Abstract: Context.—Pain is the most disturbing symptom of
diabetic peripheral neuropathy. As many as 45% of patients with
diabetes mellitus develop peripheral neuropathies.Objective.—To evaluate the effect of gabapentin monotherapy
on pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.Design.—Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled,
8-week trial conducted between July 1996 and March 1997.Setting.—Outpatient clinics at 20 sites.Patients.—The 165 patients enrolled had a 1- to 5-year
history of pain attributed to diabetic neuropathy and a minimum 40-mm
pain score on the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire visual analogue
scale.Intervention.—Gabapentin (titrated from 900 to 3600
mg/d or maximum tolerated dosage) or placebo.Main Outcome Measures.—The primary efficacy measure was
daily pain severity as measured on an 11-point Likert scale (0, no
pain; 10, worst possible pain). Secondary measures included sleep
interference scores, the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire scores,
Patient Global Impression of Change and Clinical Global Impression of
Change, the Short Form–36 Quality of Life Questionnaire scores, and
the Profile of Mood States results.Results.—Eighty-four patients received gabapentin and 70
(83%) completed the study; 81 received placebo and 65 (80%) completed
the study. By intent-to-treat analysis, gabapentin-treated patients'
mean daily pain score at the study end point (baseline, 6.4; end point,
3.9; n = 82) was significantly lower (P<.001) compared with
the placebo-treated patients' end-point score (baseline, 6.5; end
point, 5.1; n = 80). All secondary outcome measures of pain were
significantly better in the gabapentin group than in the placebo group.
Additional statistically significant differences favoring gabapentin
treatment were observed in measures of quality of life (Short Form–36
Quality of Life Questionnaire and Profile of Mood States). Adverse
events experienced significantly more frequently in the gabapentin
group were dizziness (20 [24%] in the gabapentin group vs 4
[4.9%] in the control group; P<.001) and somnolence (19
[23%] in the gabapentin group vs 5 [6%] in the control group;
P = .003). Confusion was also more frequent in the gabapentin
group (7 [8%] vs 1 [1.2%]; P = .06).Conclusion.—Gabapentin monotherapy appears to be
efficacious for the treatment of pain and sleep interference associated
with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and exhibits positive effects on
mood and quality of life.

Abstract: Using feminist theory about the social construction of the female body, a scale was developed and validated to measure objectified body consciousness (OBC) in young women (N = 502) and middle-aged women (N = 151). Scales used were (a) surveillance (viewing the body as an outside observer), (b) body shame (feeling shame when the body does not conform), and (c) appearance control beliefs. The three scales were demonstrated to be distinct dimensions with acceptable reliabilities. Surveillance and body shame correlated negatively with body esteem. Control beliefs correlated positively with body esteem in young women and were related to frequency of restricted eating in all samples. All three scales were positively related to disordered eating. The relationship of OBC to women's body experience is discussed.

Abstract: In applications throughout science and engineering one is often faced with the challenge of solving an ill-posed inverse problem, where the number of available measurements is smaller than the dimension of the model to be estimated. However in many practical situations of interest, models are constrained structurally so that they only have a few degrees of freedom relative to their ambient dimension. This paper provides a general framework to convert notions of simplicity into convex penalty functions, resulting in convex optimization solutions to linear, underdetermined inverse problems. The class of simple models considered includes those formed as the sum of a few atoms from some (possibly infinite) elementary atomic set; examples include well-studied cases from many technical fields such as sparse vectors (signal processing, statistics) and low-rank matrices (control, statistics), as well as several others including sums of a few permutation matrices (ranked elections, multiobject tracking), low-rank tensors (computer vision, neuroscience), orthogonal matrices (machine learning), and atomic measures (system identification). The convex programming formulation is based on minimizing the norm induced by the convex hull of the atomic set; this norm is referred to as the atomic norm. The facial structure of the atomic norm ball carries a number of favorable properties that are useful for recovering simple models, and an analysis of the underlying convex geometry provides sharp estimates of the number of generic measurements required for exact and robust recovery of models from partial information. These estimates are based on computing the Gaussian widths of tangent cones to the atomic norm ball. When the atomic set has algebraic structure the resulting optimization problems can be solved or approximated via semidefinite programming. The quality of these approximations affects the number of measurements required for recovery, and this tradeoff is characterized via some examples. Thus this work extends the catalog of simple models (beyond sparse vectors and low-rank matrices) that can be recovered from limited linear information via tractable convex programming.

Abstract: Heat shock 70 kDa proteins (HSP70s) are ubiquitous molecular chaperones that function in a myriad of biological processes, modulating polypeptide folding, degradation and translocation across membranes, and protein-protein interactions. This multitude of roles is not easily reconciled with the universality of the activity of HSP70s in ATP-dependent client protein-binding and release cycles. Much of the functional diversity of the HSP70s is driven by a diverse class of cofactors: J proteins. Often, multiple J proteins function with a single HSP70. Some target HSP70 activity to clients at precise locations in cells and others bind client proteins directly, thereby delivering specific clients to HSP70 and directly determining their fate.
