Abstract: In this paper we propose a new approach to estimating the systematic risk (the beta of an asset) in a capital asset pricing model (CAPM). The proposed method is based on a wavelet multiscaling approach that decomposes a given time series on a scale-by-scale basis. At each scale, the wavelet variance of the market return and the wavelet covariance between the market return and a portfolio are calculated to obtain an estimate of the portfolio's beta. The empirical results show that the relationship between the return of a portfolio and its beta becomes stronger as the wavelet scale increases. Therefore, the predictions of the CAPM model are more relevant in the medium long run as compared to short time horizons.

Abstract: This tutorial review describes metal-based anion receptors in the context of first- and second-sphere coordination. Selected examples (case studies) are used to show how metal ions can be used to (1) organise hydrogen-bond donor sites on ligands in order to bind anions, (2) influence the conformation of ligands to enhance anion binding, (3) alter the binding conformation of a receptor depending on the solvent and (4) develop a receptor to target a specific anion (sulfate) for sequestration.

Abstract: Nitrobenzene is a major environmental pollutant, and its degradation is difficultto achieve. Hence, a chemical reduction pretreatment is sought in this research, before the resulting aniline can be treated by enzyme-mediated oxidative polymerization. Zerovalent iron (Fe0) has been successfully employed to reduce nitrobenzene to aniline in synthetic wastewater in both batch and continuous flow reactors. The concentration of nitrobenzene studied was thatwhich would be present in industrial wastewater streams (millimolar, 123 ppm), a concentration range considerably higher than those studied previously with groundwater by other researchers. Anaerobic conditions were maintained in the reactors by including Na2SO3 as an oxygen scavenger in the presence of CoCl2.6H2O, which acted as a catalyst. Batch reactors exhibited adsorption of aniline on the Fe0, which could be described by a langmuir isotherm. A 200 g Fe0 (particle size: 1-2 mm) bed completely converted 1 mM of nitrobenzene flowing upward for about 600 pore-volumes before experiencing flow reduction due to clogging due to corrosion products. Green-black precipitates (Fe0 corrosion products) were formed at the influent end of the column which were identified as maghemite.

Abstract: A group of elementary students (n = 155) were surveyed with respect to four aspects of relationships with pets—preference, ownership, attachment, and attitude—in order to further explore the connection that appears to exist between human–animal interactions and empathy. The investigation was initiated, in part, in order to elaborate upon findings from an earlier study (Daly and Morton 2003) and focused mainly on the relationships between children and dogs and cats, although horses, birds, and fish were also included. Some of the general findings related to dogs and cats are: (1) children who preferred (Pet Preference Inventory) both dogs and cats were more empathic than those who preferred cats or dogs only; (2) those who owned both dogs and cats were more empathic than those who owned only a dog, owned only a cat, or who owned neither; (3) those who were highly attached to their pets (Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale) were more empathic than those who were less attached; and (4) empathy and pos...
