Abstract: Trends of dissolved oxygen content of the surface and bottom layers of the northern Adriatic Sea are analysed for the period 1911–1984. An increase in the surface layer and a decrease in the bottom layer are observed in all seasons except winter. Although the oxygen content of the water column as a whole has not changed significantly, it is inferred, from the increasing difference between the surface and the bottom layer, that the primary productivity of the northern Adriatic Sea is increasing. As the average midsummer oxygen content of the bottom layer decreases, the frequency of mass mortality in the benthic fauna is expected to increase, especially in the northern and western subareas.

TL;DR: This paper has made a classification of the septal pathological deformities and found that a regularly shaped maxilla as well as a symmetric nasal floor serve like a fuse against the more severe deformations after nasal trauma.
Abstract: As a rule some kinds of nasal septum deformities are more frequently found in subjects whose maxilla has more or less stressed morphological irregularities than in those with a normally shaped maxilla. The subjects with asymmetry between the nasal floor levels (the right and left side) show heavier septal damages than others. It means that a regularly shaped maxilla as well as a symmetric nasal floor serve like a fuse against the more severe deformations after nasal trauma. In this paper we have made a classification of the septal pathological deformities.

Abstract: Spectral density of local single-particle excitations for the nondegenerate single-impurity Anderson model is calculated for various values of U/\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\Delta}, ${n}_{f}^{0}$\ensuremath{\equiv}${n}_{f}$(T=0), and T, using the finite-T perturbation theory with U/\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\Delta} as the expansion parameter and the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation for the unperturbed Hamiltonian. For strong Coulomb correlation and at T=0, ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{f}$(\ensuremath{\omega}) is triple peaked in the Kondo region (${n}_{f}^{0}$\ensuremath{\simeq}1), double peaked in the intermediate-valence region (0.8\ensuremath{\gtrsim}${n}_{f}^{0}$\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.5) and single peaked in the region of nearly empty (or full) orbital. As T increases, ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{f}$(\ensuremath{\omega}) goes through various regimes, to end up with two peaks of half-width \ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\Delta} at the single-particle excitation energies ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{f}$ and ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{f}$+U. Thus the only effect of hybridization (${V}_{\mathrm{k}f}$) at high T and U\ensuremath{\gg}\ensuremath{\Delta} is the lifetime broadening of two sharp resonances obtained for ${V}_{\mathrm{k}f}$\ensuremath{\equiv}0, all other many-body effects having been washed out. Comparison with finite-T HF results shows that the HF approximation is reasonable (i.e., correlation is weak) for U\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\Delta} ${\mathrm{sin}}^{2}$(1/2\ensuremath{\pi}${\mathrm{n}}_{\mathrm{f}}^{0}$) at low T, but only for U\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\Delta} at high T.

TL;DR: A comprehensive set of data is presented which clearly demonstrates a strong correlation between oxygen depletion near the bottom and the disappearance of meroplanktonic hydromedusan species from the fauna of the northern Adriatic Sea and believes that this species is an indicator species of oxygen deficiencies in marine ecosystems.
Abstract: In many coastal and estuarine waters1,2, sensitive bottom-dwelling animals are threatened by depletion of the oxygen concentration in the near-bottom layer3–5, as a result of eutrophic conditions inshore. Persistent or occasional periods of low oxygen can reduce the number of benthic species, as has been reported for Chesapeake Bay6. Although it has been hypothesized6,7 that low oxygen concentration in the near-bottom layer extirpates those plankton species that have a bottom phase in their life cycles (meroplankton), there has been no direct evidence for this. We present here a comprehensive set of data which clearly demonstrates a strong correlation between oxygen depletion near the bottom and the disappearance of meroplanktonic hydromedusan species from the fauna of the northern Adriatic Sea. We believe that we have identified indicator species of oxygen deficiencies in marine ecosystems.

Abstract: A simple electron-phonon coupling model is constructed for the layered-metal oxides. The predictions of the model are the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic instability and separately from it, the bond dimerization within the layers. High Tc in those materials is associated with the soft shear phonon branch in their tetragonal state.

