TL;DR: Metal-organic framework materials have been prepared that contain a mechanically interlocked molecule (MIM) as the pillaring strut between two periodic Zn-carboxylate layers, demonstrating, for the first time, that the dynamics of a MIM inside a solid material can be controlled by a reversible phase change.
Abstract: Metal–organic framework (MOF) materials have been prepared that contain a mechanically interlocked molecule (MIM) as the pillaring strut between two periodic Zn-carboxylate layers. The MIM linker is a [2]rotaxane with a [24]crown-6 (24C6) macrocycle and an aniline-based axle with terminal pyridine donor groups. The single-crystal X-ray structures of MOFs UWDM-2 (1,4-diazophenyl-dicarboxylate) and UWDM-3 (1,4-biphenyl-dicarboxylate) show that both frameworks are large enough to contain the free volume required for rotation of the interlocked 24C6 macrocycle, but the frameworks are interpenetrated (UWDM-2, three-fold, and UWDM-3, two-fold). In particular, for UWDM-3 the 24C6 rings of the pillaring MIM are positioned directly inside the square openings of neighboring zinc dicarboxylate layers. Variable-temperature (VT) 2H SSNMR demonstrated that the 24C6 macrocycles in UWDM-2 and UWDM-3 can only undergo restricted motions related to ring flexibility or partial rotation but are incapable of undergoing free ro...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the composition of fluid inclusions using a crush-leach technique and found that the main ore fluid at Tynagh and Silvermines was seawater that had evaporated until the salinity was between 12 and 18 wt percent.
Abstract: The numerous Zn-Pb deposits in the Irish midlands, together with the quantity and grade of the ore, make this a world-class base metal province. Despite significant exploration and research, there is still disagreement on the origin of the mineralizing fluids. In this study, we have measured the composition of fluid inclusions using a crush-leach technique. These data constrain the possible sources of the fluids both during and after mineralization. Chloride and Br concentrations indicate that the main ore fluid at Tynagh and Silvermines was seawater that had evaporated until the salinity was between 12 and 18 wt percent. However, Na, K, and Li data show that water-rock interactions have resulted in the depletion of Na and the enrichment of K and Li relative to the concentrations expected for evaporated seawater. The fluids that produced postore dolomitization were also derived from seawater that had evaporated to higher salinities and had precipitated halite. The concentrations of Na, K, and Li are what would be expected for seawater at this degree of evaporation, and show that these fluids did not interact with the same lithologies as the ore fluids. The major change to their fluid composition was exchange of Mg for Ca during dolomitization. We suggest that the ore fluids could only have reached their high salinity by evaporation of seawater on the extensive shallow water shelf regions that existed over much of the Irish midlands.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of recent developments of the creep-resistant magnesium alloys is presented, and the metallurgical principles for designing the creep resistant alloys are highlighted.
Abstract: Magnesium, as a lightweight construction material, has rapidly grown its applications in the automotive industry since the early 1990s. To maximize the weight reduction of vehicles by lightweight magnesium alloys in the coming years, the use of newly developed high-temperature magnesium alloys is expected to increase significantly, particularly in the powertrain applications where the creep resistance is always required. This article reviews recent developments of the creep-resistant magnesium alloys. Fundamental aspects of the creep deformation theory and mechanisms are described. The metallurgical principles for designing the creep-resistant alloys are highlighted. The creep behavior of magnesium and its conventional alloys is discussed based on some microstructure analyses. The mechanical properties, microstructure, and manufacturability of the newly developed creep-resistant magnesium alloys are also overviewed. The further research and development work is outlined in terms of developing magn...
