TL;DR: The power of the Young tableau scheme for labeling a complete spin-adapted basis set in the theory of complex spectra lies in one's ability to evaluate matrix elements of irreducible tensor operators directly in terms of the tableau labels and shapes.
Abstract: The power of the Young tableau scheme for labeling a complete spin-adapted basis set in the theory of complex spectra lies in one's ability to evaluate matrix elements of irreducible tensor operators directly in terms of the tableau labels and shapes. We show that the matrix-element rules stated by Harter for one-body operators can be easily derived from simple vector-coupling considerations. The graphical method of angular momentum analysis is used to derive closed-form expressions for the matrix elements of two-body operators. This study yields several interesting new relationships between spin-dependent operators and purely orbital operators.

TL;DR: Results indicated that there were some very accurate predictive measures of reading and spelling achievement levels over the 4-year age span studied, and that the relative accuracy of these measures differed markedly for normal and retarded readers.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the relative predictive accuracy of a number of measures employed in a 4-year longitudinal study of the neuropsychological abilities of normal and retarded readers. The results indicated that there were some very accurate predictive measures of reading and spelling achievement levels over the 4-year age span studied, and that the relative accuracy of these measures differed markedly for normal and retarded readers. Especially in the case of retarded readers, performance on the Underlining Test was a much more accurate predictor of eventual achievement levels in reading and spelling than were tests of reading, spelling, or psychometric intelligence.

TL;DR: In this article, a finite element method is presented for determining the buckling load of multiple-crossarm stayed columns, which is compared to an exact solution using stability functions, where applicable, from previously published results are compared and found to be in excellent agreement.
Abstract: The elastic buckling load of a metal column may be increased many times by reinforcing the column with rigidly connected crossarm members and prestressed stays. Such columns are referred to as stayed columns. A procedure based on the finite element method is presented for determining the buckling load of multiple-crossarm stayed columns. This method is compared to an exact solution using stability functions. The buckling loads from the two methods and, where applicable, from previously published results are compared and found to be in excellent agreement. Numerical examples are included which illustrate the increased load carrying capacity of stayed columns, the advantage of using stays with a high modulus of elasticity, and the importance of configuration on the buckling load.

TL;DR: It is concluded that it is very unlikely that the demasculinizing and/or feminizing effects of cannabis are due to simple estrogenlike action.
Abstract: Evidence is presented which indicates the lack of effect of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or cannabis resin on tritiated estradiol-17beta binding to uterine cytosol receptor. The cannabinoids which demasculinize when given in vivo had no estrogneic properties as assessed by receptor studies on 2 different rodent species. None of the major metabolites seems to have free hydroxyl or phenolic groups at both extremities of the molecule. It is concluded that it is very unlikely that the demasculinizing and/or feminizing effects of cannabis are due to simple estrogenlike action.

