TL;DR: In this paper, a Markov process is used to solve a sequence of uni-phase systems with appropriate initial conditions, and a method of solution is presented and illustrated by examples.
Abstract: A quantitative reliability model for a phased mission system is developed using a Markov process. Two cases for the mission-phase change times are assumed: 1) to be known in advance and 2) to be random variables. A method of solution is presented and illustrated by examples. The solution of phased-mission systems is equivalent to solving a sequence of uni-phase systems with appropriate initial conditions.

TL;DR: Content analysis of 103 newspaper reports taken from eight major Canadian newspapers indicated that the newspapers portrayed mental illness and the mentally ill in a manner which could be described as essentially pejorative, thus seeming to support frequent observations and complaints from the mental health establishment about inadequate or unfair coverage of mental illness in the popular print media.
Abstract: The present article reports results from a content analysis of 103 newspaper reports taken from eight major Canadian newspapers, and selected at random from the Canadian Newspaper Index. The portrayal of mental illness and mentally ill persons in these reports was compared with that in samples of articles taken from two comparison mental health publications not receiving popular circulation. As compared with these latter publications, the content analysis indicated that the newspapers portrayed mental illness and the mentally ill in a manner which could be described as essentially pejorative, thus seeming to support frequent observations and complaints from the mental health establishment about inadequate or unfair coverage of mental illness in the popular print media. At the same time, the newspaper medium appeared to present more favourable images of nontraditional (example: community-based) mental health practices, than of traditional (example: hospital-based) practices. Implications of such results for the attitudes and beliefs of the general public vis-a-vis mental illness are offered, with special reference to the influence of the print media.

TL;DR: Differences in mother‐child interaction, child personality, and family characteristics between adolescents who were coping with chronic benign intractable pain and teenagers who were not are consistent with clinical impressions that parental behaviour interacts with child coping.
Abstract: The study investigated differences in mother-child interaction, child personality, and family characteristics between adolescents who were coping with chronic benign intractable pain and adolescents who were not. Both groups experienced a similar amount and intensity of pain. Behavioural observations indicated that non-copers engaged in significantly more negative behaviour than the copers. In addition, non-copers tended to express more pain and were on-task less often than the copers. Mothers of non-copers more frequently discouraged coping behaviour. No differences between the two groups were evident on the family or personality measures. The data are consistent with clinical impressions that parental behaviour interacts with child coping.

TL;DR: A theoretical study of the two-photon emission rate from the 1s2s S state of two-electron ions is presented and high-precision values of the nonrelativistic emission rate for ions with nuclear charge Z up to 36 are obtained by use of correlated variational wave functions of the Hylleraas type.
Abstract: A theoretical study of the two-photon emission rate from the 1s2s ${\mathrm{}}^{1}$S state of two-electron ions is presented. High-precision values of the nonrelativistic emission rate for ions with nuclear charge Z up to 36 are obtained by use of correlated variational wave functions of the Hylleraas type. Summations over intermediate states are performed by finite-basis-set methods. The results are used to obtain an accurate extrapolation formula and to study the convergence characteristics of a 1/Z expansion for the decay rate. The leading hydrogenic term is calculated to an accuracy which substantially exceeds Klarsfeld's, and the next term is obtained for what is believed to be the first time. Relativistic effects are taken into account by means of a screened hydrogenic approximation. The predicted decay rate for two-electron ${\mathrm{Kr}}^{34+}$ is (2.993\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.012)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{10}$ ${\mathrm{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, where the error is the uncertainty in the relativistic correction. This lies significantly higher than the value (2.934\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.030)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{10}$ ${\mathrm{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ recently measured by Marrus et al.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used mass balance techniques for natural oxygen-18 and several chemical parameters (electrical conductivity, Ca and Mg) to estimate the magnitude and timing of old water contributions to snowmelt runoff in the Apex River watershed during the 1983 field season.
Abstract: ‘Old’ water contributions to snowmelt runoff in a stream can be defined as water which was stored in the catchment prior to the start of the runoff event in question We used mass balance techniques for natural oxygen-18 and several chemical parameters (electrical conductivity, Ca and Mg) to estimate the magnitude and timing of ‘old’ water contributions to snowmelt runoff in the Apex River watershed during the 1983 field season The Apex River catchment is located in the southern part of Baffin Island, Northwest Territories, Canada The watershed has an area of 60 km2, it is in the zone of continuous permafrost, and the geology is dominantly Precambrian gneiss with sporadic, thin, glacial overburden The isotopic data indicate that for the snowmelt season of 1983 (third highest peak discharge of 11 years of record), approximately 50 per cent of the peak stream discharge consisted of ‘old’ water Our data also suggest that about 60 per cent of the entire 1983 hydrograph was ‘old’ water The chemical parameters give old water contributions which are at least 10 per cent less than the isotopically-derived estimate, but they are consistent with the isotopic estimate during peak flow

TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of polymeric insulating materials for outdoor insulation -high temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) and epoxy resins with a commonly used inorganic filler, alumina trihydrate, under salt-fog conditions is investigated.
Abstract: This paper describes the performance of the widely used polymeric insulating materials for outdoor insulation - high temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) and epoxy resins with a commonly used inorganic filler, alumina trihydrate, under salt-fog conditions. The role of the filler and the effect of the filler concentration in imparting track resistance to the materials is investigated. Various methods to describe the surface aging of polymer materials such as the peak and the average of the leakage current, the cumulative charge, the weight loss and the flashover voltage have been investigated. The results show that at moderate concentrations of filler, 105 to 130 parts per hundred (pph) of polymer, there is little difference in the performance of silicone rubber and EPR materials. At low concentrations of filler (30 pph), the EPR samples track whereas the silicone rubber samples erode. The epoxy materials exhibit inferior properties when compared to silicone rubber and EPR. The results also indicate that monitoring the weight loss, the reduction of the flashover voltage, and the peak of the leakage current are better methods to characterize aging of insulators than the average of the leakage current or the cumulative charge.

TL;DR: In a multiple regression analysis, none of the personality measures correlated significantly with body-image distortion; however, sex of subject accounted for 25% of its variance, and body dissatisfaction was significantly associated with low self-esteem, externality, depression, and distortion.
Abstract: The present study investigated body-image distortion and body-image dissatisfaction for a sample of 75 male and 75 female university students, in relation to personality variables implicated in the literature, such as sex-role orientation, self-esteem, locus of control, and depression. Women perceived their weight deviation from the norm at over 15% above their actual deviation, whereas men distorted less than 1%. In a multiple regression analysis, none of the personality measures correlated significantly with body-image distortion; however, sex of subject accounted for 25% of its variance. Body dissatisfaction was significantly associated with low self-esteem, externality, depression, and distortion. The relationship between body-image distortion and dissatisfaction, although significant, was surprisingly small. Apparently, these two aspects of body-image disturbance represent quite distinct constructs.

TL;DR: In this article, a VUV polarisation analyser is employed in an electron-polarized-photon coincidence experiment to determine circular/linear polarisation correlations from the differential electron impact excitation of the 21P state of helium.
Abstract: A VUV polarisation analyser is employed in an electron-polarised-photon coincidence experiment to determine circular/linear polarisation correlations from the differential electron impact excitation of the 21P state of helium. Circular polarisation correlations are presented for electron scattering angles in the range of 20-90 degrees and incident electron energies of 50, 60 and 80 eV. The sign of the orientation of the excited state was unambiguously determined in each case, thus resolving uncertainties which excited prior to this work.

TL;DR: The hydrogen site occupancy model for AB2-type Laves phases is based on enthalpy predictions of imaginary binary hidrides surrounding a particular tetrahedral interstice.
Abstract: Some of the shortcomings of the hydrogen site occupancy model for AB2-type Laves phases are demonstrated. The site occupancy model is based on enthalpy predictions of imaginary binary hidrides surrounding a particular tetrahedral interstice. However, it is shown that calculated enthalpies can be altered to yield virtually any desired, predicted occupancies and hence good agreement with evperimental data. Also, the model neglects other stability contributions and therefore does not present a true physical picture of hydrogen sorption in Laves phases.

TL;DR: The notions of reduced objective function and improving and feasible directions are used and the properties of the underlying optimization problem are explored to explore the conjecture that two sets of conditions are necessary and sufficient for a local minimum point.
Abstract: The convergence of the fuzzy ISODATA clustering algorithm was proved by Bezdek [3]. Two sets of conditions were derived and it was conjectured that they are necessary and sufficient for a local minimum point. In this paper, we address this conjecture and explore the properties of the underlying optimization problem. The notions of reduced objective function and improving and feasible directions are used to examine this conjecture. Finally, based on the derived properties of the problem, a new stopping criterion for the fuzzy ISODATA algorithm is proposed.

