obtained by SDS-PAGE could be identified also by the immunoblot procedure. A or B type specificity of the ovine isolates was due to an LPS fraction, migrating at approx. 21,000, while the other LPS fractions appearing under this region although reacted with antisera did not influence the type specificity. Using alkaline extracts (pH 12) in SDS-PAGE, LPS fractions gave more pronounced profiles. In two of our C. fetus subsp. fetus isolates, plasmids with a molecular mass of 31,500 were identified.
