Abstract: The photoelectrochemical properties of p-type CaFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/ and Sr/sub 7/Fe/sub 10/O/sub 22/ are studied in N/sub 2/-saturated 0.25 M K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ (pH 6.0). The differences between the Fermi level and the top of the valence band are determined to be 0.14 and 0.4 eV for Sr/sub 7/Fe/sub 10/O/sub 22/ and CaFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/, respectively, from the activation energies of the conductivities and the Seebeck coefficients. The cathodic photocurrents of the hydrogen evolution are observed in the potential region more positive than RHE by 0.7-0.8 V. The band gaps are 1.8 and 1.9 eV for Sr/sub 7/Fe/sub 10/O/sub 22/ and CaFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/, respectively. The flatband potential of Sr/sub 7/Fe/sub 10/O/sub 22/ is 0.1 V vs. SCE, but that of CaFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/ cannot be determined because of the Fermi level pinning. Pt deposited on the surfaces of both electrodes accelerates the electrochemical process of the hydrogen evolution reaction. CaFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/ is more stable than Sr/sub 7/Fe/sub 10/O/sub 22/ in the long-term test. The short circuit photocurrent of 0.3-0.4 ..mu..A/cm is observed in a Pt-deposited CaFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/(p type)/Zn/sub 1.2/Fe/sub 1.8/O/sub 4/ (n type) assembly under a xenon lamp illumination. The band structures of Sr/sub 7/Fe/sub 10/O/sub 22/more » and CaFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/ and their photoelectrochemical processes are also discussed.« less

Abstract: The oxygen K x-ray-absorption near-edge structure of alkaline-earth-metal and 3d-transition-metal oxides has been measured by means of the photoelectric yield method. The short-range order multiple scattering calculations for O K-edge spectra of CaO and TiO have also been performed. From comparison of the observed spectra with the calculated results, the effective cation charge is estimated with q=0.7 for CaO. In the case of 3d-transition-metal oxides, the calculated results are sensitive not only to the cation charge but also to the 3d electron number (d). For TiO, the effective cation charge and the number of 3d electrons are estimated with q=0.7--0.8 and d=1.8--2.0. .AE

Abstract: There are several radio sources with Faraday rotation measures larger than 500 rad m−2 (ref. 1). Because most of these sources are located near the galactic plane, the large rotation measures can be attributed to the galactic medium2. However, a few sources at high galactic latitude also show large rotation, implying intrinsic Faraday rotation within the source. Until now, no sources have been discovered to have a rotation measure > 1,000 rad m−2. Using a multichannel polarimeter at 10 GHz attached to the 45-m radio telescope at Nobeyama, we have observed about 100 extragalactic radio sources which were suspected to have large rotation from our polarization catalogue1. Four of these 100 sources were found to have an intrinsic rotation measure > 1,000 rad m−2. Here we report rotation measures which are two orders of magnitude larger than those observed so far for most extragalactic radio sources. Two of these four sources are classified as compact steep-spectrum sources.

Abstract: Ten plant species belonging to 5 families,i.e., Cruciferae, Cucurbitaceae, Gramineae, Leguminosae, and Solanaceae, were grown in a sand soil at two pH levels. The soil was subjected to an application of CdCl2 at rates of 0 to 700 mgCd·kg−1 soil. The relationship between Cd concentration in the shoots (tc) and soil (sc; NH4NO3 extractable) was expressed by the equation: log (tc)=α+βlog (sc). The coefficients α and β were estimated for each species at each level of soil pH. Plottings of the scores on α and β axes showed that the Cd accumulation characteristics in the plants appeared to depend on the families irrespective of soil pH. Based on theupper critical concentration of Cd in the tops (Ct), the Cruciferae and Leguminosae species were found to be the most and the least tolerant to Cd, respectively. The Ct values correlated exceedingly well with the values of α.

Abstract: The eyed embryos of raindow trout between diploid female and triploid male were obtained. The chromosome preparations of these embryos were made by the short-term culture method. There were two groups, namely 72 -79 of chromosomal numbers (18 individuals) and 100-108 (3 individuals). Judging from numbers and constitutions of the chromosomes, it is presume that the chromosomes of the triploid during spermatogenesis divide into two by near the common way.

Abstract: It is revealed in microwave-plasma interaction experiments that a large-amplitude electrostatic wave propagating obliquely to a magnetic field accelerates electrons strongly almost along the magnetic field lines via the process of ${\mathrm{V}}_{\mathrm{p}}$\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B acceleration. The experimental results are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical prediction of Sugihara et al.

