TL;DR: A cutting plane algorithm is designed based on a partial characterization of the cut polytope and used to solve max-cut problems on graphs with up to 1,600 nodes.
Abstract: We study the problem of finding ground states of spin glasses with exterior magnetic field, and the problem of minimizing the number of vias holes on a printed circuit board, or contacts on a chip subject to pin preassignments and layer preferences. The former problem comes up in solid-state physics, and the latter in very-large-scale-integrated VLSI circuit design and in printed circuit board design. Both problems can be reduced to the max-cut problem in graphs. Based on a partial characterization of the cut polytope, we design a cutting plane algorithm and report on computational experience with it. Our method has been used to solve max-cut problems on graphs with up to 1,600 nodes.

01 Dec 1989TL;DR: The present paper departs from the original primarily in correcting claims made there about the point algebra, and in presenting some closely related results of van Beek [1989].
Abstract: This paper revises and expands upon a paper presented by two of the present authors at AAAI 1986 [Vilain & Kautz 1986]. As with the original, this revised document considers computational aspects of interval-based and point-based temporal representations. Computing the consequences of temporal assertions is shown to be computationally intractable in the interval-based representation, but not in the point-based one. However, a fragment of the interval language can be expressed using the point language and benefits from the tractability of the latter. The present paper departs from the original primarily in correcting claims made there about the point algebra, and in presenting some closely related results of van Beek [1989].

TL;DR: An extended visual cryptography scheme, for an access structure (ΓQual,ΓForb) on a set of n participants, is a technique to encode n images in such a way that when the authors stack together the transparencies associated to participants in any set X∈Qual they get the secret message with no trace of the original images, but any X∈Γ forb has no information on the shared image.

TL;DR: It is shown here that cyclic loading, as naturally occurring in long bones, produces a flow of liquids through canaliculi so great that it significantly increases the efficiency of the transport mechanism operating between blood supply and osteocytes.
Abstract: WE show here that cyclic loading, as naturally occurring in long bones, produces a flow of liquids through canaliculi. The magnitude of such a stress-induced flow is so great that it significantly increases the efficiency of the transport mechanism operating between blood supply and osteocytes.

TL;DR: The most highly optimized sulfur-porous carbon nanosphere composite, created using pore-formers to tailor shell porosity, exhibits excellent cycling performance and rate capability.
Abstract: Porous hollow carbon spheres with different tailored pore structures have been designed as conducting frameworks for lithium-sulfur battery cathode materials that exhibit stable cycling capacity. By deliberately creating shell porosity and utilizing the interior void volume of the carbon spheres, sufficient space for sulfur storage as well as electrolyte pathways is guaranteed. The effect of different approaches to develop shell porosity is examined and compared in this study. The most highly optimized sulfur-porous carbon nanosphere composite, created using pore-formers to tailor shell porosity, exhibits excellent cycling performance and rate capability. Sulfur is primarily confined in 4-5 nm mesopores in the carbon shell and inner lining of the shells, which is beneficial for enhancing charge transfer and accommodating volume expansion of sulfur during redox cycling. Little capacity degradation (∼0.1% /cycle) is observed over 100 cycles for the optimized material.
