Abstract: This paper analyses on the discourses employed by a subset of gay and bisexual men who no longer practise protected sex more than twenty years into the HIV epidemic. In‐depth interviews with 102 men in Toronto are used to examine the moral reasoning of those for whom the language of barebacking provides a shared set of accounts and tacit understandings for unprotected sex. Barebacking raises some of the central issues of contemporary theory around risk, responsibility, and ethics, and poses new challenges to HIV prevention policy as barebacking discourses adapt some of the major tenets of neoliberal ideology by combining notions of informed consent, contractual interaction, free market choice, and responsibility in new ways. At the same time, interviews with barebackers reveal competing and contradictory discourses that suggest new avenues of engagement for HIV prevention initiatives.

Abstract: This study examined the determinants and consequences of survivors' coping responses to a recent workforce reduction involving permanent layoffs. The participants consisted of 200 unionized technicians in the telecommunications industry. Survivors with high optimistic predispositions and a strong sense of mastery were more likely to engage in control-oriented coping. Perceived threat of job loss was positively related to the use of both control and escape coping whereas sense of powerlessness was negatively related to the use of control coping. Control coping was associated with positive outcomes and escape coping with negative outcomes. Coping had both additive and interactive effects on the outcome variables. The implications of these findings for management are discussed.

Abstract: In this paper, a new image indexing and retrieval algorithm using local mesh patterns are proposed for biomedical image retrieval application. The standard local binary pattern encodes the relationship between the referenced pixel and its surrounding neighbors, whereas the proposed method encodes the relationship among the surrounding neighbors for a given referenced pixel in an image. The possible relationships among the surrounding neighbors are depending on the number of neighbors, P. In addition, the effectiveness of our algorithm is confirmed by combining it with the Gabor transform. To prove the effectiveness of our algorithm, three experiments have been carried out on three different biomedical image databases. Out of which two are meant for computer tomography (CT) and one for magnetic resonance (MR) image retrieval. It is further mentioned that the database considered for three experiments are OASIS-MRI database, NEMA-CT database, and VIA/I-ELCAP database which includes region of interest CT images. The results after being investigated show a significant improvement in terms of their evaluation measures as compared to LBP, LBP with Gabor transform, and other spatial and transform domain methods.

Abstract: Magnesium alloys are increasingly being used as lightweight materials in the automotive, defense, electronics, biomaterial and aerospace industries. However, their inherently poor corrosion and wear resistance have, so far, limited their application. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) in an environmentally friendly aluminates electrolyte has been used to produce oxide coatings with thicknesses of similar to 80 mu m on an AJ62 magnesium alloy. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) in the visible and near ultraviolet (NUV) band (285 nm-800 nm) was employed to characterize the PEO plasma. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the coated materials, and potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a 3.5% NaCl solution were used to determine the corrosion behavior. It was found that the plasma discharge behavior significantly influenced the microstructure and the morphology of the oxide coatings and, hence the corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of the coated alloy was increased by changing the current mode from unipolar to bipolar, where the strong plasma discharges had been reduced or eliminated.
