Abstract: We examine, through conceptual analysis and investigation of the available literature, some commonly assumed models of the relationship between SoTL and scholarly teaching, demonstrate how those models fare against the conceptual and empirical evidence, and propose an alternative that better represents the concepts involved. Both our definitions and the model we choose to represent their relationship impact our decisions regarding policies, programs, and resources. If the assumptions behind these practices are not warranted, our reflexive use, dissemination and propagation of these practices must be questioned. Keywords : Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Scholarly Teaching, Philosophy of Higher Education, Conceptual Analysis Introduction i Although it has been nearly twenty years since Boyer popularized the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in Scholarship Reconsidered , unsupported assumptions abound, particularly regarding the relationship between SoTL and scholarly teaching. Some assume that scholarly teaching is coextensive with, or subsumed within, SoTL. Others believe that scholarly teaching is a step on the road to SoTL, the latter conceived as the apex of a developmental process. A few assume that people become scholarly teachers by first engaging in SoTL research, or that scholarly teaching, SoTL, and effective teaching provide mutual support. Most importantly, many in the closely intertwined educational development and SoTL communities assume that both SoTL and scholarly teaching actually lead to better teaching and learning. Abstract: Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs) concentrations are increasing exponentially in biota. We studied the growth of American kestrel (Falco sparverius) nestlings exposed in ovo and during development to environmentally relevant PBDE congeners and concentrations. Eggs within each clutch, divided between groups by laying sequence, were injected into the air cell at 19 days of incubation with safflower oil or penta-BDE congeners BDE-47, -99, -100, and -153 dissolved in safflower oil (18.7 microg total sigmaPBDEs/egg), approximating current levels in Great Lakes herring gulls. The measured proportions of BDE congeners found in the dosing oil were 56.4% of BDE-47; 27.2% of BDE-99; 24.8% of BDE-100; and 0.6% of BDE-153. For 29 days, nestlings were orally gavaged daily with the same sigmaPBDE mixture (15.6 +/- 0.3 ng/g body weight/day). Relative congener abundances in the dosing mixture compared to the carcasses suggest biotransformation of BDE-47; BDE-183 was also detected. PBDE exposure did not affect hatching or fledging success. PBDE-exposed nestlings were larger (weight, bones, feathers) as they gained weight more quickly and ate more food, the latter in association with their SigmaPBDE body burdens. BDE-100 was most influential on nestling growth, being positively associated with size, weight gain, and food consumption. Increasing concentrations of BDE-183 and -153 were related to longer bones, and BDE-99 to longer feathers. The larger size of the PBDE-exposed birds may be detrimental to their bone structure and have excessive energetic costs. The repeated relationships with BDE-100 and growth may be important for wild Falconidae, since this is the predominant penta-BDE congener in these raptors.

Abstract: We propose a new diagnostic for quantum chaos. We show that the time evolution of complexity for a particular type of target state can provide equivalent information about the classical Lyapunov exponent and scrambling time as out-of-time-order correlators. Moreover, for systems that can be switched from a regular to unstable (chaotic) regime by a tuning of the coupling constant of the interaction Hamiltonian, we find that the complexity defines a new time scale. We interpret this time scale as recording when the system makes the transition from regular to chaotic behavior.

Abstract: The distribution of diagenetic alterations in the fluvial, deltaic and shallow marine, arkosic to subarkosic sandstones (average Q72F26L02) of the Mullaghmore Formation (Carboniferous, NW Ireland) can be predicted within a sequence stratigraphic framework. Eogenetic calcite (18OPDB = -13.3‰ to -6.5‰, 13CPDB = -3.0 to +3.4‰, and 87Sr/86Sr = 0.706721 to 0.709227) and ferron dolomite (FeCO3 = 8-12 mol%; 18OPDB = -14.2‰ to -7.8‰, 13CPDB = -1.4‰ to -1.0‰, and 87Sr/86Sr = 0.709051 to 0.709167) occur in bioclast-rich, transgressive lag deposits at parasequence boundaries and transgressive surfaces, and in wave-influenced, deltaic, highstand systems tract (HST) deposits. Mesogenetic illite, chlorite, baroque dolomite (FeCO3 = 16 mol%; 18OPDB = -14.2‰ to -12.7‰, 13CPDB = -3.8‰ to -1.0‰), quartz, and calcite (18OPDB = -15.7‰ to -12.5‰, 13CPDB = -5.8‰ to -3.7‰, and 87Sr/86Sr = 0.709016 to 0.709122) were formed mainly in the bioclast-poor deposits, which were not pervasively cemented by carbonates during near-surface eodiagenesis. These deposits include fluvial, incised-valley sandstones of lowstand systems tract (LST), and fluvial-dominated, deltaic sandstones of transgressive systems tract (TST) and HST. Illite is the dominant diagenetic clay mineral in the fluvial, incised-valley sandstones of LST, possibly because of simultaneous albitization of K-feldspars. Conversely, chlorite, dominates in the fluvial-dominated, deltaic sandstones of TST and HST, because of the presence of suitable precursor clays. The integration of diagenesis into sequence stratigraphic framework of clastic sequences should improve the ability to predict the spatial and temporal distribution of diagenetic alterations and related reservoir-quality modifications of sandstone deposits.

Abstract: With e-business emerging as a key enabler to drive supply chains, the focus of supply chain management has been shifted from production efficiency to customer-driven and partnership synchronization approaches. This strategic shift depends on the match between the demands and offerings that deliver the services. To achieve this, we need to coordinate the flow of information among the services, and link their business processes under various constraints. Existing approaches to this problem have relied on complete information of services and resources, and have failed to adequately address the dynamics and uncertainties of the operating environments. The real-world situation is complicated as a result of undetermined requirements of services involved in the chain, unpredictable solutions contributed by service providers, and dynamic selection and aggregation of solutions to services. This paper examines an agent-mediated approach to on-demand e-business supply chain integration. Each agent works as a service broker, exploring individual service decisions as well as interacting with each other for achieving compatibility and coherence among the decisions of all services. Based on the framework, a prototype has been implemented with simulated experiments highlighting the effectiveness of the approach.