Abstract: An improvement of the Jacobi singular value decomposition algorithm is proposed The matrix is first reduced to a triangular form It is shown that the row-cyclic strategy preserves the triangularity Further improvements lie in the convergence properties It is shown that the method converges globally and a proof of the quadratic convergence is indicated as well The numerical experiments confirm these theoretical predictions Our method is about 2-3 times slower than the standard QR method but it almost reaches the latter if the matrix is diagonally dominant or of low rank

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of the magnetic field on the intergrain Josephson currents on the surface of the sample was detected by studying the variation of the microwave absorption of superconductive GdBa2Cu3O9-y samples.
Abstract: By studying the variation of the microwave absorption of superconductive GdBa2Cu3O9-y samples with an ESR apparatus, we have detected the influence of the magnetic field on the intergrain Josephson currents on the surface of the sample. The onset of superconductivity is easily detectable as a sharp signal rise. The observed evolution of the signal intensity below Tc is a useful indicator of the improvement of the superconducting properties of the sample. Quenched nonsuperconductive samples showed no signal at all.

TL;DR: Two primary radical species can be discriminated and assigned to the cation and anion of the guanine base, G(+) andG(−), which are unstable and transforms upon annealing to temperatures above 77 K into a more stable species by deprotonation at positionN1.
Abstract: In single crystals of the DNA nucleotide 2′deoxyguanosine-5′phosphate (5′dGMP) X- orγ-irradiated at 4.2 K or 15 K, two primary radical species can be discriminated and assigned to the cation and anion of the guanine base,G(+) andG(−). Both species are unstable.G(−) partially transforms into a secondary radical at 4.2 K, the latter being the precursor to the dominant 300 K species formed by netH-addition to carbonC8. The secondary radical, together with another intermediate appearing at 77 K and perhaps connected with the anion decay could not be structurally identified. The guanine cationG(+) transforms upon annealing to temperatures above 77 K into a more stable species by deprotonation at positionN1.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that each translocation arose only once and that different translocations have come together in different populations to generate a unique karyotype characterizing this population of wild mice.
Abstract: A total of 88 wild mice from the Dalmatian coast of Yugoslavia (35 animals), and Peloponnesus (30 animals) and Thebes (23 animals) on mainland Greece were karyotyped. In all but five animals Robertsonian translocations were found. Mice from the Dalmatian region were homozygous for translocations Rb(5.15), Rb(6.12), Rb(8.17), Rb(9.13), and Rb(10.14); they were homo-or heterozygous for the translocation Rb(1.11). Some of them lacked the Rb(1.11) translocation altogether so that the diploid numbers in the Yugoslavian mice were 2n=28, 29, 30, or 40. The mice from the vicinity of Olympia in northwestern Peloponnesus were homozygous for eight Robertsonian translocations: Rb(1.3), Rb(2.5), Rb(4.6), Rb(8.12), Rb(9.16), Rb(10.14), Rb(11.17), and Rb(13.15). Their diploid chromosome number was therefore 2n=24. Mice from the vicinity of Patras in northwest Peloponnesus carried all except the first three of these eight translocations; their chromosome number was 2n=30. Finally, the mice from Thebes were homozygous for translocations Rb(2.15), Rb(4.14), Rb(5.12), and Rb(10.13). They were homo- or heterozygous for Rb(6.9), Rb(8.17), and Rb(1.11); some mice lacked the Tb(1.11) translocation altogether. The translocations Rb(6.9)40Tu and Rb(10.13)42Tu represent new arm combinations not found previously in any wild mouse population. the remaining translocations have previously been found in different Mediterranean countries, in Scotland and in southern Germany. The findings suggest that each translocation arose only once and that different translocations have come together in different populations to generate a unique karyotype characterizing this population.