Abstract: A high-performance instrument for preparing hetero-LB films fully automatically was developed. Two microcomputers linked together through an RS-232C communication line control surface pressures of monolayers digitally using four control parameters and complicated movement of a solid substrate. Double gates which permit the passage of solid substrates but which prohibit monolayers are used to deposit hetero-LB films. Model experiments show that the gates work well and the resultant hetero-LB films have very high regularity.

Abstract: Variations in tracheid length and morphological features of tracheid tips within a growth ring associated with the development of compression wood were observed in young trees of Larix leptolepis Gord and Abies firma Sieb et Zucc A reduction in tracheid length occurred with the development of compression wood within a growth ring Such a decrease in tracheid length was considered to have resulted from a conspicuous increase in the frequency of cell divisions Formation of compression wood was also accompanied by an increase in certain morphological features of the tracheid tips, indicating that the intrusive growth of the tracheid tips did not proceed smoothly in compression wood A negative correlation between the tracheid length and the occurrence of abnormal tracheid tips was established in a growth ring containing compression wood Whereas the variance of tracheid length increased with increasing tracheid length in normal wood, no such relationship could be observed in compression wood

Abstract: Sulfur ${L}_{2.3}$ and titanium ${L}_{2.3}$ and ${M}_{2.3}$ inner-shell-electron energy-loss spectra in 1T-${\mathrm{TiS}}_{2}$, 1T-${\mathrm{TiSe}}_{2}$, 2H-${\mathrm{TaS}}_{2}$, and 2H-${\mathrm{MoS}}_{2}$ have been measured at various primary energies in the reflection mode. A remarkable primary-energy dependence is found. As the primary energy decreases, the first peak that is assigned to the unoccupied ${t}_{2g}$ band for the 1T compounds band for 2H-${\mathrm{TaS}}_{2}$ increases in intensity relative to the second peak. The peak positions are almost unchanged. They are in agreement with those of band-structure calculations and x-ray absorption spectra. The primary-energy dependence has been discussed mainly in terms of the breakdown of dipole selection rules due to momentum transfer involved in the inelastic scattering process and anisotropy in electronic structures.

Abstract: A method for constructing crystal potentials which explicitly includes Madelung corrections due to charge transfer is presented for multicomponent crystals. In two-component crystals, this correction is systematically taken into account by the use of a reduced Madelung constant. On the basis of the crystal potentials obtained with this method including self-consistent field calculations, Cl K XANES of KCl, SrCl2, and CsCl crystals is studied by a multiple scattering theory within the muffin-tin approximation. It is found that the overall profiles of experimental spectra are well explained by the calculations. Eine Methode fur die Konstruktion von Kristallpotentialen, die explizit die Madelungkorrekturen infolge von Ladungstransfer einschliest, wird fur Multikomponentenkristalle vorgestellt. In Zwei-Komponentenkristallen wird diese Korrektur systematisch durch die Benutzung einer reduzierten Madelungkonstante berucksichtigt. Auf der Grundlage der mit dieser Methode erhaltenen Kristall-potentiale und unter Einbeziehung von selbstkonsistenten Feldberechnungen werden die Cl-K-XANES von KCl-, SrCl2- und CsCl-Kristallen mit einer Theorie der Mehrfachstreuung im Rahmen der Muffin-Tin-Naherung untersucht. Es wird gefunden, das die Gesamtprofile der experimentellen Spektren durch die Berechnungen gut erklart werden konnen.

Abstract: This paper describes a high speed string correction method using a hierarchical file. After reviewing a string correction method based on the Levenshtein distance, a hierarchical file construction method is introduced. A multistage string correction method using this file is proposed. The lower bound of computational complexity is estimated, and it is shown that a multistage method using a special type of a hierarchical file can reduce computational labor greatly. The larger the number of strings considered is, the more efficient the method becomes. The results of computer simulations on 5374 phoneme sequences using two and three stage correction methods are stated. The condition for a multistage string correction method to obtain higher correction rates than an ordinary dictionary method is included.

Abstract: α-Substituted benzylamino-s-triazines were synthesized, and their phytotoxic activity and phytotoxic symptom against paddy weeds and transplanted rice seedlings were evaluated. Some of these compounds exhibited potent phytotoxicity against the weeds, high selectivity between the rice and the weeds, and had different phytotoxic properties to atrazine and simetryn. Among these compounds, 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-α-methylbenzylamino-s-triazine (2), 2-chloro-4-ethylamino- 6-α-ethylbenzylamino-s-triazine (3), 2-chloro-4-diethylamino-6-α-methylbenzylamino-s-triazine (17), and 2-chloro-4-diisopropylamino-6-α-methylbenzylamino-s-triazine (19) were found to have high phytotoxic activity and selectivity. The phytotoxic symptom of these compounds was mainly growth inhibition to the weeds. Two of these, the diethylamino (17) and diisopropylamino (19) compounds, showed growth inhibition activity without burning the leaf of rice plants at high doses.

