Abstract: The 9-dot problem is widely regarded as a difficult insight problem. The authors present a detailed information-processing model to explain its difficulty, based on maximization and progress-monitoring heuristics with lookahead. In Experiments 1 and 2, the model predicted performance for the 9-dot and related problems. Experiment 3 supported an extension of the model that accounts for insightful moves. Experiments 4 and 5 provided a critical test of model predictions versus those of previous accounts. On the basis of these findings, the authors claim that insight problem solving can be modeled within a means-ends analysis framework. Maximization and progress-monitoring heuristics are the source of problem difficulty, but also create the conditions necessary for insightful moves to be sought. Furthermore, they promote the discovery and retention of promising states that meet the progress-monitoring criterion and attenuate the problem space.

Abstract: Hexagonal-phase NaYF4/NaGdF4 core/shell nanocrystals were synthesized and investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) using tunable synchrotron radiation. Based on the ratio of the Y3+ 3d to Gd3+ 4d core level intensities at varying photoelectron kinetic energies, we conclude that Gd3+ resides predominantly at the surface of the nanocrystals, proving a core/shell structure. These nanocrystals show potential for use as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications and optical imaging.

Abstract: After a large subduction earthquake, crustal deformation continues to occur, with a complex pattern of evolution. This postseismic deformation is due primarily to viscoelastic relaxation of stresses induced by the earthquake rupture and continuing slip (afterslip) or relocking of different parts of the fault. When postseismic geodetic observations are used to study Earth's rheology and fault behaviour, it is commonly assumed that short-term (a few years) deformation near the rupture zone is caused mainly by afterslip, and that viscoelasticity is important only for longer-term deformation. However, it is difficult to test the validity of this assumption against conventional geodetic data. Here we show that new seafloor GPS (Global Positioning System) observations immediately after the great Tohoku-oki earthquake provide unambiguous evidence for the dominant role of viscoelastic relaxation in short-term postseismic deformation. These data reveal fast landward motion of the trench area, opposing the seaward motion of GPS sites on land. Using numerical models of transient viscoelastic mantle rheology, we demonstrate that the landward motion is a consequence of relaxation of stresses induced by the asymmetric rupture of the thrust earthquake, a process previously unknown because of the lack of near-field observations. Our findings indicate that previous models assuming an elastic Earth will have substantially overestimated afterslip downdip of the rupture zone, and underestimated afterslip updip of the rupture zone; our knowledge of fault friction based on these estimates therefore needs to be revised.

Abstract: Quantum circuits are time-dependent diagrams describing the process of quantum computation. Usually, a quantum algorithm must be mapped into a quantum circuit. Optimal synthesis of quantum circuits is intractable, and heuristic methods must be employed. With the use of heuristics, the optimality of circuits is no longer guaranteed. In this paper, we consider a local optimization technique based on templates to simplify and reduce the depth of nonoptimal quantum circuits. We present and analyze templates in the general case and provide particular details for the circuits composed of NOT, CNOT, and controlled-sqrt-of-NOT gates. We apply templates to optimize various common circuits implementing multiple control Toffoli gates and quantum Boolean arithmetic circuits. We also show how templates can be used to compact the number of levels of a quantum circuit. The runtime of our implementation is small, whereas the reduction in the number of quantum gates and number of levels is significant.