TL;DR: Parameters of Malécot's isolation-by-distance model are estimated for biological and linguistic distances and migrational kinship on the island of Korcula and the Peljesac peninsula in Middle Dalmatia, Croatia, Yugoslavia and resulting parameters and the fit of the model are compared.
Abstract: Parameters of Malecot's isolation-by-distance model are estimated for biological (anthropometric head and body dimensions, morphometric dimensions of metacarpal bones, quantitative and qualitative dermatoglyphic traits, and physiological/cardiorespiratory/variables) and linguistic distances and migrational kinship on the island of Korcula and the Peljesac peninsula in Middle Dalmatia, Croatia, Yugoslavia. Resulting parameters and the fit of the model are compared, for both regions, as well as with results of similar analysis in other parts of the world. The fit of the model is highly significant for migrational kinship and linguistic distances and less so for biological traits. Differences between these two populations, which live under basically similar ecological conditions, are explained by variation in biological and sociocultural history.

TL;DR: Taking of the transplant, while retaining the lower margin of the mandibular symphysis, preserves the contour of the chin.
Abstract: Summary Autotransplant bone is superior to other bone, cartilage, or alloplastic materials for the reconstruction of orbital floor defects. The bone used for filling orbital floor defects is taken from the symphysis of the lower jaw. The piece of bone, up to 3.5 × 1.5 cm in diameter is strong enough to support the orbital contents, while at the same time it is easily modelled and positioned. This method is indicated for reconstruction of the orbital floor, with or without rim defects. Taking of the transplant, while retaining the lower margin of the mandibular symphysis, preserves the contour of the chin.

TL;DR: The cross-linked glycoenzymes are much more resistant to denaturation by high temperature and by changes in pH, demonstrating the usefulness of this method in preparation of the stabilized glycoprotein derivatives.
Abstract: Each of the three high-mannose type glycoproteins studied, acid phosphatase, invertase, and glucose oxidase, could be specifically cross-linked through its carbohydrate chains. The procedure involves periodate oxidation of carbohydrate residues followed by reaction of the generated aldehyde groups with adipic acid dihydrazide as a cross-linker. The amount and size as well as solubility of the formed polymers could be efficiently controlled by varying the reaction conditions, i.e., the oxidation degree and the concentrations of glycoproteins, cross-linker, and hydrogen ions during the cross-linking reaction. It was found that the quantity and size of polymers increased with oxidation degree and protein concentration and by lowering the pH. When the protein concentration was above and pH below certain values, depending on the glycoenzyme, insoluble polymers formed. The soluble cross-linked polymers retained a high level of original activity, and the minor decrease in specific activity noticed was shown to occur during the periodate oxidation step. The cross-linked glycoenzymes are much more resistant to denaturation by high temperature and by changes in pH, demonstrating the usefulness of this method in preparation of the stabilized glycoprotein derivatives.

TL;DR: The results suggested an upper acceptable limit of TMA in trout for human consumption of around 10 mg%.
Abstract: Rainbow trout were kept in cages in brackish water for 40 and 90 days, respectively, to establish how brackish water affected sensory characteristics and the concentration of TMA. The trout from both groups were transferred to the sea at the same time. During the first 3 days of the experiment no differences in sensory characteristics and TMA were noted in the fish, but after that period TMA increased and the sensory characteristics of the fish from all three groups changed so much that they were no longer suitable for human consumption. The results suggested an upper acceptable limit of TMA in trout for human consumption of around 10 mg%.

TL;DR: In this paper, a surfactant-free latex suspension was passed through a column packed with copper grains, where the car-ylated latex particles are negatively charged throughout the entire pH region while the surface charge of copper altered sign at the iep.
Abstract: A method for the determination of isoelectric point for metallic surfaces was developed. The method is based on the effect of surface potentials on the kinetics of colloid particles' attachment to surfaces. A surfactant-free latex suspension was passed through a column packed with copper grains. The car☐ylated latex particles are negatively charged throughout the entire pH region while the surface charge of copper altered sign at the iep. At pH above the iep, no attachment occurred while below the iep deposition took place and significantly reduced the concentration of the outgoing suspension. Theoretical considerations illustrate that the extrapolation of the transition region to C out / C in = 0 corresponds to the iep. For copper the iep was found at pH 9.8 and its value increased in the presence of Cu 2+ ions.

