Abstract: Different elements of the environment have been posited to influence type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This systematic review summarizes evidence on the environmental determinants of T2DM identified in four databases. It proposes a theoretical framework illustrating the link between environment and T2DM, and briefly discusses some methodological challenges and potential solutions, and opportunities for future research. Walkability, air pollution, food and physical activity environment and roadways proximity were the most common environmental characteristics studied. Of the more than 200 reported and extracted relationships assessed in 60 studies, 82 showed significant association in the expected direction. In general, higher levels of walkability and green space were associated with lower T2DM risk, while increased levels of noise and air pollution were associated with greater risk. Current evidence is limited in terms of volume and study quality prohibiting causal inferences. However, the evidence suggests that environmental characteristics may influence T2DM prevention, and also provides a reasonable basis for further investigation with better quality data and longitudinal studies with policy-relevant environmental measures. This pursuit of better evidence is critical to support health-orientated urban design and city planning.

Abstract: Single crystalline copper oxide nanoribbons were synthesized via a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal route. The resulting CuO nanoribbons contain substantial amounts of nanorings and nanoloops. High resolution TEM analysis identified CuO nanoribbons growing along the [010] direction. CuO nanoribbons exhibited excellent sensing performance towards formaldehyde and ethanol vapours with rapid response and high sensitivity at low operating temperatures. We found that the loading of a small amount of Au or Pt nanoparticles on the surface of CuO nanoribbons can effectively enhance and functionalize the gas sensing performance of CuO nanoribbons.

Abstract: In lithium-ion batteries, nanocrystalline intermetallic alloys, nanosized composite materials, carbon nanotubes, and nanosized transition-metal oxides are all promising new anode materials, while nanosized LiCoO2, LiFePO4, LiMn2O4, and LiMn2O4 show higher capacity and better cycle life as cathode materials than their usual larger-particle equivalents. The addition of nanosized metal-oxide powders to polymer electrolyte improves the performance of the polymer electrolyte for all solid-state lithium rechargeable batteries. To meet the challenge of global warming, a new generation of lithium rechargeable batteries with excellent safety, reliability, and cycling life is needed, i.e., not only for applications in consumer electronics, but especially for clean energy storage and for use in hybrid electric vehicles and aerospace. Nanomaterials and nanotechnologies can lead to a new generation of lithium secondary batteries. The aim of this paper is to review the recent developments on nanomaterials and nanotechniques used for anode, cathode, and electrolyte materials, the impact of nanomaterials on the performance of lithium batteries, and the modes of action of the nanomaterials in lithium rechargeable batteries.

Abstract: Cloud computing represents a major step up in computing whereby shared computation resources are provided on demand. In such a scenario, applications and data thereof can be hosted by various networked virtual machines (VMs). As applications, especially data-intensive applications, often need to communicate with data frequently, the network I/O performance would affect the overall application performance significantly. Therefore, placement of virtual machines which host an application and migration of these virtual machines while the unexpected network latency or congestion occurs is critical to achieve and maintain the application performance. To address these issues, this paper proposes a virtual machine placement and migration approach to minimizing the data transfer time consumption. Our simulation studies suggest that the proposed approach is effective in optimizing the data transfer between the virtual machine and data, thus helping optimize the overall application performance.
