TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of the risk of fire or other unpredictable catastrophe on the optimal rotation period of a forest stand are investigated and it is shown that when fires occur in a time independent Poisson process, and cause total destruction, the policy effect of the fire risk is equivalent to adding a premium to the discount rate that would be operative in a risk-free environment.

TL;DR: An MOS ternary-logic family comprising a set of inverters, NOR gates, and NAND gates is proposed, and an implementation of the cyclic convolution is concluded, an application in which a significant advantage can be gained through the use of ternaries digital hardware.
Abstract: An MOS ternary-logic family comprising a set of inverters, NOR gates, and NAND gates is proposed. These gates are used to design basic ternary arithmetic and memory circuits. The circuits thus obtained are then used to synthesize complex ternary arithmetic circuits and shift registers. The ternary circuits developed are shown to have some significant advantages relative to other known ternary circuits; these include low power dissipation and reduced propagation delay and component count. For a given dynamic range, the complexity of the new ternary circuits is shown to be comparable to that of corresponding binary circuits. Nevertheless, the associated reduction in the wordlength in the case of the ternary circuits tends to alleviate to a large extent the pin limitation problem associated with VLSI implementation. The authors conclude with an implementation of the cyclic convolution, an application in which a significant advantage can be gained through the use of ternary digital hardware.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the Boltzmann equation can be solved globally in time under conditions that include the case of a finite volume of gas in an infinite vacuum when the mean free path of the gas is large enough.
Abstract: Solutions of the Boltzmann equation are proved to exist, globally in time, under conditions that include the case of a finite volume of gas in an infinite vacuum when the mean free path of the gas is large enough. It is also proved, as might be expected in this case, that the density of the gas at each point in space goes to zero as time goes to infinity.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the Weibull distribution for wind speed analysis in British Columbia coastal stations with the most nearly circular wind velocity patterns and the lowest proportions of calms.
Abstract: The derivation of the Weibull distribution from the bivariate normal distribution provides theoretical justification for its use in wind speed analysis if four conditions are met. These conditions are that the orthogonal components of horizontal wind velocity transformed by raising them to the power k/2 are normally distributed, have zero means, have equal variances, and are uncorrelated. These four conditions specify a circular normal distribution for the transformed wind velocity components. Real world wind velocity patterns, however, are seldom, if ever, circular normal. Instead, the effects of topography and frontal systems produce a different wind speed distribution from each direction. This helps explain why the Weibull distribution gives only an approximate fit to the observed wind speed frequency distribution. The fit, at seven British Columbia coastal stations, was best at those stations with the most nearly circular wind velocity patterns and the lowest proportions of calms. It is sugge...

TL;DR: The initiation of metamorphosis in Dendraster excentricus is controlled by a pheromone released by adult sand dollars, and extracts of whole adults and gonads were also able to induce metamorphotic.
Abstract: Competent larvae are induced to undergo metamorphosis by sand from a sand dollar bed or an aqueous extract of the sand. Gel permeation chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography of the extract yielded a 980-dalton peptide that will induce metamorphosis between 10(-6) and 10(-5) molar. Extracts of whole adults and gonads were also able to induce metamorphosis, and adults can condition substrates to induce metamorphosis. Therefore, the initiation of metamorphosis in Dendraster excentricus is controlled by a pheromone released by adult sand dollars.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an algorithm for modelling electromagnetic induction effects in a thin sheet at the surface of a uniform earth model using a layered earth model, which is developed in Fourier space in terms of the toroidal and poloidal transfer functions instead of with the Green's function approach.
Abstract: Summary. The algorithm of Dawson & Weaver for modelling electromagnetic induction effects in a thin sheet at the surface of a uniform earth is modified to permit the use of a layered earth model. The theory is developed in Fourier space in terms of the toroidal and poloidal transfer functions instead of with the Green's function approach which was used by Dawson & Weaver. The integral equation for the surface electric field and most of the integral formulae for the derived field components are the same as before, except for the inclusion of additional integral the kernel of which has to be calculated numerically with the aid of fast Hankel transforms. The accuracy of the results is tested by comparing solutions with those obtained from a related 2-D algorithm and finally an example of 3-D modelling is presented.

TL;DR: The results indicated that approximately 47% of the observed illusion magnitude can be attributed to the involvement of structural factors, a result consistent with other studies that have used different experimental techniques to explore the same issue.
Abstract: Several levels of visual information processing contribute to the formation of visual geometric illusions. The present experiment attempted to separate the relative contributions of structural (physiologically based) and strategy (cognitively based) mechanisms in the formation of the Muller-Lyer illusion. A novel experimental procedure that combined Cyclopean stimulus presentation and illusion decrement was employed. The results indicated that approximately 47% of the observed illusion magnitude can be attributed to the involvement of structural factors, a result consistent with other studies that have used different experimental techniques to explore the same issue.

TL;DR: Ribosomes derived from the sulfur-dependent archaebacteria are structurally distinct from those types found in ribosomes from eubacteria, eukaryotes, and other archaEBacteria, but each type also has additional independent structural features that are consistent with other molecular biological properties peculiar to these organisms.
Abstract: Ribosomes derived from the sulfur-dependent archaebacteria are structurally distinct from those types found in ribosomes from eubacteria, eukaryotes, and other archaebacteria. All four ribosome types share a common structural core, but each type also has additional independent structural features. In the smaller subunit derived from sulfur-dependent archaebacteria ("eocytes"), lobes, similar to those found at the base of the eukaryotic small subunits, and an archaebacterial bill, similar to those found on the smaller subunit of archaebacteria and eukaryotes, are present. On the larger subunit from sulfur-dependent archaebacteria, an eocytic lobe, eocytic gap, and eocytic bulge are present. These features, with the exception of the eocytic gap, are found in a slightly modified form on eukaryotic large subunits. These novel ribosomal properties are in general consistent with other molecular biological properties peculiar to these organisms.

TL;DR: Preliminary comparisons suggest a set of relationships between phases of the vocal fold vibratory cycle and laryngeal configuration, expressed in terms of contrasting systems of stricture, and support a number of predictions that have been made in the literature on phonatory mechanisms.
Abstract: This study's objective is to identify the vibratory phase characteristics and corresponding laryngeal configurations of a series of phonation types common in current phonetic usage. The phonation types examined are categorized auditorily following the articulatory framework established by Laver (1968, 1975, 1976, 1980), the general phonetic theory of Abercrombie (1967), and the systematic nomenclature for phonation types provided by Catford (1964). The primary phonation types in this taxonomy are compared laryngographically to determine their larynx waveform characteristics, based on the auditorily controlled performance of a single phonetically trained subject, and are described visually from laryngoscopic observation. This study is intended as a means of establishing a basis for further work in which a larger inventory of speakers of known background and a wider variety of possible phonatory combinations are examined. These preliminary comparisons suggest a set of relationships between phases of the vocal fold vibratory cycle and laryngeal configuration, expressed in terms of contrasting systems of stricture, and support a number of predictions that have been made in the literature on phonatory mechanisms.

Abstract: A method is described for the derivation of fault signatures for the detection of stuck-at faults in single-output combinational networks. These signatures consist of a set of values derived from the network. Any single stuck-at fault causes at least one value to change. The fault signatures developed are a generalization of syndrome testing. The technique is developed in the Rademacher-Walsh spectral domain but is easily implemented using conters and basic gates.
