TL;DR: The suitability of dispersing an ionic transition metal complex into an elastomeric matrix for intrinsically stretchable light-emitting devices to new applications in conformable lighting that require uniform, diffuse light emission over large areas is demonstrated.
Abstract: Remarkable progress in stretchable electronics over the past few years has produced some amazing devices: Devices that can be laminated onto skin, [ 1 ] hemispherical arrays of photodetectors that mimic the human retina, [ 2 ] and arrays of light-emitting devices for use in fldisplays [ 3 ] are just a few examples. The methodology used to impart stretchability connects rigid circuit elements with stretchable conductive interconnects that absorb applied strain. [ 4 ] A different approach to stretchability is now emerging, in which the devices themselves are fabricated to be intrinsically stretchable. Here, we describe the use of a stretchable electroluminescent material to produce a light-emitting device that exhibits intrinsic stretchability at room temperature. These devices are well-suited to new applications in stretchable and conformable lighting that require uniform, diffuse light emission over large areas. We demonstrate devices with large emission areas ( ∼ 20‐175 mm 2 ) that tolerate linear strains up to 27% and repetitive cycles of 15% strain with minimal performance degradation relative to devices fabricated using a conventional electroluminescent material. There are few examples of intrinsically stretchable devices‐ that is, systems in which the device itself operates under tensile strain. The two strategies that have been used to impart stretchability to these devices are identical to those used to fabricate stretchable device interconnects: Device materials can be either dispersed into an elastomeric matrix or deposited onto a prestretched elastomeric substrate. Kaltenbrunner et al. used the fi rst strategy to produce a stretchable battery of gel materials encased in an elastomer that can withstand uniaxial strains up

TL;DR: A fault-diagnostic scheme that can achieve single fault isolation and estimation for a three-cell battery string subject to uncertainties, and the synthesized design of Luenberger observers and LOs can realize simultaneous fault isolate and estimation.
Abstract: Lithium-ion batteries possess high power, energy, and long cycle life. They are best candidates for applications on hybrid and electric vehicles. To ensure reliable operation, one of the functions in a battery management system is health monitoring in terms of fault diagnosis and estimation. The purpose of this brief is to provide a fault-diagnostic scheme that can achieve single fault isolation and estimation for a three-cell battery string subject to uncertainties. Detecting and isolating faults in systems subject to uncertainties is a challenging task due to the difficulty in distinguishing the effects of faults from uncertainties. To facilitate fault isolation, a bank of systems, each corresponding to a particular fault, are formulated by reorganizing the considered system. Each system in the bank is first transformed into two subsystems. Then, a classical Luenberger observer is designed for the first subsystem to generate a fault-detection residual. In this manner, a bank of reduced-order Luenberger observers are designed to locate a specific fault source, and thus fault isolation is achieved. Parallel to the bank of reduced-order Luenberger observers, a bank of learning observers (LOs) are also constructed to provide an estimate of the isolated fault. As a result, the synthesized design of Luenberger observers and LOs can realize simultaneous fault isolation and estimation. Parameters of an A123 battery cell are extracted via experiments, and effectiveness of the proposed design is demonstrated through simulation studies on the model of a three-cell battery string.

TL;DR: In this paper, the trophic level differences in chemical accumulation in the food web could not be attributed to bioconcentration into increasing trophoric levels with increasing lipid levels, as no relationship was observed between trophicity position and lipid content of organisms.
Abstract: Trophic transfer of chlorinated organic contaminants was investigated in an aquatic community composed of zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, and fish. Biomagnification, measured as the increase in lipid-based chemical concentrations in predator over that in prey, was observed for high-K[sub OW] chemicals (log K[sub OW] > 6.3). Low-K[sub OW] chemicals (log K[sub OW] < 5.5) did not biomagnify in the food web, and chemicals with log K[sub OW] between 5.5 and 6.3 showed some evidence of biomagnification. Trophic level differences in chemical accumulation in the food web could not be attributed to bioconcentration into increasing trophic levels with increasing lipid levels, as no relationship was observed between trophic position and lipid content of organisms. Plots of contaminant-ordinated principal component scores in component space predicted the detailed diets of the species examined. It is concluded that (1) trophic interactions play a crucial role in the distribution of high-K[sub OW] chemicals but not for low-K[sub OW] chemicals and that (2) contaminant distributions provide a means to determine structure in aquatic communities.

TL;DR: Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce the location estimation error and provide accuracy improvement over existing methods.
Abstract: Location positioning systems using wireless area local network (WLAN) infrastructure are considered cost effective and practical solutions for indoor location tracking and estimation. However, accuracy deterioration due to environmental factors and the need for manual offline calibration limit the application of these systems. In this paper, a new method based on differential operation access points is proposed to eliminate the adverse effects of environmental factors on location estimation. The proposed method is developed based on the operation of conventional differential amplifiers where noise and interference are eliminated through a differential operation. A pair of properly positioned access points is used as a differential node to eliminate the undesired effects of environmental factors. As a result the strength of received signals, which is used to determine the location of a user, remains relatively stable and supports accurate positioning. To estimate wave propagation in indoor environments, log-distance path loss model has been employed at the system level. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce the location estimation error and provide accuracy improvement over existing methods.
