Abstract: The interaction between Bordetella bronchiseptica and type D toxigenic pasteurella multocida was studied in five groups of 4 specific-pathogen-free (SPF) piglets each. At 28 days of age, piglets of groups 3 and 4 were inoculated into both nostrils with 108 colony-forming-units (CFU) of a non-dermonecrotic toxin (DNT)-producing, phase I strain of B. bronchiseptica. Piglets of groups 1 and 3 were treated intranasally with a sonic extract of the non-toxic strain of B. bronchiseptica and those of groups 2 and 4 with B. bronchiseptica DNT into the left nostril. Sonic extract and DNT treatment was started at 33 days of age and lasted for 5 days. Piglets of group 5 served as controls. At the age of 37 days piglets of all groups except group 5 were inoculated into both nostrils with 5 × 107 CFU of toxigenic P. multocida. At slaughter at 50 days of age, P. multocida was recovered from the left nasal cavity of 3 piglets of group 2 and all piglets of group 4. In piglets inoculated with B. bronchiseptica DNT the mucosal epithelial cells of the left nasal cavity showed loss of cilia, regressive lesions such as vacuolation, karyopycnosis and necrosis, hypertrophy of the epithelium, infiltration of the epithelium and submucosa by inflammatory cells, could also be seen. The results suggest that action of the B. bronchiseptica DNT on the nasal mucosa is a precondition of the growth of P. multocida in the nasal cavity. It appears that colonization by P. multocida presupposes presence of a mucosal injury inflicted by B. bronchiseptica DNT in itself without involvement of the other virulence factors.

Abstract: An experimental study was undertaken in dogs with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) intoxication to describe and follow the changes in the ultrasound appearance of the liver. Characteristic ultrasound features (enlarged liver, increased echogenicity with fine, tightly-packed echoes, and loss of echogenicity of the portal vein walls) were seen from day 2 of the experiment, culminating between days 2 and 7. Subsequently the liver gradually and almost completely regained its normal ultrasound appearance. Ultrasonographic findings corresponded to the severity of the clinicopathological parameters, and changed parallel with the results of liver biopsies. Histology of the biopsy samples revealed acute centrolobular lipid accumulation with necrobiosis and necrosis in the hepatocytes in the first stage of the disease. In the second stage, a secondary reparatory-inflammatory process and reparation in the interstitial tissue were seen. In some dogs, ill-defined hyperechoic foci were observed within the liver during the regenerative phase. Hepatic ultrasonography seems to be a reliable and relatively sensitive method for monitoring liver dystrophy with necrobiosis and lipid accumulation and to follow the course of steatosis in clinical cases. Ultrasound-guided biopsy can further improve the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography in liver dystrophy.

Abstract: In order to offer methods for assessing the protein quality of dog foods, eight commercial dry-type complete dog foods were analysed by in vitro chemical methods (crude protein, amino acid composition, in vitro pepsin digestibility) and rat growth trial (weight gain = WG, feed efficiency = FE, protein efficiency ratio = PER, net protein ratio = NPR, and net protein utilisation = NPU). Three individual samples were taken from each dog food and their homogenous mixture was used as an ingredient for the test diets fed to six rats per diet. All dog food samples were used as a single protein source in isonitrogenous (10% crude protein) and isoenergetic (ME = 14.9 MJ/kg) complete diets. Rat weight gains showed significant differences among most of the test diets as a consequence of the differences in protein quality of the dog food samples. The protein quality indices of the dog food products showed significant variations. The measured ranges of protein quality indices of the samples were as follows: WG = -5.4-21.4 g; FE = 0-0.25 g/g; PER = 0-2.54 g/g; NPR = 1.06-3.52 g/g; NPU = 19.93-65.93%. The limiting amino acid, the sum of essential amino acids and the chemical scores were calculated from gross amino acid composition. Tryptophan was the first limiting amino acids in all samples but one. Methionine was found to be the second limiting amino acid. The crude protein content of the samples showed no correlation with indices of protein quality, indicating that the declaration of crude protein is not a sufficient information to judge the protein quality of dog foods. The declaration of NPR, or NPU indices may be recommended for labelling the protein quality of premium-type dog foods.

Abstract: Summary During August and September 1995, 111 thermopilic campylobacters from stool samples of patients suffering from diarrhoea were cultured and examined. Biochemical characteristics, serological distribution and antibiotic susceptibility of the strains were examined and the age distribution of the patients affected was recorded. Most of the strains, i. e. 101 isolates (91 %) proved to be Campylobacter (C.) jejuni , whereas 10 strains (9%) were C. coli . On the basis of their heat-stable antigens, 66 strains (65.3 %) of C. jejuni could be assigned to 17 serogroups, of which serogroups 2 (15 strains, 14.8%) and 8 (10 strains, 9.9%) occurred most frequently. All isolates examined were susceptible to erythromycin whereas susceptibility to other antibiotics varied greatly. Children under five years of age (59 cases = 53.1%) were most frequently affected. During 1995, altogether 11976 human Campylobacter cases were recorded in Hungary which means a prevalence of 114/100000. The results suggest that the great majority of cases of Campylobacter diarrhoea is caused by C. jejuni strains while C. coli strains have much less significance. The serotype distribution of C. jejuni strains causing diarrhoea is very wide. If treatment is needed the best choice at present seems to be erythromycin.
