Abstract: The dual impact of expanding capitalism and colonial administration upon eastern Zambian society after 1895 resulted in a major ecological catastrophe in the area during the first half of this century. By the end of the colonial era, the people dwelling in some of the most fertile and hospitable land in the country were impoverished and disease-ridden. The land had been rendered barren and desolate, and the finely balanced relationship between man and his environment that had existed in the area prior to the mid-nineteenth century was undermined, involving it in a process of underdevelopment still unreversed today. Although certain scholars have described the ecological degradation of eastern Zambia, for the most part in terms of land policy,2 they have failed to appreciate the complexity of interactions involved in the unfolding of this process. This article's aim is to explore this complexity.

Abstract: Severe acute malnutrition has continued to be growing problem in Sub Saharan Africa. We investigated the factors associated with morbidity and mortality of under-five children admitted and managed in hospital for severe acute malnutrition. It was a retrospective quantitative review of hospital based records using patient files, ward death and discharge registers. It was conducted focussing on demographic, clinical and mortality data which was extracted on all children aged 0–60 months admitted to the University Teaching Hospital in Zambia from 2009 to 2013. Cox proportional Hazards regression was used to identify predictors of mortality and Kaplan Meier curves where used to predict the length of stay on the ward. Overall (n = 9540) under-five children with severe acute malnutrition were admitted during the period under review, comprising 5148 (54%) males and 4386 (46%) females. Kwashiorkor was the most common type of severe acute malnutrition (62%) while diarrhoea and pneumonia were the most common co-morbidities. Overall mortality was at 46% with children with marasmus having the lowest survival rates on Kaplan Meier graphs. HIV infected children were 80% more likely to die compared to HIV uninfected children (HR = 1.8; 95%CI: 1.6-1.2). However, over time (2009–2013), admissions and mortality rates declined significantly (mortality 51% vs. 35%, P < 0.0001). We find evidence of declining mortality among the core morbid nutritional conditions, namely kwashiorkor, marasmus and marasmic-kwashiorkor among under-five children admitted at this hospital. The reasons for this are unclear or could be beyond the scope of this study. This decline in numbers could be either be associated with declining admissions or due to the interventions that have been implemented at community level to combat malnutrition such as provision of “Ready to Use therapeutic food” and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV at health centre level. Strategies that enhance and expand growth monitoring interventions at community level to detect malnutrition early to reduce incidence of severe cases and mortality need to be strengthened.

Abstract: Osteosarcoma is a rare tumor diagnosed at any age; however younger age is a common risk factor. In addition, multiple factors are believed to contribute to higher rates of osteosarcoma, particularly race and gender. Although diagnosed worldwide, osteosarcoma is found to be more prevalent in Africa with high numbers of cases reported in Nigeria, Uganda, and Sudan. Additionally, higher rates are detected in African Americans, suggesting a genetic predisposition linked to race. This review focuses on identifying high risk factors of osteosarcoma with an emphasis on sarcoma epidemiology and risk factors in African countries.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and some factors influencing occurrence of fasciolosis in cattle, carried out at selected major abattoirs in Zambia. Of 841 cattle livers inspected and 677 faecal samples analysed, prevalence rates of 53.9% and 48.9%, respectively, were found. Cumulative prevalence of 60.9% (n = 677) was recorded. According to age, no significant difference of infection was found. Female cattle on liver inspection (59.3%) and coprological examination (65.2%) had significantly higher (P < 0.001) rates than males (44.5% and 36.3% respectively). Origin of cattle had a significant influence (P < 0.001) on the prevalence rate. According to fluke egg count classification, 68.5% of cattle had light infection, 20.9% moderate, 4.4% heavy and 6.2% severe. These results indicate that Fasciola gigantica infection is an important condition that leads to high liver condemnations and/or trimmings in cattle tendered for slaughter.
