TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that contextually speaking, local and traditional knowledge is valuable, adaptable and necessary in coping with risk and uncertainty in a changing world, while cautioning against a misguided notion of traditional knowledge as a panacea to all the ills of local agriculture.
Abstract: Local knowledge has played an active role in the lives of rural communities in virtually every part of the world. In Jamaica, traditional cropping systems based on local informal knowledge have been practiced since the days of slavery and play a vital role in meeting food security. Yet, some negative attitudes remain about the legitimacy and relevance of small-scale farmers' local and traditional knowledge. This paper discusses some conceptual and empirical issues related to the application of local knowledge among smallscale food farmers in central Jamaica. The paper argues that contextually speaking, local and traditional knowledge is valuable, adaptable and necessary in coping with risk and uncertainty in a changing world, while cautioning against a misguided notion of traditional knowledge as a panacea to all the ills of local agriculture.

TL;DR: Exotic species of southwestern Ontario have life history traits that facilitate success in degraded, disturbed and highly fragmented environments and were significantly over-represented in disturbed and degraded habitats and moist substrates.
Abstract: We compared taxonomic and ecological attributes of native and introduced plants (N = 1330 and 484 species, respectively) of southwestern Ontario, using two regional floras (Essex County and Hamilto

TL;DR: The present report is an attempt to collect in one place the analytical interferences that are most commonly found during the collection of SERS/SERRS spectra.
Abstract: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) are powerful optical scattering techniques used in such frontier areas of research as ultrasensitive chemical analysis, the characterization of nanostructures, and the detection of single molecules. However, measuring and, most importantly, interpreting SERS/SERRS spectra can be incredibly challenging. This is the result of modifications to the measured spectra that are due to of a variety of instabilities and contributions. These interferences and modifications arise from the nature of the enhancement itself, as well as the conditions used to attain SERS spectra. The present report is an attempt to collect in one place the analytical interferences that are most commonly found during the collection of SERS/SERRS spectra.

TL;DR: A questionnaire to look at attitudes toward four disorders among 166 university students representing English-speaking North American culture and several other cultures showed significant group differences on items involving the subjects' beliefs about the emotional health of persons with speech disorders and about the potential ability of speech-disordered persons to change their own speech.
Abstract: Speech‐language pathologists serving multicultural populations may encounter unfamiliar beliefs about speech disorders among the members of different cultures. This study used a questionnaire to lo...
