Abstract: IMPORTANCE Sentinel lymph node (SLN) surgery provides reliable nodal staging information with less morbidity than axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for patients with clinically node-negative (cN0) breast cancer. The application of SLN surgery for staging the axilla following chemotherapy for women who initially had node-positive cN1 breast cancer is unclear because of high false-negative results reported in previous studies.

Abstract: We present an overview of a new integral field spectroscopic survey called MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory), one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) that began on 2014 July 1. MaNGA will investigate the internal kinematic structure and composition of gas and stars in an unprecedented sample of 10,000 nearby galaxies. We summarize essential characteristics of the instrument and survey design in the context of MaNGA's key science goals and present prototype observations to demonstrate MaNGA's scientific potential. MaNGA employs dithered observations with 17 fiber-bundle integral field units that vary in diameter from 12'' (19 fibers) to 32'' (127 fibers). Two dual-channel spectrographs provide simultaneous wavelength coverage over 3600-10300 A at R ~ 2000. With a typical integration time of 3 hr, MaNGA reaches a target r-band signal-to-noise ratio of 4-8 (A–1 per 2'' fiber) at 23 AB mag arcsec–2, which is typical for the outskirts of MaNGA galaxies. Targets are selected with M * 109 M ☉ using SDSS-I redshifts and i-band luminosity to achieve uniform radial coverage in terms of the effective radius, an approximately flat distribution in stellar mass, and a sample spanning a wide range of environments. Analysis of our prototype observations demonstrates MaNGA's ability to probe gas ionization, shed light on recent star formation and quenching, enable dynamical modeling, decompose constituent components, and map the composition of stellar populations. MaNGA's spatially resolved spectra will enable an unprecedented study of the astrophysics of nearby galaxies in the coming 6 yr.

Abstract: Solid-state disks (SSDs) have the potential to revolutionize the storage system landscape. However, there is little published work about their internal organization or the design choices that SSD manufacturers face in pursuit of optimal performance. This paper presents a taxonomy of such design choices and analyzes the likely performance of various configurations using a trace-driven simulator and workload traces extracted from real systems. We find that SSD performance and lifetime is highly workload-sensitive, and that complex systems problems that normally appear higher in the storage stack, or even in distributed systems, are relevant to device firmware.

Abstract: Photosynthetic responses to carbon dioxide concentration can provide data on a number of important parameters related to leaf physiology. Methods for fitting a model to such data are briefly described. The method will fit the following parameters: Vcmax, J, TPU, Rd and gm [maximum carboxylation rate allowed by ribulose 1·5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), rate of photosynthetic electron transport (based on NADPH requirement), triose phosphate use, day respiration and mesophyll conductance, respectively].The method requires at least five data pairs of net CO2 assimilation (A) and [CO2] in the intercellular airspaces of the leaf (Ci) and requires users to indicate the presumed limiting factor. The output is (1) calculated CO2 partial pressure at the sites of carboxylation, Cc, (2) values for the five parameters at the measurement temperature and (3) values adjusted to 25 °C to facilitate comparisons. Fitting this model is a way of exploring leaf level photosynthesis. However, interpreting leaf level photosynthesis in terms of underlying biochemistry and biophysics is subject to assumptions that hold to a greater or lesser degree, a major assumption being that all parts of the leaf are behaving in the same way at each instant.

Abstract: Experiments were conducted with male rats to quantitate the relation ship between dietary selenium (Se) intake and the amount of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in erythrocytes and liver. Weanling male rats were fed torula yeast-based diets with 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, or 5.0 ppm Se supplemented as sodium selenite. Liver GSH-Px fell to undetectable levels (<1% of that found in the weanling rats) within 24 days in the O ppm Se group; feeding 0.1 ppm Se, or greater, caused liver GSH-Px to increase above that found in the weanling rats. The erythrocyte GSH-Px response to lack of dietary Se was somewhat smaller in magnitude and more gradual; however, only 21% of initial erythrocyte GSH-Px activity remained in the unsupplemented group after 66 days. Increased dietary Se resulted in corresponding increases of erythrocyte GSH-Px activity. Resupplementing with 0.1, 0.5, or 5.0 ppm Se elevated the depressed erythrocyte GSH-Px levels of the deficient rats. Increased dietary Se provided for both faster elevation, and higher maximal GSH-Px activity which in all cases was achieved 60 to 90 days after resupplementation. The results suggest that tissue GSH-Px can be used as an indicator of animal Se status, but other factors such as age, sex, and dietary vitamin E may have to be considered. Lack of GSH-Px in livers of Se-deficient rats may explain the liver necrosis observed when the diet is also deficient in vitamin E and sulfur-containing amino acids. J. Nutr. 104: 580-587,
