Abstract: It has recently been established that the radiative lifetime of the metastable $2^{3}S$ state of helium and the heliumlike ions is determined by single-photon magnetic dipole ($M1$) transitions to the ground state, rather than the two-photon process proposed by Breit and Teller. The theory of $nl\ensuremath{-}{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}l$ $M1$ transitions with $n\ensuremath{
e}{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ is developed in the Pauli approximation and extended to two-electron systems. Terms arising from relativistic energy corrections and finite-wavelength effects are included. The results for hydrogenic systems are shown to be identical to those obtained in the relativistic four-component Dirac formulation. The coefficients in the ${Z}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ perturbation expansion of the $1s2s^{3}S\ensuremath{-}1{s}^{2}^{1}S$ $M1$ transition integral are evaluated through ninth order and used to calculate the $M1$ emission probabilities from the $2^{3}S$ state of the two-electron ions up to Fe XXV. The emission probability for neutral helium is 1.27 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ ${\mathrm{sec}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The results are compared with recent solar coronal observations by Gabriel and Jordan, and with a measurement of the $2^{3}S$ state lifetime in Ar XVII by Schmieder and Marrus.

Abstract: 45 9- to 14-yr.-old right-handed boys (IQ range: 85 to 115) with learning disabilities were distributed into three groups on the basis of their WISC Verbal IQ and Performance IQ scores: the high performance-low verbal (HP-LV) group, the verbal equal to performance (V = P) group, and the high verbal-low performance (HV-LP) group. The three groups were equated for age and Full Scale IQ. The performance of these Ss on 25 measures indicated clear superiority of the HP-LV group on most measures of complex motor and psychomotor abilities, regardless of the hand employed. Although expectations involving differential hand superiority of the HP-LV and HV-LP groups were not supported, the results were considered consistent with the view that WISC VIQ-PIQ discrepancies reflect the differential integrity of the two cerebral hemispheres in older children with learning disabilities.

Abstract: The calculation of approximate wave functions describing autoionizing resonances is formulated in terms of Hylleraas-Scherr-Knight 1/ Z expansion perturbation theory The optimization of a screening parameter is discussed and it is shown that erroneous results may be obtained if the screening parameter is improperly chosen The solution is expanded in a finite, correlated basis set and results obtained for the 2s2p 1 P and 3 P resonances of the helium isoelectronic sequence The 1/ Z expansion method uniquely identifies which of the N roots arising from the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in an N dimensional basis set corresponds to a particular autoionizing state

Abstract: A method for measuring strain using diffraction of light from a single aperture is described, and results of a comparison tensile test with an electrical-resistance strain gage are presented. The “diffractographic strain gage” is shown to have high sensitivity, linearity, accuracy and temperature compensation and the ability to operate in a variety of hostile environments. It is furthermore simple, inexpensive, and the data can be collected by eye without assistance from further instrumentation.

Abstract: Ledges at, or somewhat above high tide level have been the subject of considerable controversy regarding the question of whether such ledges provide evidence of a former higher sea level. In the macro- tidal, storm wave environment of the Vale of Glamorgan, ledges are related to lithological controls, contemporary storm wave activity and changes in sea level. In the Liassic outcrops, analysis of the detailed lithology demonstrates that the ledges occupy the most favourable lithological locations. Therefore such ledges cannot simply be correlated on the basis of height with the level of a former sea. The form of the ledges appears to provide both evidence of former sea levels at about 5 m and 1-2 m above its present level, and also significant indi- cations of the potency of contemporary storm wave activity. It is considered that both greater appreciation of the influence of lithology on ledge formation, and the recognition of high intensity, low frequency storm wave attack, must precede the utilization of high-water rock ledges for the reconstruction of former sea levels.

Abstract: Portable Rod-and-frame Test (RFT) scores and the Jackson Personality Inventory (JPI) scale scores were obtained for 41 male and 41 female college students. Two partial RFT scores were computed: the summed deviations of RFT Trials 1 to 8 and RFT Trials 9 to 16. The results suggest that RFT performance of men and women is a function of different determinants and that, at least for men, performance on Trials 1 to 8 is a function of different determinants than performance on Trials 9 to 16. To explain a major portion of the variance of RFT performance an arousal interpretation appears useful for men and an interpretation in terms of energy level for women.

Abstract: The cross sections for the decay of circular and of linear polarization in oriented $4^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ potassium atoms, induced in collision with inert-gas atoms, were determined in a series of fluorescence experiments. A modified Zeeman scanning method was used to populate selectively the ${m}_{J}$ sublevels of the $^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ potassium atoms mixed with inert gases and placed in a strong magnetic field. Measurements of depolarization of the fluorescence, in relation to gas pressures, yielded the following depolarization cross sections: ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{1}$ (disorientation): K-He, 86 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$; K-Ne, 86 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$; K-Ar, 164 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$; K-Kr, 248 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$; K-Xe, 251 \AA{}. ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{2}$ (disalignment): K-He, 127 \AA{}; K-Ne, 120 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$; K-Ar, 240 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$, K-Kr, 301 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$, K-Xe, 336 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$. The experimental values are in satisfactory agreement with the calculations of Nikitin and Ovchinnikova.

Abstract: High-resolution thermoluminescence spectra for individual glow peaks, luminescence, and luminescence excitation spectra at liquid-nitrogen temperature are presented for the Ca${\mathrm{F}}_{2}$: ${\mathrm{Dy}}^{+3}$ system. A qualitative interpretation of the results is offered and discussed.

