TL;DR: In this paper, for a system of 512 Stockmayer particles with μ*2 = 3·0 and I* = 0·025 at ρ*= 0·822 and T* = 1·15, in a series of extensive simulations, in which the boundary conditions (spherical reaction field vs. lattice summation technique (LS)) have been varied in a systematic way.
Abstract: Recently a computer adapted theory suitable for evaluating the dielectric properties of polar systems has been proposed. It rests on the assumption that the system behaves like a macroscopic dielectric and that the modifications of dipolar interactions do not affect its dielectric constant. In the present paper these assumptions are tested, for a system of 512 Stockmayer particles with μ*2 = 3·0 and I* = 0·025 at ρ* = 0·822 and T* = 1·15, in a series of extensive simulations, in which the boundary conditions (spherical reaction field (RF) vs. lattice summation technique (LS)) have been varied in a systematic way. Within the limits of statistical accuracy all simulations give identical results for the static as well as for the frequency dependent dielectric constant, namely e(0) = 66 and a relaxation time of τD* ≃ 1·0 for the almost Debye-like behaviour of e(ω). For particle numbers of 256 and upward the system studied behaves like a macroscopic dielectric; the bulk dielectric constant is independent of N ...

TL;DR: This ecological catastrophy provides evidence that the affected community, considered to have achieved relative stability by developing a strategy effectively dampening the effect of physical oscillations, has a distinct tolerance limit to stress.
Abstract: . Over a period of two weeks in September, 1983 a high biomass macroepifauna community characteristic of a greater part of the Gulf of Trieste suffered mass mortality. The affected area is estimated to cover several hundred km2. Within 2–3 days all sponges and the brittle star Ophiothrix quinquemaculata, which together make up over 60 % of the community biomass, were dead. Benthic fish, mostly gobiids, were already affected on the first day and littered the bottom in great numbers. Concurrently the complete spectrum of macroinfauna species including (in order of emergence) holothurians, burrowing shrimp, echinoids, polychaetes, sipunculids and bivalves appeared on the sediment surface. Within one week sea stars and all remaining ophiurids had died. At this time hermit crabs were found lying dead next to their shells. Several anemones survived into the last week, although many showed signs of severe stress and lay on the surface with exposed pedal discs. Oxygen deficiency is the apparent immediate cause of this phenomenon and several possible factors leading to anoxic conditions in the Gulf are discussed. This ecological catastrophy provides evidence that the affected community, considered to have achieved relative stability by developing a strategy effectively dampening the effect of physical oscillations, has a distinct tolerance limit to stress. The Gulf of Trieste, among the most productive areas in the Mediterranean Sea, must be considered as sensitive; September is a particularly critical month.

TL;DR: A transcutaneous signal transmission system for an auditory prosthesis has been designed that can be used for several other stimulation purposes needing accurate control of stimulation parameters.
Abstract: A stable transcutaneous transmission of power and signal via two coupled coils with minimized dependence on the relative spacing of external and implanted coil is possible by employing "critical coupling" between implanted and external circuits. Optimizing coil geometries and preventing the RF output amplifier from saturating is necessary to approximately maintain critical coupling despite placement tolerances within a reasonable range. Based on these considerations a transcutaneous signal transmission system for an auditory prosthesis has been designed. This transmission system can also be used for several other stimulation purposes needing accurate control of stimulation parameters.

