01 Jan 1978TL;DR: In this paper, a mathematical framework in terms of semigroups is developed which enables the generalisation of the finite-dimensional results to infinite dimensions, and which includes partial differential equations and delay equations as special cases.
Abstract: The paper considers some control problems for systems described on infinite-dimensional spaces. A mathematical framework in terms of semigroups is developed which enables the generalisation of the finite-dimensional results to infinite dimensions, and which includes partial differential equations and delay equations as special cases. After first surveying some finite-dimensional results, abstract dynamical systems are introduced and the systems theory concepts of stability, controllability, observabiity and the linear quadratic problem are analysed. Throughout the paper the abstract theory is applied to a number of examples to obtain specific results.

TL;DR: In this paper, a global numerical stability analysis of the periodic wake of a circular cylinder for Reynolds numbers between 140 and 300 is presented, showing that the two-dimensional wake becomes (absolutely) linearly unstable to three-dimensional perturbations at a critical Reynolds number of 1885±10.
Abstract: Results are reported from a highly accurate, global numerical stability analysis of the periodic wake of a circular cylinder for Reynolds numbers between 140 and 300 The analysis shows that the two-dimensional wake becomes (absolutely) linearly unstable to three-dimensional perturbations at a critical Reynolds number of 1885±10 The critical spanwise wavelength is 396 ± 002 diameters and the critical Floquet mode corresponds to a ‘Mode A’ instability At Reynolds number 259 the two-dimensional wake becomes linearly unstable to a second branch of modes with wavelength 0822 diameters at onset Stability spectra and corresponding neutral stability curves are presented for Reynolds numbers up to 300

TL;DR: The review will discuss the enzymes for lignin breakdown in fungi and bacteria, and the catabolic pathways for breakdown of the β-aryl ether, biphenyl and other components of lign in bacteria and fungi, and includes a bioinformatic analysis of the occurrence of known lignIn-degradation pathways in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
