TL;DR: In this article, a reaction pathway based on known isomer characteristics and constituent reactions, including lycopene autoxidation/isomerization relationships, is proposed to improve tomato powder color retention and quality.
Abstract: Most stability studies on carotenoid pigments and vitamins A in food systems concern autoxidation only. Trans-cis isomerization of all-trans lycopene (ATL) during tomato processing, and subsequent reversion in storage, lead to different sequence. Proposed reaction pathway scheme, based on known isomer characteristics and constituent reactions, includes lycopene autoxidation/isomerization relationships. The pathway may be applicable more generally to carotenoid degradation in other foods. Stage I: ATL oxidizes or isomerizes (up to 20%) to less colored, more oxidizable cis-forms which either autoxidize or revert to ATL. Processing and storage conditions influence distribution between two routes. Stage II: all forms autoxidize. Oxidized degradation products and fragments accumulate, with product fading and off-flavor. Presented scheme integrates available information, enables both kinetic and technological system considerations. Knowledge of lycopene behavior aids in improving tomato powder color retention and quality.

TL;DR: Considering the induction of BPMO as a means of detoxification in fish, the consequences of i/p application of polluted water extracts from different marine sites to young carp are studied.
Abstract: From the ecological point of view and on account of the interest in the environmental assessment of biological effects of xenobiotics on water organisms, it would be highly desirable to detect their presence by an equally revealing biochemical method in water samples. Considering the induction of BPMO as a means of detoxification in fish, we studied the consequences of i/p application of polluted water extracts from different marine sites to young carp. Aliquots of these extracts served in Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity tests using liver homogenates of pollution-induced fish as activating systems. The results we obtained so far are presented in this paper.

TL;DR: In this article, the importance of cavity temperature in the injection molding process of thermoplastics is emphasized and new criteria for the cavity material selections are given for cavity material selection.
Abstract: The paper stresses the importance of cavity temperature in the injection molding process of thermoplastics. From the study of the temperature field in the mold, it follows that there is no such thing as a uniform mold temperature. The heat balance equation for the injection mold is discussed in detail. It shows that the sum of the heat exchanges during the cycle equals zero. There is an extensive explanation of the heat transfer from the melt to the mold, the heat exchange with the environment, and between the heat exchange medium and the mold. New criteria are given for the cavity material selections. The cavity temperature is a complex function of static and dynamic parameters and should be kept constant in the equal parts of the cycle. This demands a new way of regulating the temperature.

TL;DR: The observations imply that the cyclophosphamide-induced enhancement of tumor metastasis formation was partly due to nonimmunologic factors and part due to suppression of non-T lymphocytes.
Abstract: The capacity of IV injected fibrosarcoma cells to form metastatic nodules in the lungs of corresponding syngeneic CBA mice was enhanced by pretreatment of tumor cell recipients with cyclophosphamide The effet depended upon the dose but not upon the injection route of cyclophosphamide The enhancement of lung-colony formation lasted for about 10 days after injection of the drug, with its maximum at day 1 Cyclophosphamide was also effective in whole body-irradiated and TIR mice Its effect, however, was abolished to a great extent by reconstituting mice with nonseparated or nonadherent spleen and bone marrow cells from either normal or TIR mice Lymphoid cells from CY-treated mice, however, had no such reconstitutive capacity These observations imply that the cyclophosphamide-induced enhancement of tumor metastasis formation was partly due to nonimmunologic factors and partly due to suppression of non-T lymphocytes

TL;DR: In this article, the stability of Fe-Ni-base metallic glasses on annealing in the range 30 to 1000°C was investigated by microhardness measurements, and two maxima in all recorded curves were correlated with other recent experimental evidence for structural relaxation and structural changes in the same metallic glasses.
Abstract: The stability of Fe-Ni-base metallic glasses on annealing in the range 30 to 1000° C was investigated by microhardness measurements. The results (i.e. two maxima in all recorded curves, for annealing temperatures below and above ∼400° C) were correlated with other recent experimental evidence for structural relaxation and structural changes in the same metallic glasses.

