Abstract: Over the past decade, materialism has emerged as an important research topic Materialism is generally viewed as the value placed on the acquisition of material objects Previous research finds that high levels of material values are negatively associated with subjective well-being However, relatively little is known about the relationship between materialism and well-being within the broader context of an individual's value system In this article, we examine the relationship between material values and other important life values In addition, we draw on values theory to examine a novel conceptualization of why materialism is antithetical to well-being Specifically, our theory proposes that the individual orientation of material values conflicts with collective-oriented values, such as family values and religious values This state of values conflict creates psychological tension, and this tension is associated with a reduced sense of well-being Using both a survey sample of 373 adults from across the United States and an experimental study of 120 college students, we find considerable support for this conflicting values perspective

Abstract: The development of efficient and robust earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an ongoing challenge. We report metallic cobalt pyrite (cobalt disulfide, CoS2) as one such high-activity candidate material and demonstrate that its specific morphology—film, microwire, or nanowire, made available through controlled synthesis—plays a crucial role in determining its overall catalytic efficacy. The increase in effective electrode surface area that accompanies CoS2 micro- and nanostructuring substantially boosts its HER catalytic performance, with CoS2 nanowire electrodes achieving geometric current densities of −10 mA cm–2 at overpotentials as low as −145 mV vs the reversible hydrogen electrode. Moreover, micro- and nanostructuring of the CoS2 material has the synergistic effect of increasing its operational stability, cyclability, and maximum achievable rate of hydrogen generation by promoting the release of evolved gas bubbles from the electrode surface. Abstract: K-Anonymity has been proposed as a mechanism for protecting privacy in microdata publishing, and numerous recoding "models" have been considered for achieving 𝑘anonymity This paper proposes a new multidimensional model, which provides an additional degree of flexibility not seen in previous (single-dimensional) approaches Often this flexibility leads to higher-quality anonymizations, as measured both by general-purpose metrics and more specific notions of query answerability Optimal multidimensional anonymization is NP-hard (like previous optimal 𝑘-anonymity problems) However, we introduce a simple greedy approximation algorithm, and experimental results show that this greedy algorithm frequently leads to more desirable anonymizations than exhaustive optimal algorithms for two single-dimensional models

Abstract: This paper reports the results from a second characterisation of the 91500 zircon, including data from electron probe microanalysis, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and laser fluorination analyses. The focus of this initiative was to establish the suitability of this large single zircon crystal for calibrating in situ analyses of the rare earth elements and oxygen isotopes, as well as to provide working values for key geochemical systems. In addition to extensive testing of the chemical and structural homogeneity of this sample, the occurrence of banding in 91500 in both backscattered electron and cathodoluminescence images is described in detail. Blind intercomparison data reported by both LA-ICP-MS and SIMS laboratories indicate that only small systematic differences exist between the data sets provided by these two techniques. Furthermore, the use of NIST SRM 610 glass as the calibrant for SIMS analyses was found to introduce little or no systematic error into the results for zircon. Based on both laser fluorination and SIMS data, zircon 91500 seems to be very well suited for calibrating in situ oxygen isotopic analyses.