Abstract: Hippocampal lesions were found to affect a rat’s relearning a previously learned correct arm from a new starting position in a T-maze situation. Hippocampal-damaged rats (HIPP group) perseverated turning responses by entering into the opposite arm from the correct one more than did sham-operated rats (SHAM group). This perseveration phenomenon was seen only for HIPP rats that were required to choose between two similar choice arms. When side arms were differentiated by brightness cues, no differences in relearning the correct arm were found between groups. Greater resistance to extinction of the position habit was also found in HIPP rats, but only in the situation with both side arms similar in color.

Abstract: The adaptive response of peak-holding control systems is investigated using Liapunov's second stability method. The control loop is simplified by neglecting the dynamic elements associated with performance index measurement and a Liapunov function based on the plant and controller nonlinearities is derived. Stability criteria are obtained for the situation where control parameter bounds exist and for two different cases of variation of plant operating conditions (viz., drift and periodic disturbance of optimum operating point). Expeximental results are given that indicate the validity of the technique used, even in situations where the dynamic measurement elements present in the control loop cannot be neglected. The aim of the paper is to improve the understanding of the performance of peak-holding control systems, of the optimalizing type under time varying operating conditions and to present simple stability criteria that are directly applicable to the practical case.

Abstract: The optical spectrum exhibited by the ${\mathrm{Sm}}^{3+}$ ion in Ca${\mathrm{F}}_{2}$ is analyzed assuming both octahedral and trigonal site symmetries. Calculations were performed using a tensor operator technique in the complete intermediate-coupling scheme. The crystal field parameters and the root-mean-square (rms) deviations obtained are ${B}^{(4)}=\ensuremath{-}906$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and ${B}^{(6)}=618$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ with rms deviations of 48.1 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for the octahedral site symmetry; ${B}_{0}^{(2)}=118$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, ${B}_{0}^{(4)}=\ensuremath{-}272$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, ${B}_{3}^{(4)}=\ensuremath{-}296$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, ${B}_{0}^{(6)}=38$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, ${B}_{4}^{(6)}=\ensuremath{-}128$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, and ${B}_{6}^{(6)}=1556$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, with rms deviation of 35.4 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for the trigonal site symmetry. It is suggested that the sample on which the measurements were carried out contains ${\mathrm{Sm}}^{3+}$ ions occupying both octahedral and trigonal symmetry sites. It is also shown that crystal field theory with a single set of ${B}_{q}^{(k)}$ parameters is quite adequate to describe the energy levels lying below 11 000 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, above which a fairly large energy gap follows.

Results have been made absolute using the accurately known oscillator strengths. Maxima in the cross sections for the $n^{1}P$ levels occurred around 100 eV and were found to be 106\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}19}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ ($2^{1}P$), 31\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}19}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ ($3^{1}P$), and 13\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}19}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ ($4^{1}P$).

Abstract: Kincannon's ( 5 ) 71-item abbreviation of the MMPI (Mini-Mult) has been useful with chronic ( 6 ) and acute hospitalized psychiatric patients ( 7 ) , hospitalized medical patients ( 4 ) , as well as English-speaking college students.' Since no information was found concerning the development or use of short forms of any of the many translations of the MMPI ( 3 ) , the present study attempted to explore the value of the Mini-Mult in the assessment of 15 male and 21 female bilingual French-Canadian college students ( 8 ) who completed the standard French booklet form of the MMPI ( 1 ) in individual sessions. All answer sheets were hand-scored, and raw scores for the Mini-Mult were obtained by the use of special tables provided by Kincannon (6 ) . Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were computed between the following scales of the French Mini-Mult and the French full-scale MMPI: L, P, K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9. In contrast to previous research, the present investigation yielded significantly lower correlations on 5 scale comparisons for male Ss (L, K, 1, 2, 3) and 4 for females (P, 1, 2, 3 ) . In addition, the rs (-.07 to 3 9 , Mdn rs = .61, .56 respectively) were generally much lower than those reported in earlier studies (2 , 3 ) . In fact, some were negative. These findings, although in conflict with the unpublished positive results obtained by Hewitt and Trybus', are in line with the recommendations set forth by Chylinski and Wright ( 2 ) who have suggested caution in utilizing the MMPI with Canadian Ss until proper standardization is completed.

Laboratory observations were made to study the erosion of beds of gravel caused by water jets projected from spillway buckets. Flip buckets with 15, 30, 45 and 60 degrees exit angles were utilized. One-quarter inch and %-inch nominal size bed materials were used in the investigation. The gravel was placed in a large comprehensive scour basin to observe their behavior when subjected to the water jets.
Besides the formula derived for the maximum depth of scour, a set of dimensionless equations were developed to describe the three-dimensional configuration of scour holes. The dimensions of stable plunge basins could be obtained from these profiles.

Abstract: N-Bromosuccinimide has been employed as a reagent for the determination of glucose, galactose, and xylose. The reactions are carried out at room temperature for 15 minutes. The errors involved are legs than ± 6% at the mg level. The time required for a complete determination is 45 minutes and the only standard solution required is sodium thiosulfate.

Abstract: The current controversy surrounding the medical or illness model of disordered behavior has very largely neglected the area of psychological assessment and feedback. It was the aim of the present study to examine the acceptability of feedback statements derived from inventories based on pathology-oriented vs trait-descriptive personality constructs. 88 male and female students completed the MMPI and the PRF (Personality Research Form) in group sessions in a counterbalanced design. 5 wk. later all Ss ranked feedback statements from both of these instruments in the exact order that the statements were viewed as accurately descriptive of themselves. Pathology ratings of these feedback statements by 6 male and 6 female judges were also obtained. The results were: (1) MMPI feedbacks were judged as significantly more indicative of pathology than PRF feedbacks, and (2) Ss endorsed PRF feedbacks as significantly more self-descriptive than MMPI feedbacks.