TL;DR: The degradation of the aromatic nuclei‐culture biodegradation is confirmed, which confirms the increase in the concentration of conjugated carbonyl groups and carboxyl groups.
Abstract: In this paper we discuss the aerobic biodegradation of calcium libnosulfonate (CLS) in a beechwood sulfite waste liquor by means of a mixed culture of microorganisms consisting of two Trichosporn Years and bacteria in the Arthrobacter (two species), Psedomonas, and Chromobacterium genera. Under the established parameters 50% CLS was biodegraded in 24 hr accompanied by the demethylation of methoxyl groups, the splitting of sulpher–carbon bonds, and the appearance of carbonyl and carboxyl groups. The achieved results by determination of phenolic OH groups, as well as established changes of the absorption bands of IR spectra of the CLS molecule and the results of the shortening of the analyses of the C, H, O, and S, show that the degradation of the aromatic nuclei‐culture biodegradation, which confirms the increase in the concentration of conjugated carbonyl groups and carboxyl groups.

TL;DR: The HLA-B27 antigen was determined in 652 patients with low back pain which had lasted for more than 3 months and demonstrates the importance of this antigen in the differential diagnosis of low backPain.
Abstract: The HLA-B27 antigen was determined in 652 patients with low back pain which had lasted for more than 3 months. A clinical and roentgenological examination of the sacroiliac joints and the thoraco-lumbar spine was performed in all the patients. The control group consisted of 302 unrelated persons who did not show signs of low back pain. Antigen HLA-B27 was found in 276 of these 652 patients attending the ward for rheumatic diseases (42.4 per cent) and in 37 of the 302 unrelated persons in the control group (12.2 per cent). The difference is statistically highly significant (P less than 0.001). Ankylosing spondylitis was found in 128 out of the 276 patients with low back pain and antigen HLA-B27. This demonstrates the importance of this antigen in the differential diagnosis of low back pain.

TL;DR: The results suggest that one or more gestational sacs may be resorbed during pregnancy without any adverse effect on the coexisting normal fetus.
Abstract: Over a period of four years, 41 cases of abnormal multiple pregnancies were diagnosed successfully by ultrasound. These include several rare combinations of abnormalities. The most frequent was a normal pregnancy and a synchronous blighted ovum. Others were twin blighted ova, blighted ovum and missed abortion, missed abortion in both gestational sacs, two embryonic echoes with the development of only one baby, normal fetus and an anencephalic twin, normal fetus and fetus papyraceous, and triplets with two fetuses papyraceous. The results suggest that one or more gestational sacs may be resorbed during pregnancy without any adverse effect on the coexisting normal fetus. From a practical point of view, it is important to be aware of these possibilities before giving the final diagnosis of multiple pregnancy to the patient. The more diagnostic ultrasound is used in obstetrics, the more rare abnormalities associated with multiple pregnancies will be revealed.

TL;DR: The higher gut and carcass rentions of mercury in animals on milk diet could be prevented or reduced by transferring rats from milk diet to rat's diet several days after an oral dose of mercury.
Abstract: The retention of 203Hg was studied six days after a single oral or intraperitoneal administration to six week old female albino rats fed rat's diet or milk. After oral administration rats on milk diet had a two times higher retention of mercury in the gut-free carcass and a 23 times higher retention in the gut than animals on rat's diet. Changes in diet had very little influence on mercury retention after intraperitoneal administration. The higher gut and carcass rentions of mercury in animals on milk diet could be prevented or reduced by transferring rats from milk diet to rat's diet several days after an oral dose of mercury. These results might be relevant for interpreting high gut and carcass retention after oral administration of some metals in suckling and changes which occur at weaning.

TL;DR: According to the results patients with normal and elevated test values have the best prognosis of cancer disease.
Abstract: The authors carried out immunological investigations in 96 patients with laryngeal cancer. The following tests were applied: DNCB, PPD, phyto-test and the lymphocyte count. The patients were divided into three groups: 1) cured, one year following treatment; 2) relapses; 3) died during the first year. The separate group of 13 patients tested twice in first year was analysed too. The immunological tests were also performed in 24 patients with no relapses of laryngeal cancer in the period between 3 and 10 years after treatment. This group was used for a comparative analysis with laryngeal relapses. In our opinion each individual test has its relative merit. According to our results patients with normal and elevated test values have the best prognosis of cancer disease.
