TL;DR: In this article, the MARCS transformations of the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) were analyzed for different values of [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe] and showed how suitable colour combinations can easily discriminate between red giant branch and lower main sequence populations.
Abstract: After a pedagogical introduction to the main concepts of synthetic photometry, colours and bolometric corrections in the Johnson-Cousins, 2MASS, and HST-ACS/WFC3 photometric systems are generated from MARCS synthetic fluxes for various [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe] combinations, and virtually any value of reddening E(B-V) < 0.7. The successes and failures of model fluxes in reproducing the observed magnitudes are highlighted. Overall, extant synthetic fluxes predict quite realistic broad-band colours and bolometric corrections, especially at optical and longer wavelengths: further improvements of the predictions for the blue and ultraviolet spectral regions await the use of hydrodynamic models where the microturbulent velocity is not treated as a free parameter. We show how the morphology of the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) changes for different values of [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe]; in particular, how suitable colour combinations can easily discriminate between red giant branch and lower main sequence populations with different [alpha/Fe], due to the concomitant loops and swings in the CMD. We also provide computer programs to produce tables of synthetic bolometric corrections as well as routines to interpolate in them. These colour-Teff-metallicity relations may be used to convert isochrones for different chemical compositions to various bandpasses assuming observed reddening values, thus bypassing the standard assumption of a constant colour excess for stars of different spectral type. We also show how such an assumption can lead to significant systematic errors. The MARCS transformations presented in this study promise to provide important constraints on our understanding of the multiple stellar populations found in globular clusters (e.g., the colours of lower main sequence stars are predicted to depend strongly on [alpha/Fe]) and of those located towards/in the Galactic bulge.

TL;DR: In this article, a least-squares orbital solution using robust estimation yields orbital parameters of period yr, velocity amplitude m s 21, ecP p 6.9 K p 19 centricity, projected companion mass, and semimajor axis.
Abstract: High-precision radial velocity (RV) measurements spanning the years 1980.8‐2000.0 are presented for the nearby (3.22 pc) K2 V star e Eri. These data, which represent a combination of six independent data sets taken with four different telescopes, show convincing variations with a period of …7 yr. A least-squares orbital solution using robust estimation yields orbital parameters of period yr, velocity amplitude m s 21 , ecP p 6.9 K p 19 centricity , projected companion mass , and semimajor axis

TL;DR: Future work should be directed toward standardizing test conditions and thyroid endpoints and investigating causal links between thyroid changes and fish growth, reproduction, and development.
Abstract: Numerous environmentally relevant chemicals, including polychlorinated hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organochlorine pesticides, chlorinated paraffins, organophosphorous pesticides, carbamate pesticides, cyanide compounds, methyl bromide, phenols, ammonia, metals, acid loads, sex steroids, and pharmaceuticals, exert acute or chronic effects on the thyroid cascade in the approximately 40 teleost fish species tested to date. Thyroid endpoints, therefore, serve as biomarkers of exposure to environmental pollutants. However, the mechanisms underlying thyroid changes and their physiological consequences are poorly understood because the thyroid cascade may respond indirectly and it has considerable capacity to compensate for abuses that otherwise would disrupt thyroid hormone homeostasis. Indeed, a xenobiotic-induced change in fish thyroid function has yet to be conclusively causally linked to decreased fitness or survival. Other complications in interpretation arise from the diversity of test conditions employed and the often indiscriminate use of numerous thyroid endpoints. Future work should be directed toward standardizing test conditions and thyroid endpoints and investigating causal links between thyroid changes and fish growth, reproduction, and development. Development may be particularly susceptible to thyroid disruption, and thyroid endpoints appropriate for early life stages need to be applied.

TL;DR: In this study, a poplar R2R3 MYB transcription factor gene is identified that exhibits close sequence similarity to the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) PA regulator TRANSPARENT TESTA2 and that is coinduced with PA biosynthetic genes following mechanical wounding, M. medusae infection, and exposure to elevated ultraviolet B light.
Abstract: In poplar (Populus spp.), the major defense phenolics produced in leaves are the flavonoid-derived proanthocyanidins (PAs) and the salicin-based phenolic glycosides. Transcriptional activation of PA biosynthetic genes leading to PA accumulation in leaves occurs following herbivore damage and mechanical wounding as well as infection by the fungal biotroph Melampsora medusae. In this study, we have identified a poplar R2R3 MYB transcription factor gene, MYB134, that exhibits close sequence similarity to the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) PA regulator TRANSPARENT TESTA2 and that is coinduced with PA biosynthetic genes following mechanical wounding, M. medusae infection, and exposure to elevated ultraviolet B light. Overexpression of MYB134 in poplar resulted in transcriptional activation of the full PA biosynthetic pathway and a significant plant-wide increase in PA levels, and electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that recombinant MYB134 protein is able to bind to promoter regions of PA pathway genes. MYB134-overexpressing plants exhibited a concomitant reduction in phenolic glycoside concentrations and other minor alterations to levels of small phenylpropanoid metabolites. Our data provide insight into the regulatory mechanisms controlling stress-induced PA metabolism in poplar, and the identification of a regulator of stress-responsive PA biosynthesis constitutes a valuable tool for manipulating PA metabolism in poplar and investigating the biological functions of PAs in resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses.
