Abstract: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Impact of Event Scale (IES scale) in children a study was conducted on 1787 children exposed to the warfare in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The study group comprised 877 girls and 910 boys ranging in age from 6 to 15 years attending 28 arbitrary selected schools in Zagreb. High levels of posttraumatic reactions were found in the group of children. The pattern of endorsement and the factor structure of the IES scale were similar to that found in other samples. This supports the use of the IES in the assessment of posttraumatic stress reactions in children. Two factors emerged from a Principal Component Analysis, labeled intrusion (9 items), and avoidance (4 items). As in other studies, this study documented problems with several items (items 2, 12 and 15), items that should be considered omitted from the IES. Girls reported significantly more distress on 13 out of the 15 items. Both the overall IES score as well as the intrusion and avoidance score were significantly higher in girls than boys. The factor structure for boys and girls were very similar, and the reliability of the scale was adequate across different age groups and for subgroups of displaced and refugee children.

Abstract: We tested six hypotheses to explain expected geographical differences in body masses of 1,771 brown bears (Ursus arctos) from northern and southern Europe (Sweden and Norway compared with Slovenia and Croatia): Bergmann's rule, the fasting endurance hypothesis, and the dietary meat hypothesis, which predicted larger bears in the north; and hypotheses stressing the role of high primary productivity, high population density, low seasonality, and length of the growing season, which predicted larger bears in the south. Although brown bear populations in North America vary greatly in body mass, we found no significant difference in body mass between the two European popu- lations using a new analytical approach incorporating modeled age-standardized body masses in linear models, when correcting for sex and season. The greater variation in North America may be due primarily to the presence of large bears that feed on salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), which does not occur in Europe. Asymptotic body masses were 115 ± 9 (SE) kg in spring and 141 ± 9 kg in autumn for southern females, 248 ± 25 and 243 ± 24 kg for southern males, 96 ± 2 and 158 ± 4 kg for northern females, and 201 ± 4 and 273 ± 6 kg for northern males, respectively. Northern bears gained more body mass before hibernation and lost more during hibernation than southern bears, probably be- cause hibernation was twice as long in the north. Northern bears gained and southern bears lost mass during the spring, perhaps due to the greater availability and use of protein-rich food in spring in the north. As reproductive success in bears is correlated with adult female body mass in interpopulation comparisons, brown bears may have relatively similar reproductive rates throughout Europe, although minimum age at primiparity and litter interval are lower in the south.

Abstract: We describe the construction of a highly reliable sample of ~7000 optically faint periodic variable stars with light curves obtained by the asteroid survey LINEAR across 10,000 deg^2 of the northern sky. The majority of these variables have not been cataloged yet. The sample flux limit is several magnitudes fainter than most other wide-angle surveys; the photometric errors range from ~0.03 mag at r = 15 to ~0.20 mag at r = 18. Light curves include on average 250 data points, collected over about a decade. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) based photometric recalibration of the LINEAR data for about 25 million objects, we selected ~200,000 most probable candidate variables with r < 17 and visually confirmed and classified ~7000 periodic variables using phased light curves. The reliability and uniformity of visual classification across eight human classifiers was calibrated and tested using a catalog of variable stars from the SDSS Stripe 82 region and verified using an unsupervised machine learning approach. The resulting sample of periodic LINEAR variables is dominated by 3900 RR Lyrae stars and 2700 eclipsing binary stars of all subtypes and includes small fractions of relatively rare populations such as asymptotic giant branch stars and SX Phoenicis stars. We discuss the distribution of these mostly uncataloged variables in various diagrams constructed with optical-to-infrared SDSS, Two Micron All Sky Survey, and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer photometry, and with LINEAR light-curve features. We find that the combination of light-curve features and colors enables classification schemes much more powerful than when colors or light curves are each used separately. An interesting side result is a robust and precise quantitative description of a strong correlation between the light-curve period and color/spectral type for close and contact eclipsing binary stars (β Lyrae and W UMa): as the color-based spectral type varies from K4 to F5, the median period increases from 5.9 hr to 8.8 hr. These large samples of robustly classified variable stars will enable detailed statistical studies of the Galactic structure and physics of binary and other stars and we make these samples publicly available.

Abstract: Bone drilling causes an increase in bone temperature, and a temperature above 47°C is critical because it causes thermal bone necrosis. Thermal osteonecrosis is common with the drill diameter of ≥4.5 mm without cooling. The aim of this study was to determine the increase of bone temperature during drilling using newly contructed two-step and internally cooled drills. An experiment was set up according to a central composite design. An internally cooled drill (3.4 mm and 4.5 mm) and a two-step drill (2.5/3.4 and 3.4/4.5 mm) were used in combination with feed rates of (0.02, 0.04, 0.10, 0.16 and 0.18 mm/rev) and cutting speeds (1.18, 10.68, 33.61, 56.55 and 66.05 m/min) with and without cooling with water of 24°C. Bone temperatures were measured with thermocouples. Drilling was performed on pig diaphyses with a three-axis mini milling machine. Bone temperatures in all combinations of parameters with internal cooling were below the critical 47°C (p = 0.05). The highest temperatures were detected using a 4.5-mm drill (40.5°C). A statistically significant effect other than cooling was found with the drill diameter and feed. A drill diameter of 3.4 mm with internal cooling developed a maximum temperature of 38.5°C and without cooling 46.3°C. For the same conditions a drill with diameter of 4.5 mm reached temperatures of 40.5°C and 55.7°C, respectively. The effect of feed rate is inversely proportional to the increase in bone temperature. With the feed rate 0.16 mm/rev, temperature was below critical even using the 4.5-mm drill (46.4°C, p = 0.05). Using the 3.4-mm drill all temperatures were below critical (46.2°C, p = 0.05). The two-step drill compared to a standard drill with the same diameter did not show statistical differences in maximum bone temperatures for all combinations of parameters (p = 0.05). A two-step drill does not have any advantages over a standard twist drill of the same diameter. An internally cooled drill causes a significantly smaller increase of bone temperature during drilling with water of 24°C. An internally cooled drill is currently the 'ideal' drill for traumatology/orthopaedics because it produces the smallest increase in bone drilling temperature. If internal cooling is used the regulation of other drilling parameters is of no importance.