TL;DR: Recently, the Quadratic Residue Number System (QRNS) has been introduced as mentioned in this paper, which allows the multiplication of complex integers with two real multiplications, and the restriction is that this special residue number system has all moduli with prime factors of the form 4 k + 1.
Abstract: Recently, the Quadratic Residue Number System ,(QRNS) has been introduced [5], [6], which allows the multiplication of complex integers with two real multiplications. The restriction is that this special residue number system has all moduli with prime factors of the form 4 k + 1 . If an increase in real multiplications from two to three can be tolerated, the restriction can be lifted to allow moduli of any form.

TL;DR: The eye-movements of nine aphasic and nine nonaphasic control patients were recorded while they were looking at slides, containing eight words, selected from four different linguistic categories (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs).
Abstract: The eye-movements of nine aphasic and nine nonaphasic control patients were recorded while they were looking at slides, containing eight words, selected from four different linguistic categories (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs). The task was to construct a 4-word sentence. The aphasic patients produced fewer syntactically and semantically correct sentences. Both aphasics and controls used more nouns than adverbs in their sentences. The eye-movement patterns revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of fixation time per word category or in terms of fixation time per visual hemispace. Implications for a linguistic theory of sentence processing are discussed.

TL;DR: The onset of light saturation of both growth and photosynthesis of F. crotonensis occurred at fairly low irradiances, suggesting that it is adaptable to a low light eurythermal regime.
Abstract: An axenic clone of Fragilaria crotonensis was isolated from Lake Erie to quantitatively measure its growth and photosynthetic rates under different light and temperature regimes in the laboratory. Maximum growth (0.54 doublings day−1) and photosynthetic (3.7 mg C 10−9 cells h−1) rates were highest at 23 and 17°C and decreased with decreasing temperature (i.e. 11 and 5°C). Even though temperatures of 11 and 5°C are suboptimal for growth of F. crotonensis, they still resulted in 68 and 31%, respectively, of maximum growth rates at 23 and 17°C. Field data show that the F. crotonensis population in Pigeon Bay withstands an annual temperature variation of greater than 20°C and that at 5°c it achieves densities as high as 25% of maximum summer density. These laboratory and field data give strong support that F. crotonensis is eurythermal. The onset of light saturation of both growth and photosynthesis of F. crotonensis occurred at fairly low irradiances, suggesting that it is adaptable to a low light e...

TL;DR: Mesostoma may be an important agent in structuring pond zooplankton communities in the arctic, producing a shift in dominance away from cladocerans such as Daphnia toward larger calanoid copepods.
Abstract: The rhabdocoel Mesostoma lingua is a common inhabitant of rock bluff ponds in the area of Churchill, Manitoba. Unlike most flatworms it has the ability to prey actively on zooplankton. Among the zooplankton, Mesostoma prefers Daphnia pulex, Simocephalus vetulus, and Diaptomus tyrrelli. Larger calanoid copepods are difficult to capture and take much longer to consume. Growth in Mesostoma is maintained when individuals consume 0.5 Daphnia day−1 and is maximal at 4 Daphnia day−1. In comparison, Mesostoma maintained growth only when offered the copepod Diaptomus victoriaensis at the rate of 8–10 individuals-day−1. Mesostoma may be an important agent in structuring pond zooplankton communities in the arctic, producing a shift in dominance away from cladocerans such as Daphnia toward larger calanoid copepods.

Abstract: Silver island films are shown to be stable under normal laboratory conditions, and easy to use as optical sensors for the detection of traces of tetrasulphonated copper phthalocyanine. The surface-enhanced Raman (SER) effect is used in conjunction with a resonance Raman (RR) increase in the analytical signal to levels that allow the detection of nanogram amounts. The relative intensities of characteristic group frequencies do not seem to be altered by the SER enhancement mechanism.

TL;DR: In this article, the hydrogen storage compounds Zr(Fe x Cr 1−x ) 2 were examined in terms of hydrogen capacities, electron concentrations and heats of formation. And the effects of charge transfer effects were demonstrated by expanding Pauling's simple bond distance equation.
Abstract: The hydrogen storage compounds Zr(Fe x Cr 1− x ) 2 are examined in terms of hydrogen capacities, electron concentrations and heats of formation. Electronic effects are demonstrated by expanding Pauling's simple bond distance equation. Alloy heats of formation are evaluated based on Miedema's model of binary alloy formation, while hydride stabilities are calculated using the so-called “rule of reversed stability.” Alloy stabilities are shown to increase, while hydride stabilities decrease, with increasing iron substitution. This is directly related to charge transfer effects, as charge transfer away from zirconium becomes more prevalent at higher iron concentrations.
