Abstract: The influence of the social environment on lateralized behaviors has now been investigated across a wide variety of animal species. New evidence suggests that the social environment can modulate behavior. Currently, there is a paucity of data relating to how primates navigate their environmental space, and investigations that consider the naturalistic context of the individual are few and fragmented. Moreover, there are competing theories about whether only the right or rather both cerebral hemispheres are involved in the processing of social stimuli, especially in emotion processing. Here we provide the first report of lateralized social behaviors elicited by great apes. We employed a continuous focal animal sampling method to record the spontaneous interactions of a captive zoo-living colony of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and a biological family group of peer-reared western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). We specifically focused on which side of the body (i.e., front, rear, left, right) the focal individual preferred to keep conspecifics. Utilizing a newly developed quantitative corpus-coding scheme, analysis revealed both chimpanzees and gorillas demonstrated a significant group-level prefer- ence for focal individuals to keep conspecifics positioned to the front of them compared with behind them. More interestingly, both groups also manifested a population-level bias to keep conspecifics on their left side compared with their right side. Our findings suggest a social processing dominance of the right hemisphere for context-specific social environments. Results are discussed in light of the evolu- tionary adaptive value of social stimulus as a triggering factor for the manifestation of group-level lateralized behaviors.

Abstract: This study examined whether or not there is progressive loss of individual myocytes in established heart failure, accounting for the progressive left ventricular dysfunction; whether such loss is by necrosis or apoptosis; and whether such loss is more pronounced in ischaemic heart disease or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. Tissue for patients undergoing cardiac transplantation for clinical end-stage heart disease was used. The clinical diagnosis was not known to the observer at the time of analysis. Indices of potential myocyte loss were: detection of apoptotic nuclei in situ, using the TUNEL method, immunohistochemistry for CD120a, CD120b, CD95, perforin and granzyme B; binding of C9 complex; and lipofuscin deposition within macrophages. Interstitial macrophages and T cells and their relationship to myocyte loss were also examined. There is indeed low grade myocyte loss in chronic heart failure, but there was no difference between the disease groups; rather, there was marked patient-to-patient variation within each category. Thus in chronic heart failure myocyte loss does occur, and both necrosis and apoptosis contribute to this loss, irrespective of the underlying nature of the disease. Any mechanism which accounts for myocyte loss must be common to both conditions, rather than specific for a pre-operative diagnosis.

Abstract: Scrippsiella trifida Lewis, 1991 ex Head, 1996 is a nontoxic marine calciodinelloidean dinoflagellate whose resting cyst has a distinctive wall containing large, erect, trifurcate, recurving calcareous processes that separate two organic layers. We show that the organic wall layers of living Scrippsiella trifida cysts are resistant to acetolysis and can therefore potentially fossilize, and we report on abundant Scrippsiella trifida cysts from latest Pleistocene and early Holocene marine sediments off eastern Canada, representing the first confirmed fossil discovery of this species in the North Atlantic. A reappraisal of late Quaternary palynological records now shows that the organic remains of Scrippsiella trifida cysts have been widely misidentified as cysts of Alexandrium tamarense (Lebour, 1925) Balech, 1985, a goniodomacean (and hence noncalcareous) dinoflagellate and major cause of paralytic shellfish poisoning in humans. The morphology of these two cyst types is contrasted, and the modern and fossil distribution of Scrippsiella trifida cysts in sediments of the North Atlantic and adjacent areas is now clarified. It is apparent from this distribution that Scrippsiella trifida favors neritic environments characterized by cool winters and relatively warm (14°–25°C) summers. Extremely high fluxes of S. trifida cysts in nearshore areas off Nova Scotia and southern Greenland during deglaciation and early postglacial time (14–7 ka) have no modern analog but may signal a reduction in salinity caused by meltwater discharge. In general, the organic walls of calcareous dinoflagellate cysts are more common components of palynological assemblages than hitherto realized.

Abstract: Trichomonad species are widespread unicellular flagellated parasites of vertebrates which interact with their hosts through carbohydrate-lectin interactions. In the past, some data has been accumulated regarding their lipo(phospho)glycans, a major glycoconjugate on their cell surfaces; on the other hand, other than biosynthetic aspects, few details about their N-linked oligosaccharides are known. In this study, we present both mass spectrometric and HPLC data about the N-glycans of different strains of Trichomonas vaginalis, a parasite of the human reproductive tract. The major structure in all strains examined is a truncated oligomannose form (Man5GlcNAc2) with α1,2-mannose residues, compatible with a previous bioinformatic examination of the glycogenomic potential of T. vaginalis. In addition, dependent on the strain, N-glycans modified by pentose residues, phosphate or phosphoethanolamine and terminal N-acetyllactosamine (Galβ1,4GlcNAc) units were found. The modification of N-glycans by N-acetyllactosamine in at least some strains is shared with the lipo(phospho)glycan and may represent a further interaction partner for host galectins, thereby playing a role in binding of the parasite to host epithelia. On the other hand, the variation in glycosylation between strains may be the result of genetic diversity within this species.
