TL;DR: In this article, the mechanisms of the oxygen evolution reaction and the electrical properties of the oxides are simultaneously discussed, and it is suggested that some assumptions used in the deduction of the mechanism from the reaction parameters may not always correct, especially in the potential distribution in the interface between the electrode and the electrolyte.

TL;DR: Values of β enabled to discriminate the families into (1) Umbelliferae, Cucurbitaceae and Cruciferae in which Cd accumulation was promoted at higher soil Cd levels, and (2) the other families which were of the excluder type.
Abstract: Thirty four plant species belonging to 9 families were grown on a sand soil with various levels of added Cd. The Cd content of aerial parts of the plants (tc) was correlated to the soil Cd level (sc) in a double-logarithmic relationship: log (tc)=α+β log (sc). The regression coefficients α and β statistically differed among plant families. Plant families were classified into 3 groups based on the α values; (1) low accumulation, Leguminosae; (2) moderate accumulation, Gramineae, Liliaceae, Cucurbitaceae and Umbelliferae; and (3) high accumulation, Chenopodiaceae, Cruciferae, Solanaceae and Compositae. Values of β also enabled to discriminate the families into (1) Umbelliferae, Cucurbitaceae and Cruciferae in which Cd accumulation was promoted at higher soil Cd levels, and. (2) the other families which were of the excluder type.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of ferrous ion on the formation of isothiocyanate changed greatly with changes of pH of the reaction medium, and the results were also confirmed by gas chromatographic analysis of the volatile cleavage products of the glucosinolates prepared from the seed meal of hakuran (an artificial variety of Brassica napus).
Abstract: During the enzymatic degradation of sinigrin, the release of glucose and the formation of allyl isothiocyanate via subsequent cleavage of the aglucon were studied in the presence or absence of ferrous ion over a pH range of 3.5 ~ 7.5. The liberation of glucose increased linearly with the time of enzymatic cleavage of sinigrin for the first 20 min at the pHs used, and no inhibition of glucose liberation was caused by ferrous ion at the concentration tried. On the other hand, the effects of ferrous ion on the formation of isothiocyanate changed greatly with changes of pH of the reaction medium. At pH 4.5 and 5.5, formation of isothiocyanate was strongly inhibited by ferrous ion, while such an effect of ferrous ion was notably depressed at pH 6.5 and disappeared at pH 7.5. These results were also confirmed by gas chromatographic analysis of the volatile cleavage products of the glucosinolates prepared from the seed meal of hakuran (an artificial variety of Brassica napus). From these results, it was suggested...

TL;DR: In this paper, a new type of electrodes of IRO/sub 2/TiO/sub 4/ aqueous solution on the TiO/Sub 2/ films were tested as the anode for the oxygen evolution reaction in acidic solution.
Abstract: New type of electrodes of IrO/sub 2//TiO/sub 2//Ti, where the TiO/sub 2/ films are prepared by the anodic oxidation accompanied by sparking and are porous, were tested as the anode for the oxygen evolution reaction in acidic solution. The IrO/sub 2//TiO/sub 2//Ti electrodes were prepared by thermal decomposition of IrCl/sub 4/ aqueous solution on the TiO/sub 2/ films. The resistivities of the electrodes themselves became zero by the thermal decomposition process to form IrO/sub 2/, if the TiO/sub 2/ films were prepared by the anodic oxidation accompanied by sufficient sparking. It was found that the catalytic activities of the IrO/sub 2//TiO/sub 2//Ti electrodes are higher than that of the IrO/sub 2//Ti electrode. The electrodes prepared at a calcination temperature lower than about 500/sup 0/C dissolved in the long-term test, although their surface areas were very large. The IrO/sub 2//TiO/sub 2//Ti electrodes prepared at 550/sup 0/ are very superior in their catalytic activity and their stability in the long-term test for the oxygen evolution reaction. The surface difference between the IRO/sub 2//TiO/sub 2//Ti and the IrO/sub 2//Ti electrodes is also discussed.

TL;DR: When allophane was added to conventional complex media containing nutrient-derived inorganic phosphate, the production of nanaomycin and several other antibiotics, which are subject to phosphate regulation, was enhanced several fold with the simultaneous reduction of free phosphate.
Abstract: Nanaomycin production by Streptanyces rosa subsp. notoensis in complex media was inhibited by exogenously supplied inorganic phosphate. The inhibition was reversed by phosphate-trapping agents such as allophane and aluminum oxide. Under such condition nanaomycin production increased to the control level, and the phosphate content dropped down to the unsupplemented level. When allophane was added to conventional complex media containing nutrient-derived inorganic phosphate, the production of nanaomycin and several other antibiotics, which are subject to phosphate regulation, was enhanced several fold with the simultaneous reduction of free phosphate. The term "phosphate-depressed fermentation" is proposed for this technique.