TL;DR: Following the administration of a single 0.1 mg/kg dose of vecuronium bromide, satisfactory conditions for tracheal intubation developed in 156 +/- 12 s (mean +/- SEM), and the clinical duration of the initial dose was 36 +/- 2 min.
Abstract: Following the administration of a single 0.1 mg/kg dose of vecuronium bromide, satisfactory conditions for tracheal intubation developed in 156 +/- 12 s (mean +/- SEM), and the clinical duration of the initial dose was 36 +/- 2 min. When the initial dose of vecuronium was administered in two increments, a 0.015 mg/kg "priming" dose, followed 6 min later by a 0.050 mg/kg "intubating" dose, intubation time decreased to 61 +/- 3 s and clinical duration to 21 +/- 1 min. The priming dose that had no unpleasant effect on premedicated, awake patients could be administered 3-4 min before, and the intubating dose 2 to 3 min after induction of anesthesia. With the described technique, comparable intubating conditions could be obtained just as rapidly with vecuronium as with succinylcholine chloride, without subjecting the patients to the side effects of and the complications occasionally encountered with succinylcholine. An added advantage of the use of a priming dose is that it will reveal undiagnosed, pathologic, or idiopathic increase of sensitivity to nondepolarizing muscle relaxants.

TL;DR: Comparison of M2 expression with the display of the 3‐fucosyl‐N‐acetyllactosamine determinant, the structure recognized by most of the anti‐myeloid monoclonal antibodies reported so far, shows that more AMLs are M2‐positive and the proportion of M1‐positive blast cells in individual AML samples is higher.
Abstract: The selectivity of a novel myelomonocytic cell surface antigen, designated M2, has been assessed in a series of 208 leukemias. The M2 antigen is defined by a monoclonal antibody (VIM-2) of the IgM class. Its expression within the normal hemopoietic system is restricted to myelomonocytic cells. Lymphocytes, erythrocytes, thrombocytes and their morphologically recognizable precursors are negative. Sixty of the 66 acute myeloblastic leukemias (= 91%) and 28 of the 30 myeloid blast crises of CML patients (= 93%) were M2-positive. As expected from our findings with normal myeloid cells, the myeloid cells found in stable phase of CML were also in all instances, M2-positive. Quite in contrast, lymphoid cells from patients with B-CLL, T-CLL, prolymphocytic leukemia, hairy-cell leukemia, lymphoblastic lymphoma, Sezary syndrome, from CML patients in lymphoid blast crisis and from the majority of patients with ALL, were completely M2-negative. Also negative were the blast cells of patients with acute megakaryoblastic leukemia and acute erythroleukemia. A direct comparison of M2 expression with the display of the 3-fucosyl-N-acetyllactosamine determinant, the structure recognized by most of the anti-myeloid monoclonal antibodies reported so far, shows that more AMLs are M2-positive and the proportion of M2-positive blast cells in individual AML samples is higher.

TL;DR: The fibrinolytic capacity is a useful parameter for determining the risk of recurrence in patients with venous thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism and it was concluded that the recurrence-rate was significantly lower in Patients with a post-occlusion ELT shorter than 60 min than in patientsWith an ELT longer than 60 minutes.
Abstract: The fibrinolytic capacity of 121 patients with a history of venous thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism was studied by venous occlusion technique, at earliest 3 months after the last thromboembolic episode. After discontinuation of oral anticoagulation treatment the clinical course of the patients was followed and new thromboembolic episodes were noted. During the observation period of 56 +/- 18.8 months 45 of 121 patients experienced recurrence of thrombosis. The recurrence-rate was significantly lower in patients with a post-occlusion ELT shorter than 60 min (4.8%/year) than in patients with an ELT longer than 60 min (10.3%/year). It is concluded that the fibrinolytic capacity is a useful parameter for determining the risk of recurrence in patients with venous thrombosis.

