TL;DR: This paper explored the career strategies of 68 white women and BME legal professionals to understand more about their experiences in the profession and found that five of the six career strategies tend to reproduce rather than transform opportunity structures in the legal profession.
Abstract: The legal profession in England and Wales is becoming more diverse. However, while white women and black and minority ethnic (BME) individuals now enter the profession in larger numbers, inequalities remain. This article explores the career strategies of 68 white women and BME legal professionals to understand more about their experiences in the profession. Archer’s work on structure and agency informs the analysis, as does Emirbayer and Mische’s (1998) ‘temporally embedded’ conceptualization of agency as having past, current and future elements. We identify six career strategies, which relate to different career points. They are assimilation, compromise, playing the game, reforming the system, location/relocation and withdrawal. We find that five of the six strategies tend to reproduce rather than transform opportunity structures in the legal profession. The overall picture is one of structural reproduction (rather than transformation) of traditional organizational structure and practice. The theoretical frame and empirical data analysis presented in this article accounts for the rarity of structural reform and goes some way towards explaining why, even in contexts populated by highly skilled, knowledgeable agents and where organizations appear committed to equal opportunities, old opportunity structures and inequalities often endure.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present empirical evidence on how telecommunications infrastructure is related to economic growth in a panel dataset covering 44 African countries for the period from 1990 to 2010, which suggests that telecommunications contribute in a major way to the economic development of the continent.
Abstract: This paper presents empirical evidence on how telecommunications infrastructure is related to economic growth in a panel dataset covering 44 African countries for the period from 1990 to 2010. A dynamic panel data approach model is employed, which suggests that telecommunications contribute in a major way to the economic development of the continent, after controlling for a number of other factors. Furthermore, the findings also show that investment in telecommunications is subject to increasing returns, demonstrating that an increase in telecommunications investment produces further growth. Therefore, telecommunications investment and services should be encouraged in the region.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore how overseas visitors experience off-the-beaten-track areas and everyday life in London and find that these areas offer city visitors opportunities to create their own narratives and experiences of the city, and to build a cultural capital in a convivial relationship with other city users.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper aims to explore how overseas visitors experience off‐the‐beaten‐track areas and everyday life in London.Design/methodology/approach – Initially scoped through quantitative research using visitor surveys involving some 400 respondents, the study was subsequently developed through qualitative research: 49 semi‐structured interviews with visitors from a wide range of countries.Findings – These areas offer city visitors opportunities to create their own narratives and experiences of the city, and to build a cultural capital in a convivial relationship with other city users. At the same time, visitors contribute to the discovery of new areas for tourism ‐ and in some sense the creation of new places to visit.Research limitations/implications – Further research in other areas of London and in other world tourism cities is needed to develop ideas discussed here.Practical implications – Subtler forms of tourism marketing are required to develop the potential of areas like those discussed in t...

TL;DR: Molecular approaches in fruit cell wall interactions to regulate processes in fruit ripening in order to improve post-harvest textural characteristics are discussed.
Abstract: Fruit ripening is associated with cell wall modifications. The present review focuses on cell wall components and the nature of noncovalent and covalent interactions in the primary cell wall. The role of structural protein cross-links are evaluated within the context of cell wall-mediated changes in texture during fruit ripening. The article discusses molecular approaches in fruit cell wall interactions to regulate processes in fruit ripening in order to improve post-harvest textural characteristics.
