TL;DR: In this paper, a quantum-electrodynamic corrections of O(${\mathit{mc}}^{2}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}^{6}$ln\ensureMath{\alpha}) to the electron-electron interaction in helium are evaluated for several states.
Abstract: Quantum-electrodynamic corrections of O(${\mathit{mc}}^{2}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}^{6}$ln\ensuremath{\alpha}) to the electron-electron interaction in helium are evaluated for several states. The additional energy shift, which is an order of \ensuremath{\alpha} smaller than the leading Araki-Sucher terms, raises the predicted energy of the 1s2s $^{1}$${\mathit{S}}_{0}$ state by 2.49 MHz to -960 332 039.43(18) MHz relative to ${\mathrm{He}}^{+}$(1s). The new value significantly alters the comparison with recent high-precision experiments.

TL;DR: Student-teacher anxieties are related to demographic variables, experiential variables, and dispositional variables; however, class management anxiety did not decrease after practice teaching, and anxiety increased as placement grade level decreased.
Abstract: Background. Anxiety is an important consideration in teaching, with implications for classroom success. Aims. We investigated the nature of anxiety in student teachers. Samples. Approximately 1000 student teachers in Canada were involved in four studies to explore education-related anxieties. Methods. Incorporating a cross-cultural focus, student teachers were tested on an anxiety measure designed for British student teachers, then examined for (1) the impact of practice teaching, (2) the value of instructional preparation, (3) demographic variables, and (4) models that predict anxiety. Results. Anxiety factors (i.e., evaluation, pedagogical, class management, and staff relations), similar to those for British participants, emerged with evaluation anxiety being highest. A practice teaching experience generated reduced anxiety for both sexes, but more so for females, with the greatest reductions for evaluation and pedagogical anxiety. In one study, participants reported anxieties prior to instruction (PRETEST), following instruction (POST-INSTR) and following practice teaching (POST-TEACH). Females showed higher anxiety ratings than males (PRETEST and POST-INSTR) but were comparable to males after practice teaching. Females in the lower grades division showed higher anxiety scores. Anxiety decreased between PRE-TEST and POST-INSTR for all four scales, and between POST-INSTR and POST-TEACH for evaluation, pedagogy and staff relations; however, class management anxiety did not decrease after practice teaching. Also, anxiety increased as placement grade level decreased. All models (demographic, experiential, and dispositional) were predictive but the best predictor was the psychological disposition to feel overwhelmed. Conclusions. Student-teacher anxieties are related to demographic variables, experiential variables, and dispositional variables.

TL;DR: The scripting of sexual encounters among young people in Kenyan is described using results of 28 focus group discussions conducted with young people attending primary school standard 7, from four different ethnic groups and living in 22 different communities.
Abstract: The scripting of sexual encounters among young people in Kenyan is described using results of 28 focus group discussions conducted with young people attending primary school standard 7, from four different ethnic groups and living in 22 different communities. Sexual encounters were described as both mundane and inevitable and followed a predetermined scripted sequence of events and interactions in which girls and boys played complementary roles. These scripts were set within discourses of force and the exchange of gifts for sex. The gendered nature of the script and its social and cultural foundations are discussed. Potential strategies for developing HIV prevention programming are discussed from the perspective of existing sexual scripts.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated how O2 and H2 affect the corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel in simulated anode and cathode environments of a PEM fuel cell, and they showed that less corrosion occurred in a simulated cathode environment because it was easier to passivate SS316L in an O2-containing environment.

TL;DR: Waves were measured over tidal cycles on a sloping, basaltic shore platform at Scots Bay in the macrotidal Bay of Fundy (large tidal range 13.5 m) and on a horizontal, argillite platform at Mont Louis in Gaspe, Quebec (Large tidal range 3 m), and video cameras were used to record the height and period of the waves against a series of graduated metal poles anchored along surveyed, shore normal profiles as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Waves were measured over tidal cycles on a sloping, basaltic shore platform at Scots Bay in the macrotidal Bay of Fundy (large tidal range 13.5 m), and on a horizontal, argillite platform at Mont Louis in Gaspe, Quebec (large tidal range 3 m). Video cameras were used to record the height and period of the waves against a series of graduated metal poles anchored along surveyed, shore-normal profiles. Field measurement and theoretical considerations suggest that wave height increases with elevation at Scots Bay, reflecting the occurrence of a gently sloping tidal flat below the midtidal level and higher gradients on the upper than on the lower parts of the platform. Calculated pressures generated within the rock along joints and other discontinuities suggest that wave conditions are suitable for mechanical-wave erosion at Scots Bay. Waves generally break on the low tide cliff at the seaward edge of the platform at Mont Louis, preventing any wave action on the shallow, flooded platform surface behin...