TL;DR: The observed patterns of epiphytic colonization are interpreted as the result of a complex, dynamically changing system of interactions both within the epip hytic community and between the epIPhytic community, the host plant, and it's environment.
Abstract: . Microbial colonization on the leaves of a shoot of the mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) DELILE was studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy. Methods of field ecology such as transect, random plot and stratified sampling survey were applied to the microbial niveau to gain both qualitative and quantitative information on the microbial assemblage. While macro-epiphytic growth was significantly greater on the outer leaf sides, microbial colonization density was significantly higher on the inner leaf sides, both on leaf surface and epiphyte surface. Diatoms colonized the surface of incrusting algae and epiphytic animals in significantly lower numbers than the Posidonia leaf surface and were absent on erect epiphytic algae. Bacterial densities on epiphyte surfaces even exceeded values of the corresponding leaf surfaces on algal thalli near the leaf tips and on old leaves. Diatoms reach highest mean density on mature leaves and close to the leaf tips, while bacteria reach their greatest density on the oldest leaf and closer to the leaf base. Diatom density in general increases with exposure time of plant surface, while greatest bacterial density was observed at 7–10 weeks exposure. Basal leaf parts on younger leaves were dominated by rod-shaped bacteria, while distal leaf parts and old leaves were dominated by small coccoid bacteria. Surfaces of epiphytic algae were always distinctly dominated by small coccoid bacteria, and edges of thalli attracted high microbial densities. Microbial biomass (calculated from cell volumes using standard conversion factors) amounts to 2.3 g dry weight m-2 in the Posidonia stand where the shoot was sampled. The observed patterns of epiphytic colonization are interpreted as the result of a complex, dynamically changing system of interactions both within the epiphytic community and between the epiphytic community, the host plant, and it's environment. A model of the organization of the epiphytic community on Posidonia leaves is presented. “Ultra-ecology” is a term introduced to denote a type of SEM research in the micro-environment which is analogous to in situ investigation in “macroscopic” ecological work.

TL;DR: In this article, Anderson and Wojcik enumerated important differences from Generative Phonology (henceforth GP) to Natural Phonological Analysis (NPA) and NGP, and answered those criticisms that have so far been answered only partially.
Abstract: Natural Phonology (henceforth NP), founded by Stampe (1969, cf. 1980), and not to be confused with Natural Generative Phonology (henceforth NGP, as in Vennemann 1972 and Hooper 1976) and other ‘natural’ and ‘concrete’ trends in process phonologies (as in Bruck et al. 1974, cf. §3·3), has been well expounded in Donegan & Stampe (1979b) and, in terms of its application to language acquisition, in Edwards & Shriberg (1983). Important differences from Generative Phonology (henceforth GP) have been enumerated by Wojcik (1981). It is not my intention to repeat these expositions, but rather to answer those criticisms that have so far been answered only partially, such as the objections to NP discussed in Anderson (1981), Dinnsen (1978), Dinnsen & Eckmann (1977, 1978), Drachman (1978, 1981), Dressler (1974a), Hellberg (1980), Kodzasov & Krivnova (1981: 145ff), Lass (1980, 1981).

Abstract: To study the interaction between the calcium antagonist diltiazem and digoxin, a randomized crossover trial under steady-state conditions was carried out in 24 healthy male subjects. Diltiazem with digoxin induced an average increase of steady-state plasma digoxin concentration and AUC over 48 hr of 22.4%. This is caused by the prolongation of elimination t1/2 from 36.2 +/- 11.2 to 44.5 +/- 11.5 hr (means +/- SD) and the impairment of total digoxin clearance, dropping from 146.6 +/- 37.9 to 107.9 +/- 18.4 ml/min. Average reduction in renal clearance (from 102.1 +/- 35.5 to 85.5 +/- 42.7 ml/min) was not statistically reproducible. Apparent volume of distribution was not relevantly altered. Diltiazem kinetics did not change significantly when digoxin was concurrently given.

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical study of orbits in the elliptic restricted three-body problem concerning the dependence of the critical orbits on the eccentricity of the primaries is presented, where the P-orbits are defined as being the separatrix between stable and unstable single periodic orbits.
Abstract: This is a numerical study of orbits in the elliptic restricted three-body problem concerning the dependence of the critical orbits on the eccentricity of the primaries. They are defined as being the separatrix between stable and unstable single periodic orbits. As our results are adapted to the existence of planetary orbits in double stars we concentrated first on the P-orbits (defined to surround both primaries). Due to the complexity of the elliptic problem there is no analytical approach possible. Using the results of some 300 integrated orbits for 103 to 3.103 periods of the primaries we established lower and upper bounds for the critical orbits for different values of the eccentricity.