TL;DR: This paper discusses the application of the residue number system to realizing digital signal processing elements using such arrays and advantages and disadvantages over conventional realizations are discussed.
Abstract: In the past, hardware realization of digital signal processing elements have been based upon binary arithmetic concepts. Because of the dependence between digits in binary arithmetic operations, the hardware required to construct arithmetic elements is cumbersome. In the residue number system, arithmetic operations can be performed with complete independence between digits and a corresponding reduction in hardware complexity. In fact, using current technology, arithmetic operations can be carried out using arrays of look-up tables placed in high density ROMs. This paper discusses the application of the residue number system to realizing digital signal processing elements using such arrays and advantages and disadvantages over conventional realizations are discussed. Examples are given of recursive filter and FFT butterfly element realization.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the second-order, double-focusing mass spectrometer at the University of Manitoba ('Manitoba II') to determine the spacing of relatively narrow mass spectral doublets.
Abstract: In work reported previously, the 1 m radius, second-order, double-focusing mass spectrometer at the University of Manitoba ('Manitoba II') has been used to determine the spacing, ΔM, of relatively narrow mass spectral doublets (1/115 000 < ΔM/M < 1/17 000). In this work, involving relatively much wider doublets, we describe a systematic correction which must be applied to such determinations. We also report new values for the 37Cl – 35Cl mass difference and for two rare earth doublets which check the reliability of a large body of previous data.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a linear programming design technique for constant group delay filters with real and imaginary components of the frequency domain specifications, where the value of the group delay in the specifications is altered until a minimum error is achieved.
Abstract: Previous linear programming design techniques have concentrated on magnitude only specifications, In the technique presented here we design the filter to prescribed real and imaginary components of the frequency domain specifications. Although general phase characteristics have proved difficult to achieve, good results are obtained for constant group delay designs. The technique employed is to alter the value of the group delay in the specifications until a minimum error is achieved. Stable designs can be established by employing usual stability criteria. Results of the design technique are presented and an extension to two dimensional filter designs is discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the demand and supply concepts of residential mobility with regard to the housing multiplier generated by different locations and values of new homes, the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of households at various positions in the turnover process, the reasons for moving, and the spatial patterns of residential moves originating from new housing.
Abstract: Residential mobility is one of the most important forces underlying changes in the social composition and physical characteristics of urban areas (Rossi 1955, p. 2). Consequently, numerous studies on residential migration have been carried out in order to comprehend this process better and thereby aid in the assessment of migration theories and in the development of appropriate models. Mobility studies have examined the characteristics of outmigration areas and households, motivations to move, satisfaction achieved through relocation, and the impact of residential changes. However, as Maher (1974) points out, previous analyses are incomplete in that they tend to focus on the demand characteristics of residential relocation and to omit the supply side of the process, the available housing stock. This study attempts to rectify this omission by considering the provision of newly constructed single-family detached housing in Windsor and the resultant migration patterns and processes through vacancy chain analysis. The demand and supply concepts of residential mobility are examined with regard to the housing multiplier generated by different locations and values of new homes, the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of households at various positions in the turnover process, the reasons for moving, and the spatial patterns of residential moves originating from new housing. In addition, by focusing on a specific form of housing the study avoids problems which may arise from aggregate level analyses of households adjusting to new housing opportunities.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the rate of shear tensor always has an eigenvector with zero eigenvalue lying in the 2-space of Killing orbits.
Abstract: Spacetimes with axial and timelike Killing fields ημ and ξμ respectively are studied. A natural basis is constructed for the steady state configurations of matter with 4‐velocity uμ =αξμ+βημ. It is shown that the rate of shear tensor always has an eigenvector with zero eigenvalue lying in the 2‐space of Killing orbits. A natural coordinate system is constructed on the 2‐space of Killing orbits for rigidly rotating perfect matter. Gravitational isorotation is proved for the case of a perfect fluid with a one‐parameter equation of state. Locally nonrotating frames are constructed for purely stationary spacetimes.

Abstract: Let X and Y be two jointly distributed real valued random variables, and let the conditional distribution of X given Y be either in a Lebesgue exponential family or in a discrete exponential family. Let rk be the k-th order regression curve of Y on X. Let X n=(X 1,..., Xn) be a random sample of size n on X. For a subset S of the real line R, statistics $$\hat r_k $$ based on Xn are exhibited and sufficient conditions are given under which $$\mathop {\sup }\limits_{x \in S} |\hat r_k (x) - r_k (x)|$$ is close to O(n −1/2) with probability one. To obtain this result, with uf (u known and f unknown) denoting the unconditional (on y) density of X, the problem of estimating r k (·) is reduced to the one of estimating f (k) (·)/f(·) if the density is wrt the Lebesgue measure on R and f (k) is the k-th order derivative of f; and to the one of estimating f(·+k)/f(·) if the density is wrt the counting measure on a countable subset of R.

TL;DR: The role socialization of Canadian legislators is studied in this article, where the authors examine the processes by which incumbents acquire a set of values, skills, loyalties and cognitive maps.
Abstract: IntroductionAt present, little is known about the role socialization of Canadian legislators, that is, the processes by which incumbents of legislative positions acquire “a set of values, skills, loyalties and cognitive maps.” Defined in this way, legislative role socialization involves not only the acquisition of role orientations in the narrow sense of “a pattern of norms making up a particular role,” but also the development of the total set of cognitions and evaluations which, in their entirety, constitute a legislator's image of his job. To the extent that existing research is relevant for understanding the development of these job images, the normal procedure has been simply to examine relationships between narrowly defined role orientation variables (for example, representational role style or focus) and a set of socio-demographic and political characteristics the potential theoretical significance of which is often left unarticulated. Not surprisingly, these inquiries have shed little light on the role socialization of Canadian legislators.