Abstract: The light and heavy plasma membranes (PM) isolated from lactating bovine mammary glands contained 38~43% lipid of which 41~44% was phospholipid and 47~52% neutral lipid. The contents of phospholipid and neutral lipid were somewhat higher in the light PM than in the heavy PM. Cholesterol was contained 55 ~60% of neutral lipid and the ratio of cholesterol to phospholipid was 0.64 to 0.69. Phospholipid was composed of sphingomyelin (Sph) 29~38%, phosphatidylcholine (PC) 27~35%, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) 16~20%, phosphatidylserine 10%, and phosphatidylinositol 6~7%. The content of Sph was higher in the heavy PM than in the light PM, while the values of PC and PE were opposite. The major fatty acids of lipid components were palmitic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid and those of Sph were palmitic acid, stearic acid, C23:0 and 24:0. Abstract: We report on the results of the measurements of energy spectra of atmospheric cosmic rays in the energy around 10 TeV measured with emulsion chambers at Mt. Kanbala (5500 m above sea-level, atmospheric depth 520 g/cm2). The power indices of the integral spectra take the values of 2.00±0.08 for gamma-rays and 1.90±0.10 for hadrons, in the energy range from 5 TeV to 20 TeV. Their intensities are compatible with those expected from the primary cosmic rays containing fewer protons than in the lower energy region. The energy spectrum of family events is also discussed with reference to the composition of primary cosmic rays. It is concluded that the portion of protons in the primary cosmic rays gradually decreases in the energy range from 1013 eV to 1015 eV.

Abstract: A visual microprogramming system has been developed to support all aspects of the microprogramming process for a microprogrammed computer. The user can specify microoperations on a displayed hardware configuration. A graphical microprogram list has also been designed to display several microinstructions on the screen. Optimization may also be done on the screen. A visual simulator graphically illustrates the execution of microoperations on the screen, while allowing the user to control the simulator by using several commands. Preliminary evaluation results are also presented.

Abstract: The metabolic fate of the carbon skeleton of l-[U-14C]phenylalanine, tyrosine and aspartic acid was investigated in growing rats fed with diets containing different percentages of protein calories (0, 5, 10, 15 and 30 PC%) at 4100 kcal of metabolizable energy per kg of diet.The incorporation of 14C into the body protein at 12 hr after the injection of 14C-phenylalanine was more than 80% of the dose in the dietary groups of 0 and 5 PC%, and it decreased gradually at higher PC% levels. The pattern of incorporation of 14C-tyrosine into the body protein was similar to that of phenylalanine. The carbon skeleton of 14C-aspartic acid was extensively oxidized to expired carbon dioxide, and 14C incorporation into the body protein was markedly less. The pattern of expired 14CO2 production from each 14C-amino acid was in inverse proportion to that of 14C incorporation into the body protein.These results suggest that although tyrosine is not an essential amino acid for the growth of rats, the carbon skeleton of tyros...

Abstract: The metabolic fates of the carbon skeletons of [U-14C]glycine and L-[U-14C]threonine were investigated in growing rats fed with diets containing different percentages of protein calories (0, 5, 10, 15, and 30PC%) at 4100 kcal of metabolizable energy per kg of diet. The incorporation of 14C into the body protein at 12 hr after the injection of 14C-glycine was about 58% of the dose in rats fed with the 10 or 15 PC% diet, and the values were reduced in both the lower and higher PC% groups. A considerable amount of 14C was recovered in the soluble fraction, and it was attributed to labeled glycine and serine in the free amino acid pools of the tissues. The incorporation of 14C into the body protein from 14C-threonine was extremely high in the dietary groups of 0 to 10 PC%, and it decreased in the 30PC% group. Conversely, the expired 14CO2 production was much less until the dietary protein level reached at 10PC%, and it increased with higher PC% in the diets. The change in the activity of hepatic threonine dehydratase in rats fed diets with increasing protein levels was similar to that of the expired 14CO2 production from 14C-threonine. These results indicate that, though the metabolic patterns for glycine and threonine differ from each other, their responses to dietary protein levels change at 10 to 15 PC%, where the growth rate reached its approximate maximum.

Abstract: We propose a design methodology based on data flow analysis for a functionally distributed, multiprocessor database machine. We define a cost model of database processing with the objective cost being response time of a set of query strategies. Heuristic optimization techniques are proposed using the operations of grouping, decomposition, and replication. We apply the new optimization techniques in several realistic multiprocessor environments. The resulting configurations of multiprocessors demonstrate significant performance improvements over more traditional designs.