TL;DR: Experiments with vowel samples spoken by 64 normal control subjects and 50 patients with glottic cancer have shown that the NNE is useful for the distinction between normal and pathological voice status.
Abstract: An adaptive comb filtering method, which was initially investigated by Frazier et al. [5] for the enhancement of degraded speech due to additive noise, is applied for estimating vocal noise generated at the glottis due to pathological changes of the vocal folds. In applying the method, special emphasis is placed on the accurate determination of pitch period durations. The amount of estimated vocal noise is quantified by a novel acoustic measure, normalized noise energy(NNE). Experiments with vowel samples spoken by 64 normal control subjects and 50 patients with glottic cancer have shown that the NNE is useful for the distinction between normal and pathological voice status.

TL;DR: In this paper, the X-ray absorption near edge structures (XANES) of alkali fluorides, Lid, NaF, KF and RbF were measured by a photoelectric yield method.
Abstract: F–K X-ray absorption near edge structures (XANES) of alkali fluorides, Lid, NaF, KF and RbF are measured by a photoelectric yield method. Na–K spectrum of NaF is also measured. The short-range order multiple scattering calculations for each K spectrum of LiF and NaF are performed. From comparison of the observed spectra with the calculated results, the effective cation charges are estimated with q =0.70±0.05 and 0.74±0.04 for LiF and NaF, respectively. These calculated F–K XANES spectra of alkali fluorides are not so sensitive to the charge distributions as cation K XANES. These results are in contrast with the case of alkaline-earth fluorides.

TL;DR: In this article, the coupling characteristic of rectangular dielectric waveguides which lay in different, parallel layers and one waveguide crossed over the other one was studied, and the step-like approximation and the variational method were used for calculating the coupling coefficient which varies with axial distance z.
Abstract: The coupling characteristic of rectangular dielectric waveguides which lay in different, parallel layers and one waveguide crossed over the other one are studied. Step-like approximation and the variational method are used for calculating the coupling coefficient which varies with axial distance z . Electromagnetic field expression for the dielectric waveguide mode of rectangular cross section is newly introduced and used. Calculated coupling characteristics are compared with experimental results carried on 50 GHz band. The principle of crossed waveguides leads us to the new design concept of "multilayered integrated circuit."

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of l-cysteine, reduced glutathione, dithiothreitol, cysteamine, thiobenzoate and thiophenol on the enzymatic degradation of sinigrin were investigated in combination with ferrous ion at different pHs (5.0 ~ 7.5).
Abstract: The effects of l-cysteine, reduced glutathione, dithiothreitol, cysteamine, thiobenzoate, thiomalate, and thiophenol on the enzymatic degradation of sinigrin were investigated in combination with ferrous ion at different pHs (5.0 ~ 7.5). Formation of allyl isothiocyanate was greatly inhibited by addition of both the thiol compounds and ferrous ion to the reaction medium at pH 5.0 or 6.5.Combined effects of the thiol compounds and ferrous ion on the formation of volatile products was also studied by gas chromatography using a mixture of allyl, 3-butenyl, and 4-pentenyl glucosinolates (1:4:1) as substrate. It was confirmed that the greater part of the volatile components produced in the presence of both the thiol compounds and ferrous ion was allyl, 3-butenyl, and 4-pentenyl cyanides and their corresponding cyanoepithioalkanes, even though the reaction medium was adjusted to pH 6.5.Similar results were obtained when silver sinigrate, an analogous model compound to the aglucon of sinigrin, was degraded by th...

TL;DR: In this paper, pressure-area (π-A) isotherms were used to study the molecular arrangements of irisquinone derivatives in monolayers of trans-irisquinone, dihydroirisquinones, 3-hydroxydihydroisquinone, and their corresponding unsaturated long-chain alcohols.
Abstract: Monolayers of irisquinone, trans-irisquinone, dihydroirisquinone, 3-hydroxyirisquinone, 3-hydroxydihydroirisquinone, and their corresponding unsaturated long-chain alcohols were studied using pressure-area (π-A) isotherms. All the materials studied form stable monolayers at the air/water interface and the characteristic molecular arrangements of the quinone derivatives in monolayers were presumed from the π-A isotherms. The contribution of the hydrophilic quinone headgroups and the hydrophobic alkyl chains to the characteristic molecular arrangements was discussed. Three of the five types of the materials exhibit the liquid-expanded/liquid-condensed transitions with compression at certain temperature regions. A thermodynamic treatment was applied to the transitions.