TL;DR: The results of the controlled poll have shown that this method of insulin administration is less painful and simpler for patients, and the great majority of the patients would like to possess a jet injector.
Abstract: UNLABELLED The levels of blood glucose and free insulin were compared in 20 diabetic subjects (type 2) receiving one dose of a combination of fast-acting and intermediary-acting insulins in the morning by means of a needle syringe or a jet injector (SICIM, Italy), using minimum possible injecting power. A shift to the left in the free insulin profile, consequential to different pharmacokinetic characteristics of insulin when administered by means of a jet injector, was observed, although no significant differences were seen for free insulin levels. Statistically significantly higher blood glucose values (P less than 0.05) were recorded 6 and 9 h after insulin administration by means of a jet injector, as well as statistically significant higher MBG values (P less than 0.05), thus indicating a faster and shorter effect achieved in comparison to that produced by the syringe injected insulin. CONCLUSIONS 1. When switching the method of insulin administration in patients from needle syringe to jet injections the power of the jet injector should be increased (it can be set in three different levels). If that is not possible, because of patient skin characteristics then the dose of intermediary acting insulin should be slightly increased. 2. No local or general side-effects were registered using minimum injecting power of jet injector. 3. The results of the controlled poll have shown that this method of insulin administration is less painful and simpler for patients. The great majority of the patients would like to possess a jet injector.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dependence of the normal-state resistivity, resistive superconducting transition (T c, ΔT c), and the upper critical field slope (dH c2/dT|T=Tc) on density has been investigated for several YBa2Cu3O9-x(x⋍2.1) samples.
Abstract: The dependence of the normal-state resistivity, resistive superconducting transition (T c, ΔT c), and of the upper critical-field slope (dH c2/dT|T=Tc) on density has been investigated for several YBa2Cu3O9-x(x⋍2.1) samples. The resistivity decreases rapidly with increasing density, whereas T c and ΔT c are rather insensitive to a change in density. dH c2/dT|Tc depends sensitively on the preparation conditions. The implications of these results both for the evaluation of the parameters relevant to the understanding of the nature of superconductivity and for the technological applications of granular superconductors are briefly discussed.

Abstract: A laboratory testing programme of granular materials stabilized with cement has been implemented in order to determine the influence of changes in mix composition on their mechanical characteristics. The elements of the composition of stabilized mixes such as gradation, cement content, cement type, density and curing time were varied. The results obtained were analysed statistically and three types of correlation were determined. It is concluded that the relationship between the dynamic modulus of elasticity and the pulse velocity is almost unaffected by individual composition parameters, while the relationship between compressive and tensile strength, and especially that of compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity, is dependent on these parameters.

TL;DR: In this process, at a substrate concentration of 50 mM d,l-phenyllactate the authors reached a spacetime-yield of 28 g l-Phe/(l*d).
Abstract: The production of l-phenylalanine from the racemate d,l-phenyllactate in an enzyme membrane reactor has been examined. In a first step the racemate is dehydrogenated to the prochiral intermediate phenylpyruvate by the enzymes d-and l-hydroxyisocaproate dehydrogenase. In a second step phenylpyruvate is reductively aminated to l-phenylalanine by l-phenylalanine dehydrogenase. Both steps are dependent on coenzyme, the first one requires NAD, the second one NADH in stoichiometric amounts; in this way the coenzyme is regenerated and only required catalytically. The coenzyme is covalently bound to polyethylene glyco-20 000 and can thus be retained in the reactor analogously to the three enzymes. In order to optimize the continuous production of l-phenylalanine from d,l-phenyllactate, models of the reaction kinetics and of the reactor system have been set up. By means of the reactor model, we can calculate the optimum ratio of the three enzymes, the optimum coenzyme concentration and the optimum phenylpyruvate concentration in the feed.
