Abstract: When radiation is Compton-scattered the emerging beam is Doppler broadened because of the motion of the target electrons. An analysis of this broadened lineshape the Crompton profile, provides detailed information about the electron momentum distribution in the scatter. The technique is particularly sensitive to the behaviour of the slower moving outer electrons involved in bonding in condensed matter and can be used to test their quantum-mechanical description. The review begins with a brief survey of the historical development of the subject to within a decade of the present. The behaviour of quantum systems from a momentum viewpoint, is explained and the conditions under which the scattering experiment can be interpreted directly in terms of electron momentum density are discussed. The experimental techniques with gamma -rays, X-rays and electron beams are compared. Finally, recent results on insulators and conductors are surveyed and the extent to which they challenge conventional assumptions of band theory is critically reviewed.

Abstract: This review provides a detailed overview on the latest developments in the design and control of the interface in polymer based composite dielectrics for energy storage applications. The methods employed for interface design in composite systems are described for a variety of filler types and morphologies, along with novel approaches employed to build hierarchical interfaces for multi-scale control of properties. Efforts to achieve a close control of interfacial properties and geometry are then described, which includes the creation of either flexible or rigid polymer interfaces, the use of liquid crystals and developing ceramic and carbon-based interfaces with tailored electrical properties. The impact of the variety of interface structures on composite polarization and energy storage capability are described, along with an overview of existing models to understand the polarization mechanisms and quantitatively assess the potential benefits of different structures for energy storage. The applications and properties of such interface-controlled materials are then explored, along with an overview of existing challenges and practical limitations. Finally, a summary and future perspectives are provided to highlight future directions of research in this growing and important area.

Abstract: Many plants use day length as an environmental cue to ensure proper timing of the switch from vegetative to reproductive growth. Day-length sensing involves an interaction between the relative length of day and night, and endogenous rhythms that are controlled by the plant circadian clock. Thus, plants with defects in circadian regulation cannot properly regulate the timing of the floral transition. Here we describe the gene EARLY FLOWERING 4 (ELF4), which is involved in photoperiod perception and circadian regulation. ELF4 promotes clock accuracy and is required for sustained rhythms in the absence of daily light/dark cycles. elf4 mutants show attenuated expression of CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED 1 (CCA1), a gene that is thought to function as a central oscillator component. In addition, elf4 plants transiently show output rhythms with highly variable period lengths before becoming arrhythmic. Mutations in elf4 result in early flowering in non-inductive photoperiods, which is probably caused by elevated amounts of CONSTANS (CO), a gene that promotes floral induction.