TL;DR: The two-dimensional Omega network is proposed as an interconnection network suitable for SIMD multiprocessor systems used in such fields as image processing and local parallel processing.
Abstract: Local parallel processing is effective for such fields as image processing where problems are essentially two-dimensional. Here, we propose the two-dimensional Omega network as an interconnection network suitable for SIMD multiprocessor systems used in such fields. The two-dimensional Omega network is an interconnection network devised to apply two-dimensional permutation to local data obtained in parallel from a two-dimensional array. The structure of inputs and outputs is an N × N two-dimensional array, and the number of levels is log2N. Here, we will define two-dimensional permutation as one-to-one mapping on the set whose elements are pairs of indices of a two-dimensional array. Among possible two-dimensional permutations, are two-dimensional shift and rotation. We will show the conditions for admissible permutations on the two-dimensional Omega network. As for hardware, the complexity is N 2/4 m log2N and the delay time is log2N; of the same order as conventional Omega networks. Furthermore, we will discuss the case where the two-dimensional Omega network has computing capability. We show that sum, maximum, and minimum of elements in two-dimensional arrays, and two-dimensional Fourier transformation can be obtained by one pass.

The technique can be extensively applied to the analysis of the two-dimensional fluid motion bounded by wavy boundaries.

TL;DR: The results suggest that the structure of saccharide chains of the glycoproteins of MFGM is very complicated, with major differences of specificity for lectin in a glycoprotein having the same mobility on electrophoresis.
Abstract: The receptor proteins for lectins of bovine milk fat globule membrane were probed by affinity chromatography on Concanavalin A (Con A)- and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-Sepharose in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Affinity chromatography on lectin column distinguished minor differences of specificity for lectin in a glycoprotein having the same mobility on electrophoresis. Of seven major glycoproteins (PAS-1 to 7), PAS-1 and -2 were bound to both Con A and WGA. Most of PAS-3 was retained on Con A. PAS-4 was retained on both WGA and Con A. A striking difference was observed between PAS-6 and -7 glycoproteins in the affinity to Con A, that is, PAS-6 was bourfd to Con A while PAS-7 not retained on Con A. However, most of PAS-6 and -7 was not retained on WGA, Part of PAS-5 was bound firmly while other parts failed to bind to both Con A and WGA. Our results suggest that the structure of saccharide chains of the glycoproteins of MFGM is very complicated.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system was developed to measure the condition of the contact caused by pressure between fabric and solid hard flat surfaces, which is composed of three parts: (1) applying pressure to d sample, (2) detecting the contact spots and (3) analyzing the detected data.
Abstract: In order to clarify the mechanism of the contact behavior of integrated filament or staple such as knitted fabric and woven fabric, we have developed a system to measure the condition of the contact caused by pressure between fabric and solid hard flat surface. This system is composed of three parts: (1) to apply pressure to d sample, (2) to detect the contact spots and (3) to analyze the detected data. By using this system we clarified the contact behavior of a polyester taffeta which consists of very crimped warp and of relatively straight weft. As a result we discovered that the mechanism of the contact behavior can be divided into following four regions: (1) the contact region in which the contact behavior is elastic, (2) the region in which the contact spot is deformed into slenderness within the warp filament, (3) the region in which the weft filament comes to contact and (4) the region in which the contact spots begin to harden by mutual interaction. As mentioned above, we discovered that this system is of great use in order to analyze the contact behavior of the material with the complicatedly structured surface.

TL;DR: In this article, the mean and anisotropic parameters e 0 and δe have been calculated as a function of pumping photon energy E ph, on a theoretical framework in which the spin-orbit and electron-lattice interactions with Γ 1 + -, Γ 3 + −, and Γ 5 + -modes are included.
Abstract: The spin-mixing parameter e is the probability that a spin is flipped into the opposite spin level in the optical processes in the presence of a magnetic field. In the Franck-Condon state, the mean and anisotropic parameters e 0 and δe have been calculated as a function of pumping photon energy E ph , on a theoretical framework in which the spin-orbit and electron-lattice interactions with Γ 1 + -, Γ 3 + -, and Γ 5 + -modes are included. The effect of the Γ 5 + -mode is predominant. By using e 0 and δe calculated, and introducing a mixing parameter e r1 in the non-radiative relaxation process, the experimentally-determined E ph -dependence of the net spin-mixing parameter e t and that of δe(1-2e r1 ) have been explained consistently. The e ph -dependence of fractional dichroic differential pumping rate has been calculated.
