Abstract: Introduction: Both grip and knee extension strength are often used to characterize overall limb muscle strength. We sought to determine if the measures actually reflect a common construct. Methods: The isometric grip and knee extension strength of 164 healthy men and women (range, 18–85 years) were measured bilaterally using standard procedures. Pearson correlations (r), Cronbach alpha, principal components analysis, and multiple regression/correlation were used to investigate the dimensionality of the measures. Results: Left and right grip forces and knee extension torques were highly correlated, internally consistent, and loaded on a single component. Gender and age explained the variance in both measures, but height added to the explanation of grip strength, whereas weight added to the explanation of knee extension strength. Conclusions: Among healthy adults, grip and knee extension strength reflect a common underlying construct. The measures, however, are affected differently by height and weight. Abstract: The present review begins by briefly tracing history in the early days of development of cast metal-matrix composites and also outlines different casting routes for their synthesis. The problems faced by the quality of cast products and their relation to the process variables and characteristics of a given process, constitute the main theme of the review. The development of microstructure has been discussed in view of nucleation behaviour anticipated on the basis of estimated interface energies. The solidification around dispersoids and in regions away from it has been highlighted. Porosity in cast composites (its origin and control in cast components by suitable mould design) has engaged attention because of damage to mechanical properties due to porosity. The chemical reactions at the interface between dispersoid and matrix during processing of certain important systems of composites, have been described and the means of controlling these reactions have been indicated. The review concludes by drawing attention to the potential for application of cast composites in different industrial components and underlines the necessity of research in certain related fields so that industrial application of cast metal-matrix composites will soon become a reality.

Abstract: Researchers have theorized that innate personal traits are related to leadership success. Although links between psychological characteristics and leadership success have been well established, research has yet to identify any objective physical traits of leaders that predict organizational performance. In the research reported here, we identified leaders’ facial structure as a specific physical trait that correlates with organizational performance. Specifically, we found that firms whose male CEOs have wider faces (relative to facial height) achieve superior financial performance. Decision-making dynamics within a firm’s leadership team moderate this effect, such that the relationship between a given CEO’s facial measurements and his firm’s financial performance is stronger in firms with cognitively simple leadership teams.
