Abstract: Strong evidence implicates prefrontal cortex (PFC) as a major source of functional impairment in severe mental illness such as schizophrenia. Numerous schizophrenia studies report deficits in PFC structure, activation, and functional connectivity in patients with chronic illness, suggesting that deficient PFC functional connectivity occurs in this disorder. However, the PFC functional connectivity patterns during illness onset and its longitudinal progression remain uncharacterized. Emerging evidence suggests that early-course schizophrenia involves increased PFC glutamate, which might elevate PFC functional connectivity. To test this hypothesis, we examined 129 non-medicated, human subjects diagnosed with early-course schizophrenia and 106 matched healthy human subjects using both whole-brain data-driven and hypothesis-driven PFC analyses of resting-state fMRI. We identified increased PFC connectivity in early-course patients, predictive of symptoms and diagnostic classification, but less evidence for “hypoconnectivity.” At the whole-brain level, we observed “hyperconnectivity” around areas centered on the default system, with modest overlap with PFC-specific effects. The PFC hyperconnectivity normalized for a subset of the sample followed longitudinally (n = 25), which also predicted immediate symptom improvement. Biologically informed computational modeling implicates altered overall connection strength in schizophrenia. The initial hyperconnectivity, which may decrease longitudinally, could have prognostic and therapeutic implications.

Abstract: The aim of the study was to assess fitness profile of elite Croatian female taekwondo athletes and to determine which physical, physiological and motor characteristics differentiate mostly the successful from the less successful fighters. Thirteen national taekwondo champions were divided into two groups according to their senior international competitive achievements. Physiological characteristics, including maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), were assessed during a continuous progressive treadmill test. The measured motor abilities included explosive and elastic leg strength, maximal strength, muscular endurance, anaerobic alactic power, agility and flexibility. Differences between the successful and less successful athletes were determined using independent t-test. Even though the differences were not statistically significant, the successful athletes had somewhat less fat (2.3%) and were taller by 5.8 cm. The successful athletes achieved significantly higher maximum running speed (15.8 +/- 0.5 versus 14.9 +/- 0. 7 km h(-1); p < 0.05), their ventilatory anaerobic threshold was significantly higher (41.4 +/- 4.1 versus 37.6 +/- 2.0 ml kg(-1) min(-1); p < 0.05) at a significantly lower heart rate (166.8 +/- 6.8 versus 171.0 +/- 8.2 beats min(-1); p < 0.05) than in the less successful athletes. Significant differences were also found in three tests of explosive power (p < 0.05), anaerobic alactic power (p < 0.01), and lateral agility (p < 0.05). The performance of taekwondo female athletes primarily depends on the anaerobic alactic power, explosive power expressed in the stretch-shortening cycle movements, agility and aerobic power.

Abstract: An electronic throttle is a dc-motor-driven valve that regulates air inflow into the combustion system of the engine. The throttle control system should ensure fast and accurate reference tracking of the valve plate angle while preventing excessive wear of the throttle components by constraining physical variables to their normal-operation domains. These high-quality control demands are hard to accomplish since the plant is burdened with strong nonlinear effects of friction and limp-home nonlinearity. In this paper, the controller synthesis is performed in discrete time by solving a constrained time-optimal control problem for the piecewise affine (PWA) model of the throttle. To that end, a procedure is proposed to model friction in a discrete-time PWA form that is suitable both for simulation and controller design purposes. The control action computation can, in general, be restated as a mixed-integer program. However, due to the small sampling time, solving such a program online (in a receding horizon fashion) would be very prohibitive. This issue is resolved by applying recent theoretical results that enable offline precomputation of the state-feedback optimal control law in the form of a lookup table. The technique employs invariant set computation and reachability analysis. The experimental results on a real electronic throttle are reported and compared with a tuned PID controller that comprises a feedforward compensation of the process nonlinearities. The designed time-optimal controller achieves considerably faster transient, while preserving other important performance measures, like the absence of overshoot and static accuracy within the measurement resolution

Abstract: The sustainability of agroecosystems is closely related to successful soil conservation. Sustainable land use practices are crucial to reduce the impacts of agriculture on land degradation and maintain long-term soil productivity. In this context, is important to avoid practices that deteriorate the soil (e.g. soil erosion), and find the most suitable to maintain soil and crops productivity. The objective of this work is to compare the impact of different tillage systems on soil compaction, erosion and crop production on clay loam Stagnosols in Croatia. Three tillage treatments were studied: conventional tillage (CT), no-tillage (NT) and deep tillage (DT). Soil water content, bulk density and penetration resistance were determined in the 0–10, 10–20, 20–30 and 30–40 cm soil depths. Soil erosion was measured during rainfall events.
